David Gaider Interview:

https://www.youtube....XCpKDqFb8#t=127

About 9 min in. Direct quote:

''There are some things that you can do with blood magic that you can't do with lyrium, like mind control. Because blood magic is not just a source of power, it's a type of power, so that allows you to control other life force, to control lives, where as lyrium is just a source for all magic, so you could use lyrium to power blood magic as well.''

I'm so confused right now. I listened to it like 10 times. Like.. what?

To put it simply, blood magic is a type of magic, much like elemental magic, healing magic, primal magic and spirit magic. And just like how you can use lyrium to empower any of those magics, you can use lyrium to empower your blood magic.

Other than that, it's pretty straight forward, blood magic is the only type of magic that allows you to control minds.

It makes sense.

Gaider likely fumbled his words a bit, but I think he was trying to express that it's an issue of how lyrium can power some spells instead of blood magic, but it depends entirely on whether or not you had a sufficient amount of lyrium to power the spell. For example, Merrill wanted to cleanse the shard of the taint, but she lacked the necessary amount of lyrium to power the spell, so she had to use blood magic instead.

Hearing Gaider talk about how the Joining and the phylacteries are forms of blood magic, and how the view on blood magic is subjective, was interesting.

Yeah, but you can also use blood magic as a source for.. your blood magic? And you can use blood magic to.. empower blood magic? Bloodmagicception..

Yeah but you don't power up gasoline with nuclear energy.

Now you confused me. He said nothing of that sort. The source of blood magic is through blood sacrifice and dealings with the demons, you can also use lyrium but it won't be as powerful, that's it.

No but what he basically said was that you can use lyrium to power blood magic.. Which means you can use lyrium to mind control people.. through blood.. without blood.. or.. without using blood to power your blood magic, cuz you power your blood magic with lyrium instead of blood.

I confuse you because now you understand what I was trying to say, but it's Gaider's words, not mine.

I'm not sure what you're trying to prove here. You power blood magic using lyrium, you don't have to spray your blood in the air to trigger your blood magic spells. Refer to Dragon Age 2, Idunna mind controlled you by doing visibly nothing.

No they're your words, he clearly said you can power blood magic using lyrium. You're saying you can power blood magic using blood magic.

Admittedly, he fumbled his words a bit, but he does clarify in that interview that there are things you can do with blood magic that you can't do with ordinary magic, and he cites mind control as one example.

So let's get this straight:

1) There is a school of blood magic spells. These spells can be cast through usage of mana, lyrium and blood.

2) Blood is just another source of power like lyrium and mana. But casting spells through usage of blood is not blood magic? Or are both blood magic, but one is Blood magic as in Fire magic and the other is blood magic as in lyrium magic? Like Qunari standing for both race and religion?

He clearly states that you can do blood magic through use of lyrium, which means you can do it through mana, which means you can do mind control without any spilling of blood, and drawing power from said blood.

Yeah but you don't power up gasoline with nuclear energy.

But you might use gasoline to start the machinery to make nuclear energy.

Here, how about this.

You could use coal to boil water to make steam power.

Or you could use uranium.

Either way you are generating power from a steam turbine, but one adds to the effectiveness of the other.

He just said you can use lyrium for blood magic and it wont be as strong.

And yes you can control people without spilling blood as Idunna did with Hawke in DA2

What is there to get to the bottom of?

You can cast spells with blood.

You can cast spells with lyrium.

You can use lyrium to make blood magic stronger.

You can use blood to make lyrium magic stronger.

No but I like thinking and making sense. I will explain one more time, pls try to understand and read this very carefully:

You can cast spells with blood.

You can cast spells with lyrium.

Yes. Makes sense. Now, for all intents and purposes blood sacrifice OR cutting yourself OR grave robber are no different from using lyrium, or mana. I can draw power from the blood to cast ANY spell, just like using mana.

Now here is where I get lost:

Let's for the sake of this discussion call mind control ''dominate mind''. Dominate mind is a spell, like ANY other spell BECAUSE it can be used through use of mana, OR lyrium OR blood.

Now why are we calling dominate mind a blood magic spell? Why do we toss it into the blood magic skill tree? Why does blood magic skill tree even exist?

Why not just call dominate mind a forbidden malificar spell and call it a day?

Desire demons use dominate mind, they don't use blood magic.

No, but you can jump start a nuclear reactions using chemical explosives.  That's how fission bombs work.

I think essentially David Gaider was trying to say that Lyrium is just a power source for magic while blood magic is both a power source and has it's own types of spells and is limited on what spells it can do as well.  I'm thinking it's something like blood magic can't really be used to heal in the traditional sense.  Like using your own blood to heal yourself is impossible for example.

But how can blood magic be anything besides a power source just like lyrium IF lyrium can power up ''blood magic'' spells? You can use spell heal through use of blood.

You can use lyrium to make blood magic stronger.

You can use blood to make lyrium magic stronger.

Both are exactly the same thing, it doesn't make any sense.
