Hey guys! So, I didn't keep up with the info coming out for DA3 for the longest time, but after this year's summer of game and electronic entertainment expos I've hopped on board again and I'm absolutely *thrilled* with what I've been seeing. To the point I wish I hadn't watched the trailers and demo vids because now I am deeply pained by having two more months of waiting to play it. I guess the part I'm most excited about is the female qunari. :) I can't wait to play a female inquisitor who actually looks like she has some heft to her for once. In honor of the female qunari arrival and as a means of entertaining myself until the game releases, I'll be doing some quick 'sketch' sculpts in Sculptris of various qunari. I've got one in progress right now, and I'd like to do one of Iron Bull soon.

I did a little more work on her face/head today and pulled out the clay to begin her neck and torso. I've been looking at the vids with the female qunari PC in them (and at a lot of other fanart) and it occured to me how most artists tend to depict the female qunari as essentialy humans with horns that look like an afterthough. The horns are a pretty defining charicateristic of the race for me and shouldn't look clipped in at the hairline like an accessory. They are growths coming out of the head, and I don't see any reason those on the female qunari should be any less prominent than those of the males. I just used a pretty basic swept-back shape for this one's horns, but I wanted to be sure the base of the horns are upfront and even project a bit over the brow before turning back.

I also decided to only give her hair on her crown and pull it back into a short, bound braid. I'll be finishing that out onc I'm good with all the rest of her proportions and alignment. Then I may do some hair/horn variations just to experiment, and of course, start my Iron Bull sculpt. That one may be tricky as Sculptris does not allow you to swap back and forth between mirrored and non-mirrored modes, so I'm going to have sculpt him normally first and then do the scarring over the eye afterward.

Ok so, I'm pretty happy with this one overall. I'll but some more armor on and fix up the back of the head/horns and then she's pretty much good to go out to Blender for some size editting because I think I'm going to 3-d print this one. I like it a lot, and it's a good standard bust, so why not. Maybe I can do the whole Inquisition host and line them up on my mantle or use them like the little chess pieces on a war map. Hahaha.

I think I'm going to call my inquisitor Ursa. Ursa Adaar. Ursa of course being the latin for "bear" which when applied in this scenario makes me laugh for many reasons, not the least of which is that my inquisitor is probably going to be very surrogate-mother to Cole, who I am finding heartbreakingly adorable from what I've seen of him in the clips, and mama bears are no joke ya'll. Also the only other qunari is named Bull and well the uppity in me just has to give that guy a run for his money even if the nicknames might be more appropriate if reversed given Bull's appearance and predilections. (yeah I went there, no shame)

Speaking of, Iron Bull is next but will be tricky for me as I said above. I suppose i could try to do it all non-symmetrically as I would if I were working in clay by hand, but honestly that'd probably take longer than just doing his face pre and post eye gouging. If I do get my female qunari printed I'll post that up for you guys, too but it may be awhile on that. Turnaround on those can wary a lot.

Moving on. Started IB.Got the rough head shape but I still have to fiddle with the horns and way his jaw meets his neck. Obviously he's a lot bulkier than normal males and I find myself going back and forth from my sculpt to his screencaps as reference because his anatomy is so exaggerated and he has features not typical of other qunari. I am going to try to find a brush suitable for doing the facial hair, but my computer is a laptop not built for this kind of work and it may simply not have the power to render details that fine with enough clarity and exactness to look any good. Maybe the Sculptris/Blender communities have some ideas for me that won't require particles (which can look really stupid if you're not doing hair that is long or dense anyway).

I have a really awesome idea for a Cole sculpt, but if I did it it'd be a full-body model and I'd have to do it in Blender get it posed right and to get the detail I need. I keep seeing a lot of "masquerade" themed fanart on here (presumably due to Vivienne's party and the tastes of the Orlesian empire, etc) and I though who would benefit from that more than Cole?! Seen but not. I give him an Edwardian raven mask with one of his big floppy hats a a feather cloak. Sad prince. I like the floppy hats on Cole, too. I don't know if there is a legitimate plot-related reason for them or not, but I like them because from a visual story-telling standpoint they kind of make him look more like a child. When kids wear an adult jacket and the sleeves trail or little girls put on their mom's heels and there's a three and a half inch gap in the back. XD

Ok so I turned off symmetry to experiment on his eye. I think he's turning out pretty well. Still looking for a decent way to get the hair detail. I think Cole will be next.

You have decent start, however, "he" is more of a "she". The puffiness of the lips and the slenderness of the jaw is taking away from the masculinity. Thinning the lips and widening the jaw may help immensely.

I don't know if you've actually been paying attention to his art, but competitively speaking, Bull *does* have more pronounced lips and a narrower jaw than other male qunari. This is offset by this wide horns/neck. My Bull is a bit "prettier" than the version that you see in the game, but he is most definitely a he.

Stereotypes like givng every male character a jaw that makes them look like they eat bullets for breakfast can go out the window with the female qunari horn-hairclips as far as I'm concerned. Gender typing is boring and uninspired.

Just stating what I observed. Seeing where I may make this observational mistake based off of my criticism is your choice. I didn't say he needed bullet biting jaw, but perhaps just a bit of definition to hint at hidden masculinity instead of the plainly feminine features.

Your criticism is based upon a stylistic choice, not a "flaw" in my sculpt, and you are stating what you *think* not what you observe. To state what you observe would be to say, "Your sculpt has a narrow jaw and full lips". You're not saying that. You're attaching a personal bias. "Your sculpt has a narrow jaw and full lips and I think that makes him look too feminine". To which the appropriate response on my part is, "I think he looks amazing and I'm gonna get him printed in all his 3-d glory and post that sh*t across the entire face of the internet!" I think that's a sentiment that Bull would appreciate.

Now that my dear is no way to act to healthy criticism. This is where I take my leave. Good luck with your future artistic endeavors and may your ego not get too big.

Assuming people have to agree with your criticism would suggest yours already is.

Oo hoo snap.

Hello ladies and gentlemen! Welcome back to the House of Rem where the men are beautiful, the women are men, and they *all* GO HARD.

I'm sorry I been gone so long. I had a lot of social engagements, and then I went to PAX where I played Gigantic and it was a total hoot. I made the player reactions video on Youtube. If you can guess who I am I'll give you a cookie. I think it's a good thing I've been busy though cause it means I'm *that* much closer to the DA:I release.

Anyway. I think I said my last post I was gonna do Cole next but when I sat down to start working tonight that's not what ended up coming out.

Long absence again, but a lot of stuff has been done. I bought a big screen TV, and a new Xbox One, and paid off my preorder, of course. I'm pretty much all set-up for the game at this point, including my escort in the event of a midnight launch. (yes, I have people for that)

I also continued sculpting and mulling over the game. I have a more finished Solas here and an in-progress sculpt of a second swipe at a female qunari. It's actually the same mesh as the first one - I'm just re-working it from that base model.

Anyway quick check-in gotta run, children.

Like everybody and their mother, I've been watching the Youtube vids on DA:I's character creator, and I tell you what - I was rather disappointed in the options available to the female qunari. I mean, I think I read somewhere they were kind of a late addition as a playable race so it makes sense they might not have had as much go into them, but the hair for the female qunari is terrible. I'd be more ok with this if there were at least more horn options, but there weren't even really many of those either... As a result, I find myself going over the same female qunari mesh I started in my last post with different horns, and I finally went in on one and turned off the symmetry to start sculpting some over-the-shoulder long hair.

f2-2.jpg

I expect I'll do several iterations of various hair/horn combos just for some practice. If anybody has any ideas, feel free to send me a doodle. Here's the 'starter' mesh I'm using for all my other variations. I really like the horns on this one. They have the same forward and backward facing prongs on the end like the daggers in the DA games often do.

f2-1.jpg

I want to do one with shorter, stubby horns like the female inquisitor in Matt Rhodes' illustrations, too, because I'm very happy he chose to depict a female in the main role. After seeing Manshep's face everywhere on the ME material it was nice to see a female front and center for some of the Dragon Age art.

Your sculpts are really cool :) I like them all, but I think my favourites are the final two of the female Qunari, particularly the one with the hair curling over her shoulder.

Hey kids! So, here we are. The game is out, I have beaten it and am on my second playthrough now, and I love it to pieces you guys. I also find it *hilarious* just how highly appropriate this game is to my tastes. House of Rem, indeed. I keep picturing my squad of Vivienne, Iron Bull and Dorian rolling around Thedas slow-mo in hater shades to "Glitter" by Ghostland Observatory. It is too perfect. Well. Almost. The only way it could be more perfect is if Krem was a joinable NPC. Who wouldn't want to go ass-whoop some Venatori with Hannah Billie? Forget breaking out the casks, give us the drums. The Inquisition needs the beat!

Ah. Yes. Some of you old birds may know me from my Mass Effect fanfiction, and I'm cooking up one for DA:I now. Bull/Quiz of course. I can totally get on board with that even if in life I'm far too much of a domme myself. I expected that from him, tho. Doms can recognize other doms. I hear sociopaths can do the same thing. I wonder what that says about us...

Anyway, anyway. This is an art thread and it's Christmas day, so I got something for ya. It's very rough right now, and rather ambitious for me, but here it is :

quizbull1_by_remthemighty-d8b872z.jpg

This is a toughie for me. It's two separate meshes in a program that offers limited mesh operations, and it's posed so I am working entirely freehand with no auto-symmetry. It requires *a lot* more moving and rotating the meshes than normal. It's about as close to a good-old fashioned hand sculpt as I can get only I have no armature. Which sort of blows. But there it is! You never know if you don't go. I have put everything else aside for this, because I'd really, really, really, like to get this done and printed. This one is nice and displayable, not just a standard neutral bust. I am probably going to keep it in two pieces, but only if I'm confident each piece will stand alone without an overly-large base. Then I can make the bases so they fit together like puzzle pieces and you have two nice interlocking statues. Sort of like a split dragon, tooth, neh? It will be my belated Christmas gift to the forum.

You can see I'm still a long way from that happening, of course, but considering I went in blind with two start spheres not even knowing what I wanted, it's shaping up nicely. Now that I have my composition in mind, I'm probably going to do some drawings to help me line up my sculpt here. I want Bull's left hand touching the Quizzie's face lightly, and the right hand holding Quizzie's braid. Wrapped around his hand you know, firm but gentle. Those are my thoughts.

Also, to whoever at Bioware is responsible for the Crestwood zone, I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE,
