I really do hope at one point they could provide a 'lore-friendly' naming convention, but then again most of the names seem to be a mish-mash in Dragon Age. You have traditional Irish/Welsh/British names but then you have NPCs named Bella, etc...

I just use Tolkien-esque names for my elves because it just seems to fit the race in general. Qunari are a lot tougher since they are a unique race (and they aren't really 'named' so much as they are referred by their positions and functions), so what little is provided of Qunlat I find appropriate to use.

The Dragon Age Wiki seems to have a fair amount on Elvish and Qunlat words to choose from.

I'm gonna name my Dalish mage Vallasel, a fairly sloppy translation for "Our writing" and seeing as how vashoth take on a more personal word as their name, naming my guy Storm due to a backstory I just came up with

I saw Dances with Wolves for the first time a few months ago, and I decided I'm going to name my female Qunari rogue Runs-With-Scissors.

I admit I would like a list of dalish names to pick. I guess I can name my character after one of the dalish we've met before...

When I name my characters, I try to be lore-friendly, but I don't specifically use Dalish words or Qunlat words. For example, this is the naming scheme I use when naming my Dragon Age characters:

Human Characters - English/British names

Dwarven Characters - Nordic/Scandinavian names

Dalish Elven Characters - Welsh/Gaelic names

City Elven Characters - Mix of British/Gaelic names

Qunari Characters - Middle Eastern/Arabic names

Qunlat and Qunlat words remind me of Arabic in a way so that is how I plan to name my future Qunari. My first female Qunari is going to be named Ashraqat, Arabic for brightness.

Someday we'd have a big enough vocabulary to rival the LOTR-universe and Klingon.

  • Ashaqun: To seek balance.
  • Ashkost : To seek peace.
  • Asaaranda: Thunderstorm. Someone already translated that, alas.
  • Issqun'valo-kas: Mastery of the greatsword. Heads up: probably not the best name for a mage Inquisitor.
  • Issqun'shok: Mastery of war or struggle.
  • Kaaris: Navigator. For that extra touch whenever you look at the world map.

Congratulations! Your prize is free porn:

Spoiler

Also you can bet that my Inquisitor is going to use his Issqun'valo-kas name as part of his chat-up line every chance he gets.

This is basically my head cannon when determining names.

Qunari don't have names, they have titles.  In English it would be the same as calling people farmer, teacher, blacksmith, scholar, leader, priest, scout, ambassador and the like.  The inquisitor isn't culturally Qunari and likely wasn't raised around more then his/her core family who would be living among humans outside of the Qun.  Personally I feel the first in the family to breakaway make have been assigned to the navy as a cannon operator and when he used his title when asked for a name he gave that instead and that became his family name just like how smith's and shoemakers became family names in English.  I would imagine that someone who left the Qun wouldn't be set on passing down it's teachings so I would be surprised if the inquisitor even new more then a handful of Qunlat words.  In my head I see the Inquisitor family trying to integrate into human society and so named their child a more human name just like how many immigrates to America often changed their names and used more "American" names for their children in hopes that they wouldn't stand out as foreigners.
