Ladies and Gents, I am closing the poll earlier than I had originally intended. So far, 772 people participated . I didn’t see that coming. LOL.

The tool that I used for this survey only allows me to see 5.000 responses. (To clarify, this is an example from the website: 550 people participate in a survey and everyone answers 15 questions = 550 x 15 = 8.250 responses.) I would need to upgrade now and that would become too pricey.

I will also post this in the OP to avoid confusion.

In any case, don't mistake me for condemning this project or somesuch. It's an interesting sociological question one way or the other, and I also completed the survey. I just don't think it's a good idea to celebrate the data without understanding what they mean.

You cannot make someone like something. In the example above, do you think women play The Sims because they have been conditioned to it? Or simply because they like it? Do you think they would play it if they didn't like it? I doubt it. A better argument would be that men keep from playing The Sims or even forgoing trying it entirely simply because they perceive it as being "for girls".

And frankly, you cannot how big of a role biology plays in these things, if at all. It certainly isn't the only factor. Many women like romance novels, naturally. The fact that they're one of the few genres specifically aimed at them probably plays a role, while men are more likely to avoid them for the reason above, probably plays a role there, but I think is likely biology has a fair bit to do with it. But these factors only affect tendencies. There are plenty of exceptions to them.

And interesting example is that, within the fantasy genre, the majority of fans of epic fantasy are male, while most urban fantasy fans are female. I don't think there's anything particularly "feminine" (as far as society understands it) about urban fantasy. Before you jump at me saying that epic fantasy is usually very male-centric, another ironic case is the one of the TV show Supernatural, which is clearly aimed at men and has very sexist undertones, yet most of its viewership is *gasp* female.

So does social conditioning play a part? Sure. Does marketing? Don't you doubt it. Does chance? You bet. And biology? I wouldn't hesitate to tell you it does. Now, is any of these factors absolute or determinant? Not at all. Frankly, if it were for sociologists, our culture would be a dull, grey, homogeneous landscape. I kid them, of course, but that's just because I have no respect for their job  :P

Wow!  Almost 800 people?  You actually can make some fairly solid statements about the demographics of BSNers and their preferences with a data set that size.  Cool!  I'm really, really looking forward to hearing the results of this.  (Confession:  I'm a huge quantitative data nerd......)

I just posted the results. There are more male players than female ones but not that many. Also boy, I'm feeling old now. A lot of people are between 20 and 29 years old. I had assumed that most players woud be in their 30ies. Something else I found interesting is that a lot of players still prefere the PC (*cough* take that Gamestop *cough). Most players are interested in the story of DAI, which doesn't come as a surprise.

Thank you all very much for your time. It was really fun!!

Thanks for posting those results.  I'm not too terribly shocked by the majority of the results.

To break down the race/class combinations a bit differently, from that poll, this is the first characters that we will be playing (as of now): (*note, I dismissed the three people who want to play as a dwarf mage.  How did Dagna get access to the survey and why did she answer three times!?!)

Human Mage - 15%

Human Warrior - 15%

Qunari Mage - 15%

Elf Mage - 13%

Human Rogue - 12%

Elf Rogue - 10%

Qunari Warrior - 6%

Dwarf Rogue - 6%

Dwarf Warrior - 4%

Elf Warrior - 2%

Qunari Rogue - 2%

Humans - 42%

Elves - 25%

Qunari - 23%

Dwarves - 10%

Mages - 43%

Rogues - 30%

Warriors - 27%

I'm a bit surprised by these results specifically.  I expected way more humans (qunari seemed to have cut into their numbers, while elves and dwarves seem about the same as DA: O, right?) and way more warriors (I wasn't expecting almost half of the players to pick mages).  Also, no one combination really stood out over the others.  I thought for sure human warrior and elf mage were going to be runaway favorites, but it's fairly even among the most popular five combinations.

Thanks for putting this together Caja!

5. How often did you play the previous two Dragon Age games?
Number of participants: 406

Spoiler

6. What race and class will you play on your first playthrough of Dragon Age Inquisition?
(You could skip this question)
Number of participants: 387

Spoiler

I don't understand the numbering here at all. The percentages are just... Huh? I can't even make sense of it enough to get any info from it.

I think I can help with that somewhat. See in Europe (not incl the Uk I dont know about RoI) they use a comma where we would use a full stop. So those results arent in the thousands.

I dont know why the sigma symbol is used (as thats not its purpose) or what the last column is for either in each of the charts the +/- is usually for error but even so..

I just want to chime in and clarify that, by virtue of this being a computer survey on a video game forum, we're going to have some inherently skewed results. Just being on the BSN gives a heavy slant toward reaching people that are primarily PC gamers.

Pretty sure if we had a survey that only showed up on our Xbox or Playstations, the survery would be saying, "Oh man, PC gaming is DEAD, huh?"

That's not to take anything way from the survey results, since they're pretty interesting, but let's keep that in mind before some people start waving their Platform Victory flag.

That is why this survey will give a good idea of the demographics of the BSN, not of Dragon Age fans in general ;)

Yes, you are right, of course. I was a biased because there was such a "hiccup" with the retail version of DAI for PC players in Europe (and Australia ?, I think). Personally, I had expected that it would be the other way round and more users would play on consoles.

To be honest, I've got no idea. The orange one stands for "arithmetic average", the other one for "standard deviation".

I suspect these mage numbers are a bit higher now b/c the game play demos have mainly featured a mage Inquisitor and the mage combat looks awesome.

It might also be because of the Knight Enchanter spec, which seems somewhat similar to the DA:O fan favorite Arcane Warrior.

I was surprised too - I expected the forums to have broader taste than the overall player base (80% of whom played human in DAO, mostly nobles, mostly warriors and mostly male) but it's spread out a lot more than I expected. I lol'ed at the three would-be dwarf mages.

I guess we can conclude that the forum audience isn't very much like the general audience, but  we already knew that. Interesting to learn what we are like, though. I was surprised that the skew toward PC was so strong, for example.

Gotta say. I'm pleasantly surprised. Romance didn't dominate the polls. Glad to see it honestly.

Well, yeah. We got to pick five things, and for the most part those of us who like the romances also like other parts of the game. (I also picked Story, Characters, Banter and Combat but I could have chosen almost anything. Especially if 'fiddling endlessly with the Tactics screen' had been on the list and I knew for sure that 'Mounts' included a pony.)

Hmm. I dont get what they mean for the orange one.

As far as I can tell the orange one is just taking the average for each row based on each class being assigned a value (mage = 1, warrior = 2, and rogue = 3). So to calculate the "Human" row it would be (.3641 * 1) + (.3592 * 2) + (.2767 * 3) = 1.91. I'm not sure this number is really that valuable though, since warrior/rogue/mage are like discrete variables and this is treating them as continuous (you can't be part mage and warrior).

Looks like most are going for a Qunari mage on their first play...

Dwarven rogue is the runner up oddly (I thought elven rogue would be).

Screw your rogues and your mages! Warrior master race is the way to go.

I was surprised by this too. I have read on the forum somewhere that dwarfs are not the most popular characters to be played but appearently they are on the way up now.
