What can I say? I love to roleplay.
I always play as a woman first, but I've completed the games with seven wardens and seven Hawkes (plus a couple of Orlesians) and the gender balance overall is 50/50.

Same here.
Female preferring to play male characters here. I do, however, tend to make at least a few runs with a female character or two; there's even a few games where I prefer it, but it's a case by case basis. Even though I generally default to male, I prefer to have the option to be female available.
I'm probably in the minority of female gamers; I completely understand why most women want to jump at the opportunity to play an awesome woman protagonist. Can't blame them, especially given the majority of the game protagonists out there. I have fun with it, too. It's just for me, I prefer to RP to get into a character I'm not - to play someone other than myself - and it's easier to get out of myself if I play a guy. I already know what it's like to be a woman - let me get out of that for a while and try something different.
That, and I have more fun with the character creator options with males. Facial hair options plus... I tend to like "strong" features in both men and women, and I find most character creators are too "delicate" when it comes to female faces. And they often feel a bit too similar, no matter how I build their faces. There's exceptions, of course, but it just seems like there's a narrower window of shape and style variety for facial structure in the women of most CC's, at least when compared to the men.
Perhaps DAI will be better in that regard - I certainly hope so. Even though I don't play me, it'd still be nice to be able to recreate something akin to my actual face shape without having to roll a dwarf. ![]()
I only play as a female in most games, unless there is no gender option as in The Witcher.

It really depends on a variety of logistics. What are the best voice options? How do the aesthetics of the males and females look? Is there a breast slider? These are the things that must be considered.
I play both in everything from Single-player RPGs to MMOs . but for romance I generally only do Straight M & F (being a Straight male , I do prefer the straight romances) and sometimes but very rarely F/F. Some armor / weapons look better on one gender over the other , or animation wise perhaps one i prefer over the other for casting , but always my gender ratio is a perfect 50/50 I like to have a wide variety of characters to play as.
Have no problem with playing opposite gender, I always play both when given a choice.
I plan to try everything. *_*
I don't have preference of gender of character, it's pretty much equal split for me. Like I have finished DAO with two guys and one lady, DA2 with one guy and one lady. In DAI I have planned two qunari ladies and one elf guy so far.
I tend to play a male character first, but yes. I'm quite content playing either male or female.
I play both Genders, but I mostly have it depend on a ) the Race or b ) what I played before (both in Terms of other Games of the Series and Playtroughs of the same Game). However, every Character I play is straight. I wouldn't feel comfortable playing a Character that wouldn't be.
So, for example, I started with a dwarven Warden. He was male, because I think dwarven Males are Badass and he was a Badass. Dwarven Females were more like "cute". So, Dwarf Male Warrior Warden. Romanced Leliana with him, since I'm not exactly fond of Morrigan's Attitude.
My World States are distiguished by the Class, so the next one would be a Warrior Hawke. The Warden was male, so this Hawke would be Female. She gradually turned Pro-Templar, so Fenris was her Choice.
The next playtrough was the Mage Playtrough. Here, I chose the Warden to be an Elf. But the last Warden was still a Male, so this Warden would be female. Elven Female Mage Warden was the Way to go. Romanced Alistair, because Zevran's casual Attitude is repulsive to me.
This would now lead to a male Mage Hawke. Romanced Merrill, because Isabela's casual Attitude is repulsive to me.

I TRY to play both, but in the end I revert to playing a female because that's what I most relate to.
I mostly play males, but I have on occasion played female character. Mostly to engage in lesbian romances, because I am a shallow vulgar man.
I tried to play female characters in Origins once, but it was simply too hard for me to immerse myself. It also felt awkward romancing a man. And playing without a romance seems so boring to me ![]()
I generally play both genders and all classes, although not necessarily both genders as all classes. Just so I can explore as much of the game as is available.
I once re-played KOTOR 16 (?) times for each gender, for each class...
The OCD was strong at that time...
Thankfully, I didn't do that with Origins...I think I'd still be playing it if I had...

A little over the top, but still...

Leliana never came to mind?
I just play female if it's an option.
I played a Male Warden till just after Lothering to get the Morrigan achievement but I couldn't bring myself to play past it - I couldn't get into being a man.
I really don't like having to play as a guy - I feel like a spectator rather than a participant.
I tend to use female characters unless not given a choice and then I only purchase the game if it's a party system rather then a sole character game. I just can't bring myself to care about a male character to put the time and energy into them I do a female character. Take for example Jade Empire the last game I chose a male hero in and even then only once. I spent long enough at the two rivers mountain fighting ghost to get him to some where in his teens so by the end of the game the male character was level twenty seven or so. On the other hand I leveled up both female characters to over level thirty fighting those ghosts so they both reached the level cap well before the end game. A male character just doesn't inspire such dedication from me.
This behavior has been building in me a long time though. I remember in the JRPG's I would play on playstation when I would get stat boosting items I always gave them all to my favorite female character. She was the sweet heart of the game to me so she got all the best items and pampering. It just felt right that she got the special treatment.
Since I focus on story and characters more than things like gameplay or graphics I like to play as characters from various races and gender if the options are there. Mostly I play as Male characters, though. I also like to have some variation in my playthroughs, though, so I usually have at least one pt with the Female protagonist.
Both
Typically, I play a male, because I like romancing the females as a male, since that's what I do. I'll usually, eventually, get to playing all of them unless dislike a certain aspect.
In Mass Effect, I never romanced Liara (boring and bland) and Allers (boring and bland). I only romanced Miranda and Jack once (because I prefer the friend aspect) In Dragon Age 2, I romanced Isabela once, but I'd never do it again (because the friend aspect was better)
In Dragon Age: Inquisition, I will definitely play both. I really want to romance both Cassandra and Cullen, and I'd have to play both for that.
