I’ve been browsing through a chapter of Jesse Schell’s “The Art of Game Design” lately. He discusses the point that male and female players have different tastes and skills when it comes to video games and that those differences often show up in sales. It is suggested that the majority of games are played by men. However, Schell also points out that some games are very popular with women or that they appeal to both genders. Personally, I think that BioWare’s games can be placed in the last category (appealing to both genders). I assume that the romances are one of the reasons for that. But I’m curious if that’s really the case.
So, I set up a poll on demographics and gaming style for various reasons. In the first place, I am just curious and want to learn more about the demographic background of my fellow forumites. And in the second place I would like to know what it is that you find appealing about the Dragon Age Inquisition. With other words: What motivates you?
I realize that the results have no relevance from a statistical point of view and that BioWare has probably their own method of getting much better information about their target group. I also know that similar questions have already been asked, but the information is scattered all over the forum. So, last but not least, I thought it would be nice to gather and share that information.
Would be great if you could take the time to fill out the survey. I plan to leave it open for the next 3 days or so. I used a German tool but the questions are all in English. Once you hit the “Done” button at the end, you can simply close the window.
I will post the results later.
POLL
UPDATE, July 14th:
Ladies and Gents, I am closing the poll earlier than I had originally intended. So far, 772 people participated
. I didn’t see that coming. LOL.
The tool that I used for this survey only allows me to see 5.000 responses. (To clarify, this is an example from the website: 550 people participate in a survey and everyone answers 15 questions = 550 x 15 = 8.250 responses.) I would need to upgrade now and that would become too pricey.
I will post the results later today.
Update 2, July 14, please read
Impressive 774 people participated in the poll but due to the product that I was using, I am only allowed to see the responses of 406 of those people. My apologies for that. To be honest, I thought that with some luck maybe about 30 people would take part in it. LOL. Where do you all come from
?
I think it’s best to post the results also as graphics. Be warned that the graphics for questions number 5 and 6 look a bit strange. Maybe I used the wrong form *shrugs*. Anyway, have a look at the percentage there.

To break down the race/class combinations a bit differently, from that poll, this is the first characters that we will be playing (as of now): (*note, I dismissed the three people who want to play as a dwarf mage. How did Dagna get access to the survey and why did she answer three times!?!)
Human Mage - 15%
Human Warrior - 15%
Qunari Mage - 15%
Elf Mage - 13%
Human Rogue - 12%
Elf Rogue - 10%
Qunari Warrior - 6%
Dwarf Rogue - 6%
Dwarf Warrior - 4%
Elf Warrior - 2%
Qunari Rogue - 2%
Humans - 42%
Elves - 25%
Qunari - 23%
Dwarves - 10%
Mages - 43%
Rogues - 30%
Warriors - 27%
...
[...] The numbers there don't represent the percentages overall, they represent each row as a single entity. In other words, the numbers are disaggregated by row. So the 59% that you see for dwarf rogue doesn't represent that 59% of players are picking dwarf rogues. It represents that 59% of dwarf players are picking rogues. If you add those percentages up across rows, you'll see that each row represents 100% (and no representation like this can be more than 100%).
That's why I aggregated the results by taking the Σ, which is actually being used incorrectly in this case (sigma normally represents a sum, but they are using it represent an N or total number of observances), and totaling them up and taking the percentage of each number of answers by the total amount of answers. In other words, there were 484 people who answered that question, of which 29 of them picked dwarven rogue. That number represents 6% of the total N. In practical purposes, it means that only 6% of people will play a dwarf rogue the first time around, but 59% of all people who pick dwarves are picking rogues.
I hope that this clarifies things a bit.
