As someone who identifies on the nonbinary spectrum I go with what I feel more comfortable with playing, which happens to be male characters. I associate more with the actions and personality of male characters and I feel that their characters are more genuine. When I do play female characters, they are usually atypical of the female stereotype or act in a more aggressive manner where possible. I'll see how my first run of DA:I goes when the game is released, but I'll probably go with a male PC just like in DA:O and DA2, where the majority of my playthroughs were with male PCs.
Do you play both?

If given the option, I always play as male. Though, when that isn't an option (Tomb Raider, No One Lives Forever, etc.) it doesn't really bother me.

They're all very different characters, but I don't really consider myself to be 'playing' them so much as directing them. I usually just try to go for someone I think will make for an interesting twist on the story. I don't usually go for the paragon of virtue type, but in the case of Origins I felt like being an Elf solving a predominantly human crisis was different enough from the norm as it was without making her an anti-hero.
For Inquisition I'm leaning towards a Three Musketeers sorta vibe, with the extreme sense of loyalty and duty and idealism of youth, possibly becoming strained as the Inquisitor starts to believe his own publicity a little too much. I'm pretty sure Cassandra and Blackwall make up two of my musketeers, and whoever the third is will likely determine my Inquisitor's class.

No. I've tried playing male characters and it doesn't work for me.

I generally play male, unless I find a compelling reason to play female. (Like Sera)

I play as both. Playing as female puts extra to the rollplaying so I really like doing that. In fact my favorite playthrough of DA:O was as a female City Elf during my second playthrough. It was such an exiting journey filled with strong feelings (much because I played and Elf who's fiance had been murdered but a lot of it had to do with playing a female also) and ever since then I have started to play more and more as female character (but I did play as female characters before, also).
She started with hate and distrust for humans but fell in love with Alistair, when he chose to be King over being with her and didn't want to make babies with Morrigan she decided to be the one killing the Archdemon but when it was time Alistair refused to let her and did it in her place. It was my strongest rollplaying moment in any game, that conversation when she desperately tries to talk Alistair out of it. Later she started to blame Morrigan for it since she left before the big fight and hunted her down. My plan was for her to stab Morrigan but it just didn't feel right for her journey to end in hate so in the end she forgave Morrigan and just told her to go before she changed her mind.
I so hope I will get a just as great playthrough of DA:I because DA2 just lacked in decisions to make it as personal.

I'm pretty serious about playing as a lady person. It just feels kinda wrong to me to play as a male. I always try, but rarely get through a whole game. I hope I can complete at least one male run cause Dorian seems awesome. ![]()

I tend to play gals first, frequently without a romance and with my favorite default personality traits. I'm a gal, and I like playing cantankerous, noble female protagonists who're slightly befuddled by everyone elses' feels and drama.
It's how I figure out the game and poke my head into the world. The next playthrough, I'll branch out, do some interesting things, and maybe on playthrough three, I MIGHT play a dude. I usually get around to it about a third of the time, looking at Dragon Age and the other games I play with pick your gender (a certain monolithic MMO in particular).
Except in Mass Effect, for some reason, where I have played dudeShep in each game, and then abandoned him about 2/3 of the way through.
I'M TRYING A TRILOGY RUN WITH HIM RIGHT NOW THIS TIME FOR REAL FOR SURE.
On the other side of things, my favorite character from SWTOR was far and away an imperial agent dude, so much so that I keep threatening to make a second version of him just to play through all of that again cause it was so awesome.

I tend to play both. Furthermore, I think the big difference to me is the differences in voices. In ME Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale had a completly different style of voice to them which made the game fundamentally different in many ways. One tending more towards a renegade, and the other towards a true blue paragon. So, when I play Inquisition I hope to try out at least four play throughs with all the voices down so I can experience everything. There is already a distinct voice between the Brit Male and Female from what I have noticed.

Since the game is about choices and characters, for me it's about putting myself in the role. This includes gender, sexual prerference and principles etc. So I always play as a male. I've noticed my characters tend to look similar, but not really much like me. I think for DA3 I will attempt to make a character that looks closer to me.

While I play males a majority of the time, for most Bioware games I do at least one female playthrough, if not more. In DA:O I played through 2 female Wardens (city elf and human noble) and in DA2 I had 2 female Hawkes to my 2 male Hawkes, though I replayed the males more often. There's even a few games like KOTOR2 and Fable 3 where I actually prefer playing as a female. So there's some variety in there, yeah. Even when I play more of one gender though, I do try to leave some variety between the characters' personalities and choices, so I can see more content.

I'm not all that interested in female PCs for the most part. I do make a female PC mainly to see what females look like, but that's about it.

I always play as a female. I haven't been able to complete a BioWare game as a male character since the first Mass Effect. I can start a few male save files, but I never finish the game with them. If I love this game enough, I might play a male for Cassandra in my third run. I'll see how far I get.

I enjoy the role play aspect of the games I play, whether it's on the computer or the tabletop. My DM's have gotten good at asking me what I'm rolling, then requesting I "talk rough" when I play a male. Only because they're the ones who have an issue looking across the table at my cutesy-female face when I'm roleplaying what's typically a larger-than-average male (I like playing paladins, so sue me).
So I like settling on a canon when I'm playing a RPG on the computer, which generally requires multiple playthroughs of, yes, both genders. Just to see what ultimately feels RIGHT to me, personally. I also play around with romance options, even though I'm hetero myself. I have little issue seeing what sort of perspective lies on the other side of the game, is all. My Bioware canon characters end up pretty dang diverse, then:
Origins: my Warden was a Cousland female who married Alistair. Someone else is supposed to be Queen? Seriously, no.
DA2: my Hawke was a male mage who sided with the Templars then thumbed his nose at all those hoity-toity nobles who wanted the Viscount to get married and stuck close to Fenris, instead. He's very committed to the elf, complete with punching out that scuzzball who flirts with him during MotA.
Mass Effect: loved the Kaidan romance with a femshep, honestly. But my canon ended up being a male Shepard with Liara, and he stayed faithful to her throughout all three games. That romance was gorgeous. Why is it, btw, that no male sheps can look good aside from the original model, sigh?
SWTOR: my main end-game characters are both males, a scoundrel who romanced Akaavi and an operative who romanced Temple. But the other characters in my legacy are almost invariably female -- a juggernaut, a mercenary, a sentinel and a vanguard trooper. I do have a male sage, though. And I'm currently leveling a commando who's a human male.
I intend to explore quite a few playthroughs with Inquisition. Characters who've caught my eye and are definitely worth rolling a specific gender at least once (or twice, or more) include Cullen and Dorian. Solas and Iron Bull, eventually. Cassandra is growing on me, thanks to the recent videos. Still unsure about Blackwall, since I'm leery of some tragic romance. Regardless, I'll be busy for a long while, hehe.

Love playing as female characters, ever since I found that renegade broshep came across as a douche while renegade femshep was a total badass.
I usually start as females now but will be doing pt1 as a male because ohmygod Cassandra

I play both. My main warden is male and Hawke is female. I would generally try male first and replay more as female, and the main reason are the voices to be honest.

I always play female. Playing as a male feels odd. The only time I play a male is when its with a pre-made character for a JRPG or when the choice for female is terrible. I'm not a big fan of being forced to play the combat hooker.

As a rule, I have a preference for female protagonists (which is the opposite of my real-world gender, just in case people are mislead by my avatar and my name [which ironically means "Elder One" in Old English]). However, since I don't play s/s romances my "main" incarnations will be male if there's a romanceable female companion who represents things I really like. So my main Warden is male because of Morrigan, and my main Shepard is male because of Miranda (though I wish I hadn't done that with the way her story goes in ME3). My main Hawke is female, and most likely so will be my main Inquisitor.

My canon heroes are always guys, but I do roll at least a couple lady alts on subsequent playthroughs.
