ME2 is the best, but you should play the whole trilogy starting from ME1.

ME1 has the best story/plot definently start playing from it. Also since you're from PC download the "MEUITM" mod for Mass Effect 1. One installation and BAM.

I would definitely start with ME1 and progress through the series from there. You'll get the full story that way and be able to use the save import system so that the things you did in ME1 are remembered and affect certain events.

For a first time player I would recommend starting with ME1 and mostly/only doing the story missions. You can always do another rerun with side missions if you like the trilogy enough. The story missions are the bread and butter of the games, and especially ME1 has a slow start up if you do a lot of side missions, imho.

I started with ME2.  I had never heard of Mass Effect, but saw it as the #1 pick in a top 10 list for 2010(?).  I actually find the beginning of ME2 to be a bit weak comparatively to the rest of the series.  If I could do it again, I'd definitely start with ME.  Unfortunately it's a little dated, but still a good game.  But damn, the latter 3/4 of ME2 and the first 7/8 of ME3 are fantastic!

I think the galaxy seems like a bigger place in ME1 than in any of the others. Also characters will tend to explain to you about their species and about history (all things Shepard should really know but I guess she doesn't read much or something) so it just makes sense to start there.

I actually think ME1 is the best game in the series anyway.

As with many RPGs ME1 has a bonked difficulty curve. Which is especially evident if you play as an adept where the start of the game can be painfully difficult (on harder difficulties) but as you level up it becomes a piece of ******.

Oh yeah and make sure you find out what the button is for using the scope with the Mako's gun (I played on Xbox so I dunno what it is on PC) because my first playthrough I didn't know about it and it made life much more difficult. I actually love the Mako now.

First one. I wasn't even aware of 90% of the side missions' existence my first time through but it wasn't a deal-breaker or anything.

I was lucky that I got the whole trilogy on sale for only 15$

I have always put off playing mass effect due to it being a shooter. And I HATE shooters.

Luckily, it has a casual mode and I have to admit it was fun. The side missions plot were worth the effort and it was nice seeing and hearing about the npc quest givers that I helped in the sequals.

I'll agree tthat doing the side missions early on can make it seem slow, but overall if you liked Dragon age then you'll like Mass effect. In fact playing me1 to me3 was a great experience.

Overall, get ME1 just to try out.

Don't bother with the haters.

First be sure to get all story related DLCs for each of the three games.

Start with ME1 then go with the second and finish with the third.

Take your time and ENJOY each game, play chronologically and have fun.

As someone who picked up the ME series after enjoying Dragon Age, I highly recommend playing them in order. If you're like me and not really into shooter games, I personally found playing as an Infiltrator on easy was the best pick. The others career choices were too difficult for my first time through. You get to use a sniper rifle which means you can pick off enemies at a distance and take your time doing so. You also get tech abilities which are very helpful with loot and synthetic enemies. My other advice is to go on one of the side missions for your first Mako experience. It takes some trial and error to get used to the cannon, so don't be like me and try and get Liara first. I got creamed trying to get past those Geth cannons the first time! Take your time and enjoy it. This series became a very close second favorite to the Dragon Age games for me. Let us know how you are progressing!

I was in the exact same boat as you (OP) a couple of months ago. I got the trilogy and started with ME1 and have never regretted it. I played ME1 on easy the 1st time but took my time and got to know the universe. It does take a bit to get into it and the combat is clunkier than 2 & 3 but I think it is worth it. I installed all of the free DLCs and eventually bought many of the others. I'm currently in the middle of my second run through of ME1 with a new background and skillset for my Shep and am playing on harder difficulty and finding all sorts of things/dialogue/quests that I missed the 1st time.

I'll go back to DA in a few weeks to ramp up the hype for DAI but I feel about the same towards the ME and DA universes.

Yeah; I know .... that painfullllll wait for DAI.

Although my fav. is ME2; I'd go with ME1->ME2->ME3

Get the '' Bring down the Sky '' DLC for ME1, '' Lair of the Shadow Broker '' and '' The Arrival '' for ME2, '' Leviathan '' and '' Citadel '' for ME3. The other DLCs are , of course, just as good as the other DLCs, but if you don't have enough cash atm. I'd prio those.

OP - while I agree that many of the side missions for ME1 can be skipped (if you're not a completionist, that is)....

VERY MILD SPOILER

....do the side missions that your squad mates give you, especially Wrex, and the one based on Earth's moon.

You forgot Talis as well
