During the ventilation segment is it even necessary to take out the boomers on the balcony over the second corridor? Can they even shoot at you once you get down there? I think I remember still having one up there and still finishing the segment once I hit the second fan control.

For me it wasn't. I killed a couple, but not all and was still able to turn the fans back on.

It is not necessary to take out any of the Boom Squad. They actually cannot hit you when you go down in the hallway to turn on the fans, since you are directly below them and they cannot fire through the floor. So it is actually probably best if you head down below them as soon as possible. I always end up wasting too much pistol ammo on them if I try to take them all out.
