Hi,

I have a problem with Mass Effect. Since two months I have a new PC (Intel Core i7-860 CPU, 4x 2800 MHz, 6GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD4890)  with Windows7 (64bit) as operation system. I have reinstalled Mass Effect on my PC and copied the old saves to my new PC. I have no problems starting the game (as admin) and loading an old save. But each time the game switches from the normal gameplay to an ingame video my complete PC freezes/dies.

The strange thing is, that before playing again Mass Effect on my PC I've played Dragon Age: Origins without any problems on my new PC. 

I really do not know what could be the reason for this crash? Drivers should be ok. The PC is only 2 months old. I am not sure what could be the reason for this crash (sound, graphic,...) Maybe someone could help me to fix this problem?

Are you saying your entire system freezes? Does it shut the computer down or reboot? Or just crash back to the desktop?

It might be the power supply is underpowered.

The entire system freezes. No chance to get back to the desktop. I have to shut down the PC manually by pressing the button.

Ok...two things here...it could be drivers. Update to the latest graphics and sound drivers for your system. Also, you may want to make sure you have motherboard drivers installed (if you are Intel based, download the INF chipset utility from their site).



Other then that, what kind of power supply do you have? Wattage? Model #?

PowerSupply: Cougar, 550 Watt



I've also checked the graphic and sound driver. Both are the current version.



The entire system is new and the operating system was already installed. I only installed the software which I need. I did nothing concering motherboard drivers.

Ok...there have been two ATI graphics driver releases since yours...Get the latest from www.ati.com. Also, you dont have motherboard drivers installed. Go to www.intel.com and install the latest "INF chipset utility"

Strange, I thought I would have the latest graphic driver? I use FileHippo to check if there are any new updates available. Maybe I downloaded last month the driver for the 4800 series but not for the 4890 series. Currently it is not possible to download a new graphic driver. The download page is down. I will check for the update tomorrow.



I have downloaded and installed the "INF chipset utility" (INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 5, 4, 3, 900 Series Chipsets, 12/22/2009, Version 9.1.1.1025).



As soon as I could download and install the new graphic driver I will test Mass Effect again. I hope afterwards everything will work fine. Thanks for the great support!!!
