I play both. My canon Warden is a male Dalish Elf, while my canon Hawke is female.

For me the female Hawke has a better voice actor than the male Hawke.

I am female and identify as such, so I tend to play female protagonists whenever the option is available. Most games don't provide that option.

With BioWare games, most of my playthroughs tend to be female, but I will play as a male once or twice for variability's sake and sometimes for LIs. That being said, I do intend to play as a male twice in Inquisition as I'm interested in Cassandra and Dorian's romance arcs, but my first and "canon" playthrough will be a female qunquisitor.

Eh, It depends really. Typically, I'll play Male, but if I feel that a protagonist works better as a female, I'll do that.

I usually play both sides but in Dragon age I am always a female so I will stick to that.

Yeah I play as both men and women. I like to see how the characters respond to each gender.

I was going to play only male characters again on Inquisition, until I saw the female Qunari inq.

A powerful ashen-skinned giant? Sign me up! She will be my 4th or 5th playthrough.

I am a cisgendered male, and I tend to stick to male PCs, especially with games like Dragon Age where I can play a character who also matches my sexuality (since I'm also gay). I have tried female PC playthroughs, but for some reason in the Dragon Age games, I haven't stuck to it - in DAO, I tried and tried, but wasn't that comfortable with the female Warden, due to that disconnect and a disconnect of the actual gameplay, given how i find the early part of Origins drags for me, and I hated the performance of female Hawke's VA. Since there IS gender locked content in Inquisition, in terms of romances, I'm probably going to eventually have a few female Inquisitors, but it's not my preference.

I play both.

The majority are female, since I am female and find women more appealing in various ways. Male characters are never my main, but they are sometimes strong favourites. I loved my male Cousland who married Anora much more than my female Cousland who married Alistair, for instance. There was something about him that made his story more interesting to me. I also loved the voice for male Hawke, so I have a few runs with him. I expect it will be the same with the Inquisitors. Usually the only thing needed for me to play a guy is a pretty face and a pleasing voice, and Hawke got it right with both. Dorian and Cassandra are obvious incentives too.

My preference has changed over time. I used to be I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR AND DO AWESOME BADASSERY...but now I actually prefer to play as a male character. In Mass Effect and Dragon Age, I prefer male Shep and Hawke. But then I always romance a dude, so I suppose I prefer to play as a male character but I still pursue the LI that I find attractive (look, voice, attitude, etc.) as a straight female. The fact that I can is part of why Bioware games are boss.

I play both depending on my whims at the moment, though i do have a slant towards playing women. And non-humans. Exploring outside the everyday.

I can really only seem to play Males, I have a hard time sticking with female characters I make in RPGs even if I really want to try something new.  Especially in BioWare games that are so story driven.

I'd love to really try and give it a go with Inquisition, but a Male Qunari Mage is too hard to pass up, and then there are always big bearded Dwarven men too.  I suppose I could try a third playthrough with a Dwarven or Qunari lady.  Dwarves and Qunari are best races.

I really want to see what one of those Fex look like though...that fabled 5th sentient race of Thedas in Par Vollen.  The primitive yet sapient race that has long since been rooted out/converted to the Qun.

But that's a discussion for another time.

If I can my first playthrough is always a human male. I try to make him look like me and it's basically a self insertion, it's just how I prefer to be introduced to worlds. After that is when I like to play as characters that would be different from me, thus most of playthroughs end up being females, the exception being kotor, that's the one that tends to be more 50/50.

Though I must say that the character creator can heavily influence this first option. For example in Destiny I just couldn't make a human that remotely reassembled me, so my warlock ended up being female.

So yeah, I have a self insertion character and then a bunch of characters I roleplay as, the majority of those being female (on a sidenote the self insertions don't always make it into canon, my main Hawke is female for example).

I play both, for me it depends on the game. DAO male, DA2 female and ME 1,2 and 3 male.

I m not sure about DAI but i will probably go with female.

I play both in RPGs, but I play them in different ways, much like Silcron above:

When I play male characters, I generally self-identify with them, I consider them to be me. So I make them look somewhat like me, I only make them races and classes I could see myself being (usually human [maybe half-elf or similar in games with those type of races] with a combat centric class [possibly tech based in more sci-fi style settings]). I have them make the kind of decisions I personally would make.

When I play female characters on the other hand, I don't self-identify, so I find I can play them as a character, rather than an extension of myself. As such, I'm happy to play races and classes I couldn't imagine myself being. I can make a far greater variety of appearances on female characters. I can play characters who act in ways I myself couldn't act, so I can see parts of games that my male characters, as me would never do.

Then end result in RPGs is that I usually do one playthrough - either my first or second - as a male character, and all the rest as females.

Just curious when you play these games do you try out both genders or do you prefer to stick to what you like mainly? Personally as a female player whenever I get the opportunity to play a lead character in a game I take it happily. That's my preference, however I have tried one playthrough as a male warden in DAO, simply to try something different and romance Morrigan. In this new DA I can see later playthroughs testing out different races/romances and genders, just for variety and curiosity as it just looks so much more detailed in this new game and fun.

So how bout you lot, do you prefer to test out the variety of options or do you prefer to stick to what you like mainly?

50% of my playthroughs are female and the other half are male. I have no issues playing either gender. :)

I'm a straight female and DA2 was the first game I played as a male character by choice :D I found in my second playthrough as femHawke trying to romance Fenris that it just felt... weird. Not trying to offend anyone who romanced Fenris with a femHawke but when I did it it just felt kind of cliche or something I guess. So on kind of a whim I rolled a male Hawke and really liked it! Over the three DA2 playthroughs which I really enjoyed, 2 of them were male and the other was a female Hawke with Isabela. Totally intend on continuing to play both male and female characters in DAI, especially for Dorian and so on. For the bisexual characters I'll probably just see how I feel about them and what I can get into character most to romance them with... :)

I have 3 male and 2 female Wardens. I have 3 male and 3 female Hawkes. I play both gay and straight characters as well. When given the option, I'll play any race... except Dwarf. I've never been able to get around the stubby legs, whether it's Dragon Age, WoW, LotR, or any other Tolkien based medieval fantasy. It's not that I don't like either, Varric and Oghren are my bros, I just can never finish a game as a dwarf.

Personally I always go Male in first 1 or 2 playthroughs, but I throw in a few female runs to try out everything. I'll do M/F, F/M, F/F romances easily over several runs, but the only romance arcs I do not see are M/M romances. I sometimes watch you tubes of the M/M romance arcs, but I didn't for DA2 as I didn't like the m/m romances, I hate Anders and Fenris is iffy, I think he works better as paired with F!Hawke or Izzy (my opinion only).

I absolutely agree with you on the m!Hawke and Fenris thing. First time I played DA2 as female and romanced him but it felt kind of off for some reason. Now I always play a m!Hawke and romance Fenris...I just can't stay away from him! I think David Gaider said that he wrote the romance with m!Hawke in mind. My first DAI playthrough will be male human warrior for Dorian! I can't wait for that majestic mustache

I'm a straight male and since the vast majority of games I've played feature a male protagonist with little to no customization options and I prefer to make my own custom characters (no, I don't play Sheploo or use any of the default DA looks for anything other than a base appearance to mold), I tend to go crazy with my options and play as every race, class, gender, LI, and personality combination I can think of.  Each character is my own, and I want their appearance to reflect that as much as possible.

When playing games that give me this amount of customization, I tend to go male first before eventually branching out to female (my 5-6 Shep was a FemShep, my 3rd Warden was female, and my 2nd Hawke was female).  This time around, I'm going with a female character to switch things up.  Since I decided to go with f!Dalish for my first playthrough, the announcement about the last LI (Blackwall) and the race-gated LIs (Cullen for humans and elves and Solas for elves) didn't affect my choice one bit.  My female characters tend to be straight or bi, sometimes les, while my male characters are mostly straight, though I have a few that are aromantic.  I've done almost every romance in ME and DA (haven't done Traynor or Cortez in ME and I haven't done Seb or completed a playthrough with Morrigan romanced in DA) so gender and race-gates aren't an issue for me since idc about playing as a female character.  In fact, the VAs for female PCs tend to be better than the VAs for the male PCs since they show more emotion and range in their tone.

Since every single one of my PCs are customized, their voices always fit for me.  Seeing Sheploo or default Hawke talking just seems... odd to me.  I guess it's because I'm so used to seeing a custom Shep or Hawke speaking that I find their voice to be out of place on Sheploo or default Hawke.  * shrugs *

Haha Dorian's moustache will be one of the highest high points in this game I think for me... even when I'm not romancing him I might just bring him along so that I may bask in his glorious moustache xD

When I get the chance I usually opt for female protagonist, in the yonder years almost all protagonists were male so that's why.

However I've had both male and female chars in most games I've played with the option.

I find when the PC is voiced I prefer the female voice actors, Jennifer Hale <3.

Depends on the game for me. I'm female and never bother playing any gender other than female in games like elderscrolls, but in dragon age I usually have 1 or 2 male characters. The majority of my characters are still female however .

I always end up playing both. I find that whenever I play female, I always end up self-inserting, leading to choose the same choices, romance, etc. But when I play male, I get to shape a completely unique personality, whether I want to be honorable or a renegade. I was actually surprised to find out that some people have trouble role-playing as the opposite gender. I admit that I identity more when playing my own, however, I still enjoy playing the other.
