In many games I tried all the various weapons and their combinations.

I found all of them valid except maces.

We find many good 1-HD-swords, 2-HD-weapons, lots of daggers and some really good axes. But maces? The only one I know about which is at least somewhat good, is the one of Branca, should one decide to kill her (what i always did).

I also checked the wiki and saw some other somewhat acceptable maces, but none of them are - in my eyes - a full-value compensation for one of the really good weapons.

I am aware that a mace has a very high armour penetration, but could this alone be good enough to decide for this weapon?

Perhaps I understood something wrong in all these years I play the game; always an option

The Reapers Cudgel in Awakening is pretty good...

Maces are good for ignoring armor, but the crtical hit chance is always  low....  for me its never been a good trade off

Funny that. Have always thought trading the maces in game for gold was quite good; for the Reaper's Cudgel, it was great!

I used a mace once with a DW warrior.  I think with the off-hand.

Maces are the slowest damn one-handed weapons to swing in the game, and don't do enough damage to make up for the wait.

I REALLY wanted to make a Dwarf Commoner who dual-wielded with an axe and mace (like the concept art), but it just took so freaking long I had to switch over.

Even with AP bonus, maces are weaker than longswords or waraxes. The Reaper's Cudgel is very powerful though. It's an excellent weapon for talent spammers and dual strikers.

IMO they disregarded maces in some ways. Just wonder why?

All other weapons are valid to get through the game without problems (weapon-wise), just the maces would be somewhat a disadvantage.

BTW, wielding a mace in the off-hand....in an old thread on the old BIO-boards I read something about the usefulness to have different weapons equipped, while dual-wielding.

IIRC the overall opinion was, that it makes no sense at all; I just don't remember the reason. Someone knows respectively remembers a bit more about this?

It makes no sense because the advantage that a generic mace has in terms of AP is offset by it's lesser base damage and damage variance, in addition to being slower than all other 1H weapon types.

The Dual Striking mode though is a different matter altogether since only the speed of the main hand weapon is considered. Consequently, while using Dual Striking, a combo of a dagger in the main hand and a mace in the off hand, will attack at the same speed as two daggers. Because of this, the 'Rose's Thorn - Reaper's Cudgel' combo is among the very bests for Dual Striking in Origins, probably next only to the 'Rose's Thorn - Starfang' combo.

Aha...very interesting.

If I understood correctly, then you would equip a 1-hd sword in the off hand, while wielding a dagger in the main, right?

^Exactly. Longsword, Waraxe, or Mace in the off-hand.

Lol... after all these years I never even tried to equip a sword in the off hand. Still too much influence from AD&D, I guess  :D

The only good mace is a dead Mace, take it from Darth Sidious:

Well 2 Handers with mauls can generate automatic critical hits through talents so can Dual Wielders to a lesser extent and rogues can back stab with maces for extra damage even though daggers are much better for rogues that is to say that maces are not completely useless.

PC users have it much easier with mods and their high powered maces and extra mace related talents...
