This question goes out to anyone planning to make an Elven Inquisitor, as well as any BioWare employee who happens to see this!

So I've picked out my names for all my playthroughs- Humans, Dwarves, and Qunari. However I have 4 Elven playthroughs planned and I just can't think of any names for them :(

I want something that's appropriate for the time setting Dragon Age somewhat replicates (medieval) yet Elf-y as well. I didn't have a problem in Origins because most of the time I took the default first names for all the Elven Wardens (Alim, Darrian, Kaillen, Lyna, etc.)

Was wondering how you guys figure out your names? I want it to be more than simply picking similar names to Elves we've encountered in previous games, or simply adding letters to create something that sounds Elf-y. I enjoy meaning to my names.

For reference, I have 2 male and 2 female Elves planned.

EDIT: Thank you all for your great responses. I have figured out the names for all 4 of my Elven Inquisitors :)

Females: Silvia, Taiah

Males: Gideon, Ignatius

I name them using the alphabet and occasionally punctuation marks.

The back pages of the Silmarillion. My elf in DA:O was a city elf named Elran, dalish was... Taurgil? I forget, I never finished the dalish playthrough.

Either I keep the default name, or resort to Tolkien when concerning elves.

Apostrophes!  Dane'l, Ly'Sedra, K'talis.  Apostrophes make it all better!

Not really digging apostrophes or naming them after foods lol. Any other suggestions?

I either go with the default or I think my elf's parents wanted to be different and named him/her with a human name just to make them stand out.  After all, how many elves out their are named Jason, John, or Jane, their just so exotic.

They said they won't be doing default first names anymore.

Also, our Inquisitor is always Dalish. So human names aren't really applicable.

Usually I use Tolkienesque names (plenty of Sindarin/Middle Earth elven dictionaries). My Dalish Warden was named Tinuwen while my Elf Mage was Arwen.

For Inquisition my male Lavellan will be called Rothruin (Fiery Redhead) and my female Lavellan Calathil (Moonlight).

Given elves don't seem to have naming conventions in Dragon Age (many have Celtic/English names, but so do many DA humans), I figure it at least differentiates them.

Interesting. I'll look up these dictionaries.

That is what makes them so exotic.  Dalish go out of their way to avoid humans and their settlements so naming a dalish after a human would make them stand out within the clan because it would be a name they rarely ever heard or used.  I didn't say it would be popular, but my elf's parents always wanted to be different.

Double letters included, as in Llandon, Llauryn, or Llamron; have used all of these since playing PnP games. FYI - The latter one was an Elven F/MU/C/T; 'Normal' reversed and Elven'd up as appropriate.

This could help if you want to stick more with the lore and not branch off to other elf languages.

Since elves are Gaelic I tend to gravitate towards those type of names.

Considering Mahariel's tribe speaks with Welsh accents you could name a character using Cymraeg. So like David would be Dewi'ggyedwaaii... which is pronounced as Stephen.

In DAO I mostly just tended to insert an extra syllable into the preset names.

The last time I played an elf I named it Rhavanniel-female, and Aearion-male or I used Gaelic/Celtic sounding names.

I also sometimes use this site http://www.arwen-und.../girlnames.html and just change the word girl to boy, as they have a selection of both.

Thanks! From this list I've gotten some potential names to consider for females;

Lydia- fire brand

Silvia- girl of the forest (PERFECT)

Taliah- morning dew (wasn't this in DA:2? the servant to lady De'Mounce? i totally butchered that spelling)

Taiah- beautifully created

I usually do what it seems everyone else does--find a Tolkien-esque name or use one of Irish/Gaelic/Celtic/English variety
