Hi all ME fans,

I am a passionate Dragon Age gamer, and while waiting for Inquisition, I have decided to give Mass Effect a try. I have never player any sci-fi game, only high or dark fantasy. The main reasons I loved Dragon Age were the brilliant story and the intense romances. But I heard ME has it all as well, isn't it?

So I wanted to ask you, which ME game should I try first? Chronologically ME1, or the award-winner ME2? Or maybe is there a reason to start with the third game?

I do not have much freetime for games now, so I think I may only play one single game in the next few weeks. I would appreciate any advice from you all!

ME1, pick adept, and speed run the scenario in easy difficulty.

Don't bother exploring the barren wastelands with the clunky rover.

Try ME1, then ME2. That's all.

And then ME3. The best game in the series.

I made the mistake of starting with ME2. After finishing ME3, I went back and played the entire trilogy and really wish I just played chronologically. All of the DLCs are a must have (my favorite being Citadel for ME3).

I'd say play them in order to get the best of the series.

Play the first, than the sceond and than the first + second again (maybe repeat that once more). After that play the third game and start the whole Triology again, maybe with the MEHEM if you prefer that.

While I started with ME2 when it came out (at that time I had no idea what the game was about, muy bf bought it and the moment I saw him creating a femShep I decided to give it a try and here I am years later crazy obssesed about ME lol), I would recommend starting with ME1. And like someone said already, running it in easy, focusing more in story... Combat was a little painful in that one, at least for me. Then go for the other 2, cause they are totally worth it.

It's best to do them in order, yeah. While ME1's combat is a little clunky, the game's OK. I agree with Vapaa that a lot of the planetary explanation can be skipped. The combat and leveling systems start to break down past level 45 or so, so don't feel you have to be a completionist.

Also, interacting with the shops is mostly a waste of time. Random loot drops scale to your level, so you're usually better off just doing another mission if there's something you need unless the random generator really skunks you in a particular category. Spectre-class weapons are an exception, since they never drop randomly; that shop's worth checking out when you've got a boatload of cash.

Why would you recommend travesty that is Pinnacle Station to anyone?

Bring Down the Sky, Price of Revenge, Stolen Memories, Overlord, Arrival, Lair of the Shadow Broker, From the Ashes, Leviathan, Omega and Citadel are DLCs to get, ranging from solid to outstanding. Firewalker is a bit mediocre and Normandy Crash Site is just boring. Get alternative costume packs only if you really like characters and weapon dlcs tend to make games too easy.

Since I never played the dlc, I wouldn't know if its bad or good.

Yep, play from 1-3 in order.  Agreed, skip Pinnacle Station DLC for ME1, but otherwise get the other DLC's for all three.  Also, you could skip to Mako planet searching and simply go for the main events (if you don't feel like being a completionist).  In ME1, pick up and sell picked up items and buy your team the top level N7 weapons ASAP.

In a way I wish had to patience to do many playthroughs like other players to see how the various romances go (and can be carried through to ME3, if of course the character survives).

Thank you all! Guess I'll start chronologically with ME1. I have seen there are no mods on Nexus for it, but I'll look on BW project site. Would you recommend any mods at all?

ME1 is the true RPG, ME2 an Me3 not so much, if you ever played spec ops: the line me2 n 3 fall in there with that sort of game (personal opinion)

There aint really any mods for ME just basically save editors, face codes or if your into it me3 ending mods, you can edit coalesced file to add armour/casual wear/weapons etc but nothing on the scale of Dragon Age an for me personally the farting about is to much hassle for the outcome, i would recommend the me2 faces website along with save editor thats about it, easy to use an understand tbh

since you plan on playing the trilogy i will say that is the best way to do a romance, although there is at points between games that will annoy you if your anything like me.

Im prob one of the few that loved pinnacle station, but im a combat freak and it catered to me, for me thats all citadel dlc was a enhanced version of pinnacle station nothing more and thats the only reason i enjoyed citadel was the arena

ME1 is the true RPG.

"Action role-playing, third-person shooter", just like rest of the games in the series  trilogy. Or what a heck makes ME 1 more RPG than sequels?

OTOH, they're free anyway.

Either it's because ME1 has a skill that governs bullet spread while 2 and 3 don't, or it's because of the rotten inventory system.

No mods that I know of that offer extra content like MEHEM in ME1. However, if you have a good PC and a bit of patience, you should definitely think of applying some graphics mods to ME1. For all of it's qualities, time has not been kind to it for it's looks  :( It really does help and bring it to par, at least to ME2 and ME3.

Also, there is a Nexus mods page for Mass Effect 1, and while might not have much, it's still worth a look:

Good luck, and have fun! It really is fun ride.

OP - while I agree that many of the side missions for ME1 can be skipped (if you're not a completionist, that is)....

VERY MILD SPOILER

....do the side missions that your squad mates give you, especially Wrex, and the one based on Earth's moon.

Depends on how patient you are. Mods can always create problems and you need some time to set them up correctly.

EDIT: Dont forget the official patch though or the game will become unplayable at some point!

If this is your first foray into the Mass Effect Universe you might as well begin with Mass a Effect 1 and work your way throughout the trilogy chronologically. It would be much harder to begin with later games and go backwards ( and you will want to play ME1 at some point ) since it has aged the most. The series peaks with ME2 but if I guess you might get something out of ME3, most gamers do ( I'm not one them ).

Buy the trilogy set, and start with the first. Not only is it first chronologically, you won't get spoiled by 2 and 3's combat first.

Also, before starting your first playthrough, install these:

1. Cerberus Pass for ME2 [something to that effect]. it is free now, and it gives you Normandy Crash Site, Zaeed: Price of Revenge, Firewalker Pack, and I think a weapon pack [could be wrong]. Make sure you have those installed before playing ME2 for the first time since they are free and give you more content.

2. Mass Effect 3's online pass and all of the MP DLC's. They are all free and give you the optimal Multiplayer experience.

3. Most importantly, install the free Extended Cut for Mass Effect 3. You will be VERY glad you did. Makes the ending a lot more tolerable.

Then, if you find you really like the games, I'd suggest:

1. Bring Down the Sky for the first Mass Effect.

2. Kasumi: Stolen Memory, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker, and Arrival for Mass Effect 2. Especially those last two, as they are plot important

3. From Ashes, Leviathan, and Citadel for Mass Effect 3. The first two are plot important, and the Citadel one is just awesome, but I won't spoil them.

And if you simply LOVE Omega in ME2 and LOVE the combat in 3 a lot, then I'd suggest Omega's DLC in ME3. It is only worth that $15 pricetag if you absolutely loved the ME3 gameplay.

I think if you start with ME2, you won't appreciate ME1. The progression of the story from game to game and the differences in the styles of each game really make the trilogy.

Start with ME 1.  The combat progressively improves thoughout the series, so it's a little wonky going backwards.  Also, your decisions in ME1 affect ME2.
