I don't like the fact that dragons in Dragon Age aren't unambiguously intelligent (and I mean human+ levels of intelligent).  Non sapient dragons just get on my nerves.  They are just big winged lizards otherwise with no more particular interest than a big bear or an orca.   Making dragons more "realistic" is just silly.  Keep your sci-fi out of my fantasy, please.

This suggests that dragons may be more intelligent than most assume,so dont loose hope yet.^^

This is like asking for a friendly grizzly bear.  Dragons in Dragon Age are not sapient.  And they're usually hungry.

The Arch Demon is always a Dragon and always a dead god. So dragons can be sapient. Also the false Andraste had intelligence.

One thing that all these intelligent dragons have in common though is that they are all evil. I liked [Skyrim SPOILER] the friendly dragon in Skyrim [SPOILER END], but it might not fit here unless the Creator himself is a Dragon.

We don't know that the archdemons actually are dragons, just that they appear as dragons.

One could argue that they are DEFINITELY not, since no dragon is capable of shape shifting, yet if a non-Grey Warden slays the Archdemon, it's soul passes to the nearest Darkspawn and mutates it back into the dragon form.

So unless drakes (male dragons) magically manifest powers at very old ages that are completely outside the pattern seen by their younger versions, this would indicate an Archdemon is something else entirely.

There's something magical about dragon blood (cf. making reavers), so it might be that, say, a dragon abomination could do some interesting things when tainted.

But what sort of demon could possesses a dragon?

Perhaps the more pressing question.... what kind of demon would turn a High Dragon from female to male?

Presumably some really powerful form of Fade denizen re: the possession question.

As for the gender swap, well... we've seen abominations mutate the physical form of people before. Maybe possessed dragons get a little bit extra.

Yet how is an unknown Fade denizen that is much more powerful than a demon and which assumes the physical form of a dragon much different than what we understand the Old Gods to be?

I'm not suggesting the dragons are Fade spirits - just that a very powerful Fade spirit is possessing a dragon, which are in some way more magical than just your average Thedosian pleb (cf. what Yavanna says about them to Alistair).

Yet, if records before the fall of the Imperium can be believed, the beings we know as Archdemons were worshipped by and lived next to humans for millenia, yet did not actively seek to destroy the planet.

Granted, it could be the result of The Taint, but would that make them Tainted Abomination Dragons? If so... what does the Taint do to a demon anyway? Justice (or Vengeance) did not seem to be empowered or otherwise mutated by the Taint present in Anders blood as a former Grey Warden.

But compare Justice to the Faith spirit that was the +1 inside of Wynne: even when she did her equivalent of Anders' glow-y eyes of doom (Vessel of the Spirit), she was still much more in control of herself. So I would argue that the taint does have an effect. Recall, also, that Justice went full out bonkers in Legacy - which was under the influence of Corypheus. So I do think that the Taint has an effect on spirits. We also know from Avernus that the taint is "alien" to demons (and so spirits), and that it can be used as an effective weapon against them.

As for the Old Gods not destroying the word - well, Tevinter was basically a never-ending, always expanding evil empire. Massive slaughter, blood sacrifices, abuse, torture, death, etc. If demons get more sophisticated in their plots as they go up the totem pole of power, then it seems to be that creating a genocidal empire built on slavery is a pretty good Chessmaster-esque goal.

All the more reason to recruit the Messenger and the other Awakened to combat the demons pouring through the Fade Tear then  :P

But demons and spirits have their power tied to an individual's emotions, not an empire's exploits. Not do they play well with each other. I would doubt you'd get seven extremely powerful spirits to Abominate dragons and then just hang out in peace. That doesn't really jive with anything we've come to see from abominations or spirits in general.

Nope, a single Awakened darkspawn are still unequivocally worse than the entire set of Fade Tears. :P

Demons feed on one particular kind of emotion, but a demon of despair would seem to be exactly the kind of entity that would create a horrible oppressive empire.

Touché. Touché.

I keep forgetting that the new demons we're seeing aren't really new demons, but could have existed across the entire history of Thedas.

Intriguing.

Thank you. It's still a crackpot theory. Archdemons are probably some form of natural force/entity that goes beyond a spirit, but Bioware will keep it vague enough so that we can't be 100% sure they're gods in the D&D/Faerun sense of things.

I'll have to disagree with you there.

The Taint will corrupt and infect those near the Darkspawn; mitigated by avoiding direct contact, sharing the same items, etc. An Awakened ally is dangerous but only to those in continually direct contact with him, and then over a course of a period of time.

A Fade Tear can happen anywhere, the middle of your army camp, in your tent, while your going to the privy, anywhere. And once one happens you have an immediate portal that demons are going to come pouring through.

A portal to hell with no limitations on where it can appear > a singular entity that is only really dangerous if one is dealing directly with it, for prolonged periods of time. It's like comparing working with a faulty nuclear reactor a present radiation hazard, to running hapazardly through an active minefield.

[snip]

I didn't mean to start an off-topic debate - we've argued about this many times; I think you know my thoughts on the subject. :)

I though we were having an inside-joke moment on how many times we've argued this same point together.

A dragon companion in human shape like Flemeth would be nice.

And I hope the final boss of the main quest isn't again a dragon, who wants to destroy or enslave the world, like in 80 % of the RPGs in the last years.

i can see it now, bioware remakes "Pete's Dragon" and right as Helen Reddy(sp) begins to sing "Candle on the Water" Pete eats them all.  Especially the dude selling all the quackery... ...maybe cole isn't a demon but the spirit of Pete's Dragon in human form!!! that could explain all the invisibility and hi-jinks

That could work...

I heard from a angry joe E3 2014 interview the video is called if you want to know

Dragon Age Inquisition - Angry Interview E3 2014

they said there would be 20 high dragons to fight but they might think of adding more to the game.

Actually, before the Battle of Ostagarr in Origins, I remember either Duncan or Alistair (I think it was the latter) specifically saying "we don't know if Archdemons really are Old Gods, but there's no denying that they are dragons".

Perhaps the more pressing question.... what kind of demon would turn a High Dragon from female to male?

The Archdemon was always referred to as an "it" - chances are that it remained a female high dragon, but is now no longer even considered "draconic" by those who fight it due to the Taint corruption. It could also be that the taint removed all sexual functions from the dragon, which would make sense when you consider that Darkspawn are simply spawned from a Broodmother, therefore keeping it's form but removing it's gender.

Pluss they are allso powerfull because high dragons are powerfull to start with even affter death there power lasts as you see and exsperience in awakening and the taint mixed withe there power makes them even stronger as you see when fighting the archdeamon and when its power & tainted soul exsplode out the body after killing it.

In regards to gender it would not have one the taint gets rid of there ability to breed and  imagon a giant high dragon broodmother the normal ones are allready strong and freekishly ugly with more chins than a chines phone book. Imagon a dragon it would be biger stronger and uglyer than ever it would be a freeky sighte to see and a good fight.
