Everybody loves cake! -- And shortbread ;)

- Type
- Decoration
This is the cakery that has been suggested by another member who has been sending treats to BioWare for a good couple of years. They have experience in filling large orders and delivering to the BioWare base. They are located in Edmonton. Check out their site:
sitehttp://www.cakesbycandace.net/
They can guarantee a nut-free product and they are very health conscious so we can look into doing a few gluten-free and sugar-free options. They also deliver.
Eric suggested shortbread cookies -- you know, cos he is awesome like that -- that we could get the flaming sword sugar coated on as a side to our cake -- this would be cool.
250 cupcakes were sent to the DA team for the "CupcakeQuistion" and Allan told me that they were all eaten so me are looking at a large cake/s to be made.
And lastley I just want to add that BioWare will not accept any consumable products that aren't made in a commercial kitchen -- that's no home made goodies, sorry guys.

Nut-free is good. I can't even begin to say how much of a pain trying to find nut-free bakery goods is - every birthday at our house is a new hunt for something that won't kill my son.
Flavors.. we should find out if they can do different flavors or if the cake has to be just one all the way through. If they can do different smaller cakes to make one big one then we should definitely make sure Cullen's writer's favorite is included somewhere (I will message Allan to ask if he could go stealth-rogue and find out for us). Unless it's something truly exotic that nobody else likes.. lol

Agreed. If there is an option to make different smaller cakes, we should see that Brianne gets her favourite flavour. However, she isn't the only one involved in creating Cullen. What about the artist who sculptured him or Liz, the producer, who made sure that he looks hotter? If we want to be fair, their favourit flavors should be in the mix as well.
Have you already discussed a design? Do we want a huge Cullen-shaped cake or something more neutral? As I understood the cake isn't just a thank you for Cullen but also a thank you for the overall game. In which case we could maybe make a cake with small DAI marzipan figures (or whatever), similar to this one:
We would have all of the companions and advisors up there instead of Mario and his friends. Maybe Cullen could be a prominent figure, standing in the middle of the cake or something like that.
Another "neutral" cake would be a dragon shaped cake. Like this one.
But it's really just an idea. I'm fine with whatever we come up with.
If we do just Cullen for the design, I think it would be much more personal if one of us could provide a unique drawing of Cullen (squinting at Mellora or Gala or anyone who has a talent for drawing).
As for the flavour: It's hard to tell, of course, because people like different things. I woud not make the cake too sweet though.
Edit: After catching up with the thread in the other group I realized how big the team is (100 +). One cake will probably not be enough... What do you think?

omg. I *love* that dragon cake. I don't think it would ever get eaten.. too pretty!
As for writer, artist, and Liz flavors - agreed. I'll amend my note to Allan.

(I will message Allan to ask if he could go stealth-rogue and find out for us)
Allan says Liz and Brianne would probably respond on twitter if asked, but that they might feel that it's more of a team effort, and he's probably right about that. So.. it's probably best not to single anyone out and just make it for the whole team. There are always a lot more than just the writer and artist involved. He also did not know who the artist might be.
He did ask if it was secret and I told him yes.. and asked if there was a consensus about a favorite type of cake on the team.

Allan's so nice
Here's what he had to say:
If it's a secret it'll be pretty difficult for me to get the specific cake preferences of some people without it raising questions hahaha. I figured this was the same group as Boomshakalakaboom, I just didn't know the specific messaging.
As for flavours for the *team* as a whole, probably also difficult to discern really. DragonRacer's crew had a wide variety, but nothing to deviating from "comfortable" flavours. I mean, for our "snack attacks" on wednesdays for donuts, we had standard glazed donuts, a few chocolate dip ones, and so forth. Nothing too fancy. It may not make *everyone* the most happy, but the gesture itself supercedes the details of specific tastiness. It can be a lot of chocolate and vanilla cakes and people will be like "holy jebus fans sent us cake!? Om nomnomnomnom"
It's cool to say thanks for Cullen. If it were me, I'd make sure to still mention the game as a whole as it makes it clear the gesture is for everyone working on it, but part of your affinity is as the Cullenites so there's no harm there I don't think.

All the ideas sound great to me. I love the shortbread cookie idea and think it would be a nice touch in addition to the cake
Maybe having vanilla, chocolate or a small red velvet for "blushing Cullen?"
Maybe we can get estimate on what the dragon, and character cakes would cost and go from there?

Awww, such a cute mail! ![]()
+1 for a more neutral cake, with a 'thank you from the Cullenites'. I mean: I look forward to the whole game, not just the minutes of screentime Cullen will have ![]()

I think gigglelambs war table piece is a good example of something neutral.

I love the printed cake with fan art idea. I think they'll get a real kick out of that! ![]()
What if one of the pictures on the cake was a cartoon of all of us? It could be our avatar or a real picture, whichever. That might be cute. Cullen could even be in it. ![]()
I agree with "thanks from the Cullenites" or "from the Cullen thread". While I'm sure there is room for Cullen in our message, I don't want to leave out the game as a whole. I think it would be nice to honor and show our appreciation for the entire team.

Agreed on the neutral flavours. I think vanilla and chocolate are good. We could add lemon if we do three sheets.
Gigglelambs war piece table is an excellent example!
Maybe we could ask the bakery how much a sculpted cake and a cake with a picture on it would cost? I mean, it can't hurt and we would have all the facts.
Edit: After I thought about this for a few more minutes, I think it probably better to keep the cake simple. Well, at least it's cheaper. But maybe there could be a nice decoration surrounding the picture.

Argh, my browser suddenly stopped working. I wanted to add that I really like Nimlowyns idea with a cartoonish picture of us or a picture that represents us somehow.

Maybe it could be portraits of us, OR a group shot with Cullen in the middle. ![]()
I wish I could draw it myself but alas, I am not an artist.

I think the group shot idea is cute! And on one of the cakes it needs to say something along the lines of: "Thank you and congratulations on all of your hard work on DA:I! (and thanks for Cullen! ;P)"

- "every lion has a pride"
- "show me your face"
- "he is not hot enough! Make him hotter"
^^^^^ you know those pieces? I thought they were really funny.
And then going with your idea Nimlowyn maybe after Gala has finished her comic maybe we could ask her to do a cartoony group shot of Cullenites with their thumbs up and a spotlight on Cullen in the middle? To go along the bottom of the collage.
This is of course if Gala gave her permission
Just another idea

I was thinking for the representation of Cullen that we could do something lighthearted -- like a collage of Gala's cartoons of him for example.

Love it! One thing I wonder with the collage and group shot on *one* cake: do you think it would be too busy? Or are these cakes a lot more gigantic than I am imagining, lol.

I'm not sure what the actual size will be, I have asked for measurements in my email. So when she replies we will know if it would look good or not.

I'd say the layout would look like a comic book page instead of one big picture.

Here's a comment I posted in the Cullen private group discussion earlier. I'm posting it here too because it is more relevant to this discussion.
PS - I like the Cullen fan art idea very much.
Hi, I got the invitation to the group but can't post or anything there yet. Perhaps, it has to be approved or something but either way I'm locked out for now.
I wanted to add to the discussion that my sister was actually a cake decorator in a former career and so she had some advice for us regarding costs.
In her experience it is cheaper to have a standard cake shape with molding chocolate or fondant figurines on the top than an elaborate sculpted cake. It's simply easier to make the little figures and pop them on top rather than sculpt cake itself. Sure they can do it but it's time consuming, fiddly and therefore expensive.
For example of what I mean here's a pic of a couple of birthday cakes she's made for my kids this year (the meerkat cake she threw together with under a days notice!.)

Maybe we could get a cake with chibi Cullen and his companions on it? This might be more affordable than an epic dragon or something.

If they can print some fan art and use it to decorate the cake, that would be a great idea. It's not like we are having a wedding, that's true, we don't need a cake to impress the aunts. We need a cake that looks good, tastes nicely, and is big enough for everyone ![]()
I don't know if I can manage another fan art in time, it's better if we don't rely on my, because my life is very unpredictable thanks to my job.
I'm sure I can make somethng like this again:

But making a picture with all Cullenites? That would be really difficult for a lot of reasons. First of all, we all won't fit into one shot, or we will be so tiny that they won't see our faces. Second, BioWare people will have no idea who the hell are those chibi-faces, lol. And third, I don't want to be eaten
There are also matters of design, because I would have to design everyone's character, and that's a LOT of work, I don't have that much time even now, when I'm on my vacation.
I will have even less time in 2 weeks, when I return to work.
So if we want to decorate a cake with a Cullen, we should probably pick one big decent image (or make a suitable fan art) of him, and have it printed on top of our cake. The sides of the cake can be decorated with swords of mercy.
Now this kind of leads to another problem: I don't really like printed cakes
They kind of look shitty, at least those I saw. I like when cakes look hand-made, so I would prefer a little chibi-bamf Cullen figurine with a sword raised on top of that cake, and the rest of the cake to be quite simple, minimalistic, decorated with templar and inquisition symbols, and a "thank you" message. But then, if the cake is big, little Cullen will get lost on it. Maybe we could order 3 Cullens? DAO, DAII and DAI Cullens? I don't know. If the figurines are not eadible, the team could keep them as souvenirs
Bonus, bonus ![]()

Well, this cake looks kind of ok, I guess? It's quite simple, but cute, not overdecorated, and not too expensive, I hope.
Imagine it in red&gold, with swords instead of stars, and a fan art instead of disney pic. And without goat droppings.
We need to decide now how big our cake should be, and ask how much that would cost us if we pick a similar design to this.
If something like this gets approval of the group, I can start working on teh cake sketches.

I like the idea very much to do something lighthearted for the Cullen themed cake. I'm not familiar with the first two but the "make him hotter" is a great one.
I'd say the layout would look like a comic book page instead of one big picture.
I'm not sure what the actual size will be, I have asked for measurements in my email. So when she replies we will know if it would look good or not.
However, I am not sure about the comic book page. Maybe I misunderstood something? Do you want to choose three different cartoons and put them together on one page? If so, I think it might be better if we choose just one and go with it.
Here's a comment I posted in the Cullen private group discussion earlier. I'm posting it here too because it is more relevant to this discussion.

That's what I meant earlier.
But making a picture with all Cullenites? That would be really difficult for a lot of reasons. First of all, we all won't fit into one shot, or we will be so tiny that they won't see our faces.
LOL. That woudn't matter so much
.
Second, BioWare people will have no idea who the hell are those chibi-faces, lol.
Again, I don't think it would matter much.
And third, I don't want to be eaten
Well, that's a problem, of course
.
There are also matters of design, because I would have to design everyone's character, and that's a LOT of work, I don't have that much time even now, when I'm on my vacation.I will have even less time in 2 weeks, when I return to work.
Ah, well, it's a pity but I think that everybody understands that.
So if we want to decorate a cake with a Cullen, we should probably pick one big decent image (or make a suitable fan art) of him, and have it printed on top of our cake. The sides of the cake can be decorated with swords of mercy.
Why don't we use one of your artworks that Boomshakalakalakaboom mentioned above? (Btw, did you have to put so many "shakalas" in your name, Boom?
).
Now this kind of leads to another problem: I don't really like printed cakesThey kind of look shitty, at least those I saw. I like when cakes look hand-made, so I would prefer a little chibi-bamf Cullen figurine with a sword raised on top of that cake, and the rest of the cake to be quite simple, minimalistic, decorated with templar and inquisition symbols, and a "thank you" message.
We could do different kinds of cakes though. There are over one hundred people on the team. One cake won't be enough anyway (or it would have to be one really gigantic cake). I actually like the idea of having different cakes with different flavours but it depends on the price, of course. If we had three trays we could have
- Neutral cake with a printed picture on it (like Gigglelamb's war table)
- A Cullen cake with a little Cullen figurine on top and swords/inquisition symbols for the decoration
- A lighthearted cake with a cartoon
Well, the only problem I'm having with this is that two Cullen cakes could be too much of Cullen. Maybe we should decide between 2 and 3.
But then, if the cake is big, little Cullen will get lost on it. Maybe we could order 3 Cullens? DAO, DAII and DAI Cullens? I don't know. If the figurines are not eadible, the team could keep them as souvenirs
Bonus, bonus
Do you mean three Cullens on top of one cake or three Cullen cakes? And the figurines are not eadible? I though they were made out of marzipan... My world is shattered right now
. But yeah, if they keep the figurine it's probably better than if they ate it.

I was worried too that a printed cake might look shitty but then I found some really nice ones. This one has really great and strong colours (*cough* they will probably cause cancer *cough*) :

About a picture of us all: I wouldn't dismiss the idea yet. If we can't put ourselfs on a cake, maybe we could send them a collage with the letter? We could even do a collage in photoshop with real life pictures of us. Only if everybody is okay with that, of course. It could look like this:
Edit: I would even volunteer to make one. Again, only if people are comfortable with it.
