I just did Jack's recruitment mission and decided to try out a concept. I often have trouble with the second heavy mech we meet so I decided I would try to use the Cain on the wall behind it before it became active. Much to my surprise, the Cain killed it outright. From my previous experience the Cain has never been that deadly against heavy mechs. Usually, it takes down their shields and half their armor. So I am curious if there is some kind of "splash back" effect where a wall will redirect the energy that would have spread out away from the impact point back towards the shooter. I noticed that the Cain fired at the wall behind the Prime on Tali's mission does a great job of killing off all those Geth there in one shot as well.

I know I used the cain that destroys the 3 heavy mechs with one shot when getting the 20 crates. All I do is aim at the ground near the closest heavy mech and boom

Enemies continuously gain health as you level up.  This is countered by better powers, weapon/power upgrades, and specific bonuses like cooldown improvements and special properties for weapons.

But none of those apply to Heavy Weapons.

This means you can do what TheMikeFest said and destroy all 3 Heavy Mechs with a single Cain shot if you do it at low level...but do it at max level and it'll probably take it to maybe half health (meaning all health plus half armor) if you're lucky.

I'm not sure. What I do know is that the Cain is permanently strapped to my ME2 Sheps, even when there is no plan to use it. It also sometimes one-shots Praetorians, but not reliably.

Hmm.. don't know.  Perhaps you could test by Caining the YMIR it after it starts marching toward you, see if that makes a difference.
