Why?

Shepard doesn't react to it at all. You think he would react to the head Reaper taking on the kids form.

Plus, it would leave the big question of how the Catalyst found out about it; like, can it read minds?

Post-Synthesis, the Catalyst will comment to Harbinger about Shepard's lack of reactivity about it trying to mess with his/her head by taking on the form of the kid from the dreams.

Catalyst: Didn't even notice. Shepard just stood there, and not a word about it.

Harbinger: What a tool.

Aren't there more important things going on than stopping everything and asking why it looks exactly like the kid?

Probably, since the asari, Protheans, and Leviathans all can in different ways.

That seems like a poor handwave. This kid's death was very emotionally traumatizing for Shepard, for him to say nothing about it or even react; especially after being woken up. Wouldn't he wonder if he was in dream or something? Plus, Shepard never really seems to be in a particular hurry during the Catalyst conversation.

I find it more likely that the writers were going for that trope where the alien something takes on the form of a child to explain things and BioWare in usual BioWare fashion reused the character model that they had.

This is kind of like Eleanor Arroway's encounter with the being in Contact, where instead of getting to see what the alien looks like, it's just an interface that uses the image of her dead father as well as imagery derived from her childhood drawings. If Ellie just started asking questions about the method of travel or about other life out there without commenting on the fact that it clearly used her memories to construct this environment, it would have been pretty weird. Granted, the aliens are not trying to kill everyone, so there's no urgency involved, but such an uncanny thing would not go unnoticed, and does warrant inquiry.

Wouldn't say emotionally traumatizing, exactly. But yes, the child sticks in his/her mind as an embodiment of innocent death on Earth and elsewhere. There are still more important things going on, though, and I picked up on some haste from Shepard once they start chatting about the war itself. I wouldn't mind the option to inquire about it, sure, but how far do you want to take the trust in that conversation with the Reaper overlord?

I find it more likely that the writers were going for that trope where the alien something takes on the form of a child to explain things and BioWare in usual BioWare fashion reused the character model that they had.

I've been looking for a quote from a panel to no avail, but BioWare actually addressed the reason why the Catalyst looks like the kid (symbolism), and it's in the affirmative. The game starts and finishes with the child in those clothes, after all.

The real answer to the reason Shepard doesn't comment on the kid is that Shepard is a dumb ass.

Well, I didn't react to it. I had more important things to worry about: bigger things about which to ask WTF was going on.

That it can read Shepard's mind is really the only plausible explanation. That or he watched the whole exchange on Earth through a Reaper or something.

The Catalyst kid is winking in hopes that Shepard will realize it was the kid on Earth.

I don't recall what Arroway says. But if it clearly used her memories, and she knows that's what's going on, then for whose benefit does she remark about it? The alien already knows what's going on, and so does she.

It's for the slower members of the audience, right?

Edit: The problem I have with the Catalyst scene is that, unlike Contact, the meaning of the Catalyst's form is only apparent once you're well into the conversation.

Shepard doesn't ask because he knows BW were on a deadline.

I wouldn't go that far.

Well, they're both self-indulgent conclusions to a science fiction trilogy that ended up going totally nonsensical by the end with heavy-handed messianic allegory, "bittersweetness",  and space magic (or its cyberpunk equivalent).

Complete with an enemy that "cannot be beaten conventionally"

There is another Mass Effect game being worked on.  It will not be called Mass Effect 4 though.

It will not have Shepard in it,  It is unknown to what degree our decisions will impact it, or even if they will at all.

Personally, I'm hoping not.

I would like to continue with shepard, that ending where he lives, left many questions he is the hero of mass effect, I do not like that change

Scorched Earth is acceptable?

So, you're the player and there's an H5N1 outbreak in New York. The solution dreamt up in Geneva is that we need to prevent it spreading beyond the US borders, howver the people of the US don't like that idea and are struggling to escape. So to save the planet, you nuke the US. Youve destroyed the H5N1 outbreak threatening the planet, at the expense of the US, saving the French, Brits (thanks by the way), Germans, Africans, Russiansetc.. basically everyone else. Still OK?

How is this a good thing? If anything, we should nuke Russia and find a non-nuclear solution to the H5N1 outbreak. That way everyone (who matters) wins.
