I started this thread to continue a discussion in the twitter thread about, basically, the problems with the friend zone idea and how that relates to DA:I.

I said this:

I will say that I think the whole "all women want to sleep with you thing" is pretty terrible, and I can see what you're saying. I will, however, go on and say that we aren't really sure how the romances for each character will work. DA:O was really good about that; Alistair was fairly straightforward and would not sleep with you until a certain level of intimacy had been reached. Leliana required even more intimacy. Zevran required little intimacy, but a certain level of intimacy would lead him to refuse sex. I liked that each of the characters approached a relationship (be it romantic and sexual or purely sexual) in different ways.

So even if many of the ladies in Inquisition are "romanceable" they probably won't be in the same way. It doesn't exactly fix the problem you're pointing out (I have a friend that calls it "nice guy syndrome" - i.e. BUT I WAS NICE TO HER, WHY WON'T SHE JUMP IN BED WITH ME??? OMG I'VE BEEN FRIENDZONED!!!!!!!!!!!!!). However, it would probably keep the women from all being sex/relationship vending machines where you push a button and get a relationship.

With set sexuality, the notion of "every female will sleep with you" is ridiculous.

If you play as a male, Sera won't.

If you play as a female, Cassandra won't.

We might get a 5/3 split and we might get a 4/4 split.

If all the female companions are romancable, they're romancable whether it takes a long time or not.

Nice guy?  Your character is almost certainly going to be a heartless murderer carrying the variouis bloody weapons, armors and body parts taken from his fallen foes to hopefully sell at a later date.

Leliana isn't romanceable so there's proof that not all the ladies want the inquisitor (even ignoring the gender preferences)... Though tbh I'm not entirely sure what's being discussed.

jeez whats the point of this useless thread?

its a game sure in real life this wouldn't be possible (all females ready for the Inquisitor) and

even in the individual playthroughs you are only going to romance one female (if any) the others can be friends

hate you and even leave your party

That's surprising considering you're on the BSN.

The absolute maximum any given Inquisitor will be able to access is three out of five. It might only be two for some, if Vivienne is straight.

I don't think the fact that other player characters (whether in Origins or in Inquisition with the opposite gender) will be able to romance them is really a problem.

I don't think I have ever seen a topic more likely to get locked.

I take it you weren't here during the reign of ManGiraffeDog.

The criticism is that the prominent females - Sera, Cassandra, Vivienne, Josphine, Morrigan, and Leliana - are love interest or former love interests.

Those were the bad times. After DA 2 and ME 3, was probably the worst the BioWare forums ever were or will ever be.

Sera and Leliana are unavailable to bro inquisitor's sooooooo that V is padlocked here friend. And the former just needs a certain kind of special attention to unlock it.

As for not every gal being an option, well, good, this seems balanced. And I wouldn't mind if they did something similar to Samara's "romance" in ME2. Not everyone should be available to our hero, rejection is just a part of life.

Not all women will sleep with the PC.  Leliana is not an LI.  If your PC is a straight dude, Sera is not going to sleep with you.  If your PC is a lesbian woman, Cass is not going to sleep with you.  That is at least two women in every playthrough that will not sleep with you no matter what.

There isn't a affection system or a rival/friendship meter. Instead the player's relationship gradually grows over the course of events. Also each romance has a set sexuality so no not every female character is going to jump into the arms of the Inquisitor.

I certainly don't want to imagine how they could be worse. I look back and have no idea how or why I kept hanging out here through all of that.

(All right, it may have had something to do with my being so obsessed with DA2 I played it seven times, but still.)

That's not the criticism.

It's that the prominent female characters are all love interests. It figures into larger trends about the representation of women and who is and isn't important.

Branka - Oghren's wife.
Caridin - no one's husband
Anora - could be married
Arl Emon, Loghian - no sexual relations

Meredith and Ethena are the best exceptions to this. They're prominent female characters who are LIs... though they're both dead along with Wynne, Mama Hawke, and (possibly) Bethany.

There's also Aveline and Shale, but we don't know if they're going to be appearing.

If we knew a few more important female characters that were regular NPCs, this might be easier. Celene? She seems the most likely.

I think I get what you're saying, OP, but correct me if I got it wrong.  The majority of companion females in Dragon Age series have been romanceable. One might infer this as a sexist divide - all the ladies wanna sleep with the hero.

I believe BioWare to be a little more sensitive to the portrayal of women than that, and I think it has more to do with the overall gender split of companions.

Not counting any DLC: Origins- 3 females (Leliana, Morrigan, Wynne), 4 males (Alistair, Zevran, Sten, Oghren), (and Dog);
Awakenings- (no romanceable companions) 2 females (Sigrun, Velanna), 4 males (Nathaniel, Anders, Justice, Oghren);
DA2- 3 females (Isabela, Merrill, Aveline), 3 males (Fenris, Anders, Varric), and whichever Hawke sibling
Inquisition- 5 females (Leliana, Josephine, Sera, Cassandra, Vivienne), and 7 males (Cullen, Iron Bull, Dorian, Solas, Cole, Blackwall, Varric)

Whether or not you want to count Advisors in with companions is up to you, but there are still fewer females all around. It just kinda makes sense to me that the percentage of romanceable female companions is higher, since their overall numbers are a little bit lower.

But I do think with how the devs have explained the relationship progression and having sex/race gated romances, it will not seem like an "everyone loves the hero" type game.  Just my thoughts.  :)

Don't forget Sebastian as another male companion for DA2 who was romance-able. The problem I see here is that Bioware tend to have more male companions than female. But really, can we not jump to conclusions and trust Bioware; who seem to be all about fair representation and not see some hidden agenda behind everything they do?
We can find some sexist or racist intentions behind every design decision if we are cynical enough and look hard enough. So, please can we not do that?

So wait, it's a bad thing that the women had some sort of romantic interest? I'm confused.

Iron Bull is bi and is not race-gated.
