So do the dwarves closely monitor all casteless pregnancies and tattoo each child when they are born or is it something the casteless take apon themselves because while they may be casteless they still gotta respect dwarven laws and traditions?

Dwarf babies take after their same sex parent's caste, so a claim could be made when the baby is born which would probably be investigated and confirmed. I don't know when the tattoo process takes place, but it's illegal to walk around as a casteless without your branding (tattoo).

I assume there's something worse than Dust Town, so even casteless respect that law.

EDIT: made a mistake, they take place after their same sex parent. Not only after their father.

Male dwarf children take the father's caste (see Zerlinda from Origins), female Dwarf Children take the Mother's caste.

I'm pretty sure they don't monitor the pregnancies of casteless women, unless they're the known mistress of a noble or higher caste male.

They probably just look around Dust Town every now and then and if they see a kid running around without a tattoo and no evidence for a same sex parent of a higher caste, they take them an give them a casteless tattoo; just assuming they're casteless because they're in Dust Town.

The King could be their father, but if no one is willing to vouch for them or show evidence, it wont matter.

It's not a tattoo, it's a brand.  The dusters talk about how some of the shaperate take sadistic pleasure in making the brand especially painful for the infant.  If we can put it on our dwarf, I hope we can do something about it in the game, even though we aren't visiting Orzamar.

I don't think we'll have that option on our dwarves because we're playing surface dwarves.

When I read "Castless Tatts" in the thread's title, my mind went into the gutter. Not sure why.
