In my next femshep playthrough I'm going to not romance anyone in the first game, and try to get what little romance content there is for Samara in ME2 and 3 (Citadel DLC)... but does flirting with Kelly up until she dances for shep mess with the Samara content?

I don't think Kelly affects anything, but its been ages since I've played/checked.  And I don't think an ME1 romance affects Samara, but I could be wrong.

Since Samara's "romance" doesn't actually count as a romance, I don't think it would have any effect on Kelly coming up to your cabin.

 

I did go the "Samara romance" route in one game where I eventually wanted to end up with Traynor. I had it all set up to get her Citadel DLC content, then got impatient and looked it up on youtube so that I could get to Traynor. I think that is the only game where I had a single femshep do the Jame's meet-up. The dialogue was quite interesting. In my current playthrough, I think I am going to avoid locking in Liara until after the Jame's meet up just so I can hear that dialogue again since Liara will come to my rescue during the mission phase anyway.

That's what I was thinking, but I don't want to start anything with Kelly if it affects the Samara thing.

I'm not worried about Kelly so much, I've done that romance arc before. But it has been awhile so if there's no Samara consequences I'll let Kelly dance for me

No, I am talking about the apartment meet up when you can do the pull ups. James makes comments on various romances. Below are some of the responses, but not the comments on Liara or Kaidan romances, (he does not comment on a Traynor romance) nor his dialogue with a single femshep. The single femshep dialogue is rather interesting.

I don't think Kelly's 'romance' effects anything.  It's really weird it's like a stealth romance or fling that nobody takes notice of, even the Shadow Broker "must have missed that one".

 

But don't quote me, because I'm still learning things about the game after all this time.

I do the Kelly / Samara romance all the time; nothing with Kelly messes up anything with Samara that I know of.

I think it's funny how your LI from ME1, when you meet them again in ME3, thinks you've been faithful even if you chased both in ME2.

I am sure you know about the flirting part. The tricky part I found, was getting the dinner invite. For my Femshep I got a dinner invite after recruiting Thane and Kelly asked if I was into bad boys. The correct answer was "he's not my type." (middle option) For Mshep I believe you get a dinner invite opportunity after recruiting Samara. Tell her she is prettier and I believe you get the invite then. I believe another invite opportunity may come after the collector ship when you can ask her for a hug.

 

Several people claim that you cannot lock in a romance before the SM if you want her to dance for her. I am not sure on that one.

 

One thing that I know will mess up the cabin dancing is using the renegade option with Chakwas during the SM. If you say "the mission is all that matters," Kelly won't like that and won't send you an email.

I only brought Kelly up once for the dance. The other times I don't, but still do the dinner with her.

You have to follow the dialogue path that leads you to calling her Kelly, instead of Yeoman.

Your reaction to the VS survivor, if of the opposite sex, matters. Not sure about the exact dialogue path, but confirming towards her that you still have feelings towards the VS leads to having no dinner.

 

For the rest, you just have to be flirty.

 

(this is about getting the diner, I have no idea what locks out or in the dancing scene, never had it)

Thanks. Now that you mention it, I seldom get either the post-Thane or post-Samara convos. My typical mission order is to do all the Ilium stuff without returning to the ship. By the time I get back, Kelly's talking about somebody's LM problem rather than her recruitment remarks.

Another possibility on why something might go wrong is expressing interest in a new team member. For instance, I just picked up Tali and Kelly said she thought Tali was interested in me. I was afraid the paragon "I hope so" response would turn Kelly off, so I went with the middle "why?" option instead.

I take back what I said about a post-Samara recruitment dialogue. I just got that dialogue from Kelly but no dinner invite. Next mission is the Collector Ship, so I'll see if I get a dinner invite then. I am pretty sure I haven't done anything to mess things up, but we will see. May be a while, though, since I am going to load up another Shepard I have been working on in ME1.

Yes. Be nice to her throughout the game, invite her for dinner and during the suicide mission, choose the upper right dialogue that has femshep saying no one gets left behind and once the mission is over, Kelly will send an email having her in your cabin dancing.

As far as Kelly goes, the timing is based on number of conversations, it isn't specific to any one post-recruitment or loyalty conversation.  You just have to stay on one theme.

 

I don't recall what response I usually pick when she would ask about Ashley.  I didn't think that was a deal breaker as long as you picked all the other "flirty" responses in other conversations.

 

For the dancing scene, what is required is not to be locked in post Suicide Mission.  This is either from never starting a romance, or you can break off a romance.  If you never romanced Kelly, right after you talk to her post SM you will get an email from her.  If you were locked in then break up, I think you get the email after you break up if you already had the postSM conversation with Kelly.

Having dinner with Kelly isn't really hard to get, just act like you would to someone you like in real life who you are attempting to woo, i.e, don't say you're still in love with your ex or you're also interested in another person lol
