Omg, have you guys forgotten about Corypheus, the ancient darkspawn magister in DA2 Legacy.....    Darkspawn is still a huge threat in DAI.....

Who knows, maybe it's Corypheus that cause this chaos that's going on right now in DAI.

The darkspawn are never going to stop being part of the franchise, but we already had lots of content devoted to them. If every game was focused around stopping a Blight, it'd get old really fast.

I really loathed the darkspawn. They sort of got better and worse in DA:A, but otherwise I'm happy if they're never a major feature of a DA game again.

Why?

They seem like the DA version of the geth.  Always a part of the universe and there will always be some to fight but they won't always be the main baddies that they were in the first game just like the geth.

Why?

Why do I loathe the darkspawn, or why do I wish they never featured?

No. However, I found the darkspawn to be rather bland, too much like the orc hordes from LoTR etc. Not to mention the darkspawn didn't have like...any motives behind their marches and stuff.

The only time I really liked the darkspawn and was intrigued by them was during Awakening, with the whole Architect and Mother story arc. I like my villains to have emotions, motives, and not be so one dimensional.

I wonder if there was at least one female magister amongst the magisters that entered the gold/black city.  I'm thinking if that is the case that she would not be a brood mother like normal women and she reproduced with one of the magister darkspawn and the architect was the result of that union.

Honestly, I'd love to get away from the Darkspawn for a while. Mainly because it's so heavily reliant on the "corruption" plot element, which Bioware's been beating to death in spades for the last few games. If that weren't enough in DAO you have demons (which do the same thing) and now Red Lyrium (which does the same thing again).

Both.

Just a theory but I believe the Darkspawn are in just as much danger from the breach as mortals. Demons are not picky who or what they destroy.

Not completely. Demons seem to fear and avoid darkspawn, for the most part; the darkspawn taint is something they can't understand, and we've never seen or heard of an emissary becoming an abomination.

Who knows, maybe the Arcitect or his Disciples(since they exist regardless) offer themselves as a powerful weapon against the demons.

I actually liked the Darkspawn. Villains today always have these vast moral Dilemmas behind them, most of the Times a Cause it is reasonably understandable to get behind and an integral Conflict that affects the Protagonist personally. See Meredith/Orsino, see Loghain, see every other Person in today's Media. Even the forking Reapers had a Reason, as stupidly contrived as it is.

The Darkspawn doesn't. It is capital E EVIL and that is great.

I wouldn't call the darkspawn evil. They're not intelligent enough for it and they don't possess sufficient free will; basically, if a being can't choose not to be destructive, I don't think it's fair to call it evil. When darkspawn do gain free will, many of them are evil, but not all.

Free Will isn't required to do evil. There are some Things that make you evil when you do them and the Darkspawn do many of these Things. Senseless and needless killing for Example. The Conversion Process of Broodmothers.

The Darkspawn are somewhat immortal, given they do not contract Diseases, do not die natural Deaths, do not even have to eat or sleep or drink. They thus have no Justification about Reproduction or Survival. They do these Things without Reason and that makes them evil. It doesn't matter if they want to or not.

Really? Would you call tornadoes evil for doing many similar things? What about wildfires? Earthquakes?

Yes, those are evil Things. I wouldn't call them good.

But, if it soothes your Mind and to stop squabbling about the Definition of "Evil", we can say "The Darkspawn = the Archdemon".

The archdemons seem to be driven insane by the taint as well, so I'm not even wholly sure they count... maybe we'll learn in a later game.

It isn't defending them; its like calling an animal with rabies evil.

Non-benign and destructive are not in of themselves "evil" things.

There needs to be some aspect of sentience for something to be evil, a rock that falls of a mountain and crushes someone's skull sin't evil.  It simply is.

Regardless of the negative impacts of its existence on the person it landed on.

That being said; the darkspawn do enjoy hurting others and do so in ways that require the knowledge of at least basic technology.  Ropes for hanging, making knots, they can forge weapons and armor or piece them together from off the battlefield.

They are known for ambushes and some basic aspects of technology; though the Archdemon helps out at that point.  And some non-awakened can even talk.

Off-hand going back to my earlier statement, its probably reasonable to put darkspawn intelligence somewhere between ape-8yr old child for general variation.  Obviously with ape being fantastically more common than the ones that can talk or forge items and tools.

Of course; they can live for fantastically long times and if the Taint works somewhat like dragons-blood it may give them a source of "knowledge" that works more like instinct than true awareness.

I'd like to have Awakened Darkspawn as agents of the Inquisition. They can't stay in the Keeps for quarantine reasons, but it would be cool to see them fight Red Templars or Demons or whatever with my party.

I'm going for an always chaotic evil race for the Darkspawn. They show signs of intelligence and are only 'born' of the humanoid races that we know are intelligent and have free will. After the archdemon is defeated, they return to the underdark, but they spend their time raiding and killing on a small scale instead of a large one.

That's the thing about the Darkspawn when there's no Blight there's almost no Darkspawn on the surface and certainly not more than a small group.

There are few darkspawn on the surface compared to a Blight, but still a lot, especially in areas that are heavily blighted.

Whether it is considered evil or not doesn't matter. The blight is an anti-life, it destroys life around it, feeds off it, twists it, and in all cases should be shown no tolerance. I thought the awakened darkspawn were interesting, and the choices to side with some and be friendly-ish with them interesting, but they all do need to be wiped out, and when they are, then the Wardens as well. The blight/taint is the clearest threat and the easiest one to make a decision on.

I would like another dlc or something involving the darkspawn, although the fight with the Wardens in Inquisition may involve information on the blight or Corypheus. I don't think they are boring at all, but I would like to see more of Thedas.
