Had a thought after beating DA ][ today, that maybe the Elder One is an ancient dwarven mage. Maybe he/she did something to make the dwarves lose their magic abilities. Doubtful that this is the case but it would be different.

If its a sleeper; what if its the one you get in DAO?
What if destroying the crystal doesn't kill but simply freed it into the Fade?
And if you don't destroy it maybe after awakening it from its sleep it manages to contact help in the fade to help free itself?

Due to her age exceeding the Andraste-era and her mysterious agenda she's had all through out the series, my speculation is that it's Flemeth. But that's also because my metaphorical fingers have been crossed since we were told that we have a mysterious antagonist, that that "antagonist" is Flemeth.
Only three months to go until we find out who "The Elder One" is, for certain!
Possibly Less, I can't remember the last time a Bioware release didn't get the story leaked a few weeks early.

I have 3 guesses;
1) Greater Pride Demon controlling and giving Alexius&friends the power to cause the damage that they have done.
2) An ancient Tevinter Magister.
3) The primary antagonist of the game.
Could be wrong on all fronts but hey, if we knew the answer I'd be really disappointed. Spoilers are bad!

If we're going by the Chantry mythos, "Elder One" could be referring to one of the first spirits created by the Maker. Maybe some sort of primal, super demon.
