Are you trying to troll the troll thread? ... ^_^

There are too many trolls. Why are there more troll races than any other monster or player race in the game?

Perhaps trolls are more likely to survive experiments to alter them due to their regenerative properties.

I suspect there are more dragon subtypes than troll subtypes. Then again, it is 'Dungeons and Dragons'. Perhaps we sould change it to D&D&T - Dungeons and Dragons and Trolls (oh my).

And it could have been worse - gnolls were originally going to be a cross between a gnome and a troll.

Pretty sure they were for a while, but only during 1st edition, and it was excised in reprints before 2nd edition came.  Personally, I like it better than the canids we ended up with.

They're hyaenids, not canids. They're more closely related to civets than dogs.

I wonder if that means that gnoll coffee is popular in Faerun?

Ah, sorry about that.  I see the resemblance now.

It may be as "popular" on Faerun as civet coffee is on Earth, though I don't know how popular that would make it.  I don't know anyone personally who has drunk it, or wants to try it.  I'm not much for "delicacies".

That's what I always felt, there are so many types of trolls because their regenerative powers make them extremely adaptable.

Of course it could also be because the basic troll is a popular creature.

They were certainly popular with cruel DMs who insisted on characters only being able to know how to defeat trolls if their lore skill was high enough (or if they'd encountered a book or NPC in the game who had told them beforehand), and who refused to allow players to metagame with their own knowledge of trolls.
