I primarily play as women PCs if a game allows, as that's the kind of hero(ine) I prefer to see in my games.

However, if there are romance opportunities in a game, and it allows for M/M, then I'll often play that first.

I don't mind trying both but I don't always finish with both.

i play both
First gay male mage
Second bisexual female warrior
Third bisexual male rouge
Fourth straight female mage

I don't have any issues with gender of the character i can still identify myself with him or her , they are still in some aspect "me" and i express myself through them so there is no dissonance there for me.

And i can romance all the things  B)

In origins I play both.

In 2 I usually play female, not too fond of Male Hawke's voice!

I will likely play both again in inquisition, having a choice of race and voice makes me want to experiment :D

I tend to go female on the first playthrough, then I like to roleplay different characters with different motivations so gender is not an issue and I choose whatever I think will fit best.

Class usually doesn't influence which gender I choose except in DA2 with its ridiculous anime swords (that look silly on Fenris too). Had to roll a MaleHawke to play a two-handed warrior on this one.

I usually play male characters (the main exception being if I really don't like the VA for them), but if I'm doing multiple playthroughs I'll always do at least one as a female just to see the differences.

I'm one of the dreaded straight male gamers. I usually try out every race/gender combination available. The only game I never did this in was DA2, partly because I couldn't stand the VA (She sssssssoundssssss like she putsssss too much emphasssssisssssss on her esssssesssssss.) And partly because the game wasn't good enough to warrant doing multiple playthroughs.

I play both, mostly to see content that I've paid for.

But that said as a male gamer, I only very really play as a male if it's a Silent Protagonist, because then I can read the dialogue in my own accent. And as such can 'relate' to / pretend to be them more.
Playing as a Male speaking protagonist is just off putting, mostly because, more often than nought, it's that whiny american accent of a guy you would never get tired of kicking, and I just can't relate to / pretend to be some guy with an American or English accent. So yeah, only ever played DA2 and ME once through as a 'MalPC'.

So yeah, maybe it is a tad sexist, or sexualisting women, but when it comes to 'voiced protagonists', the Female option is just much nicer to listen too. And since I can't be 'immersed' due to the whole 'It's not my voice' thing anyway I might as well then have some nice eye candy to stare at for 80+ hours.

Because you can say many things about Bioware games, but they do render really nice butts.

As a rule I do prefer playing as girl, pretty much as a self-insert

But also usually in DA and ME I have both genders PCs. In DA I always create 4 main PCs, 2 f, 2 m and try to more or less equally divide them by race, class and personality types

See this is were I'd have to vehemently disagree, I thought Hawke's voice in DA2 was sexy as all hell. She much much better than the male version.
I will admit though this might be due to my always picking the sarcastic options, and I have heard that the more 'angry' options it's not as convincing.
Or it could just be me because I have a huge soft spot for the default Female Hawke design. (that's in spite of the fact that I actually look like the default Male Hawke design)

I'm a biromantic asexual female and I play both genders.

I'm not the person to role-play as myself, and while that is fine and dandy I feel that it would limit what I get out of the game. Personally I prefer to sort of create a fully realized character who is separate from me, but because I've written about them and discovered who they are I can role-play them comfortably no matter their gender/sexuality/morality.

However I know that it's not for everyone, hell my own brother only ever plays females when he gets the choice. I asked him why and he said "I dunno, it's different and I like that." Different strokes for different folks.

Most of my characters are female.

I've tried playing a male character in DAO and DA2, but abandoned them very quickly. Just couldn't get into it.

I did make it through one playthrough of ME with a male Shepard, despite Mark Meer's voice nearly putting me asleep. It's just sooooo soothing and dreamy. G'nite.  -_-

I always play both, because I feel I would be missing out on so much content if I limited myself to one gender. I also try to play a "good" play through, then a "bad" one. Of coarse that fails miserably and all my characters end up being bastards. Art imitating life as always.

Just curious when you play these games do you try out both genders or do you prefer to stick to what you like mainly? Personally as a female player whenever I get the opportunity to play a lead character in a game I take it happily. That's my preference, however I have tried one playthrough as a male warden in DAO, simply to try something different and romance Morrigan. In this new DA I can see later playthroughs testing out different races/romances and genders, just for variety and curiosity as it just looks so much more detailed in this new game and fun.

So how bout you lot, do you prefer to test out the variety of options or do you prefer to stick to what you like mainly?

I play both genders, but I typically start with a male character (usually human). Who I romance depends on my personal preference.

I play both. I have two timelines going on.

01. A Human Mage Male Warden, a good guy from the Circle of Magi. This was a gameplay where I tended to go towards the "good/diplomatic" otions, like saving Connor, saving the Dalish Clan, etc. My LI was Zevran. The sequel to this story focused on a Male Warrior Hawke, whose LI was Fenris and sided with the Mages.

02. A Human Warrior Female Warden of nobility origin. She was pure evil. My LI was Leliana. The sequel to this story focused on a Female Rogue Hawke, whose LI was Isabela and sided with the Templars. She also pissed off everyone (lots of rivals among her companions).

In the Mass Effect and DA series, I do, and multiple play throughs at that.

I play both, though my "serious" characters tend to be female. The male characters end up being the evil playthrough, like my murderous city elf or ornery dwarf commoner of Origins and my aggressive bloodmage Hawke. More than likely the same will be true of Inquisition.

Always liked playing a male lead character best, but I know that in DA:I I'll do a female Qunari playthrough simply because the Qunari are badass giants :P

I'll play both genders, with each race. That will give me enough play throughs to cover all the romances.

I've played both genders in every bioware game. However, the only game I did a straight romance for was Mass Effect (Garrus & Thane, Miranda). In Dragon Age games, I am just not that interested in doing that when it's a lot more varied.

I like to play as a female since I am female :P There isn't many games that let you have an option and since 9 out of 10 of my playthroughs of Mass effect were Femshep, I don't see that it would be any different with DAI.

I tried to be dudeshep but the voice acting was hard to listen too. So, if the male voice in DAI is good, I'll give it a shot :)

RPGs should have options, should allow as to romance just about anybody, without those silly and annoying LGBT crap. Otherwise than that - it's a lot of fun during the second playthrough, see your new character and choices in a different light.

So you want to be able to romance everyone, but you also want everyone to be straight? How would that even work? If everyone was straight, you'd only be able to have all the men or all the women.

(Not to mention that 'silly and annoying LGBT crap' is important to lots of players because of representation, but focussing on the practical here.)

wow...LGTB crap? Talk about respecting all human beings...

As a straight woman myself I my canon will be a human woman. And I will obviously try all races at least once :) And classes.
And at least a few male characters  ^^

I will romance them all ;)

If the option is there, I usually play female first (matches my gender). In games that encourage replaying, like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, I want to try all the classes and races, so I mix in some male characters after a few play throughs to shake things up. I'll probably do at least two for Inquisition, because I want to check out all the voice acting.

I might bump up my first male Inquisitor to second play through this time, because I'm gonna sweep Dorian off his feet.
