Something's been bugging me about Qunari and their place in the DA universe.

If Qunari aren't a race, but are in fact, people who merely follow the Qun-which is basically a religion-then....

What do you label all the gigantic horned humanoids running around Thedas??

Yeah, I get that they're the originators of the religion but clearly they belong to a specific race.  What do you call the race?  Am I missing something here?  Did I miss a piece of information in the lore somewhere?  I've played both DA: Origins and DA 2 and all of the DLC to death and....this seems like a massive oversight to me. Maybe I should have read the books?

Well, I guess....that explains that.  Even though the official wikia doesn't outright say that's the name of their race.   Well, I am officially calling them Kossith from now on.  Calling them and the Inquisitor I'm going to play as Qunari seems like a misnomer.

Qunari is a sort of blanket term for both the religion and the race of horned people. I believe way back in the day they were called Kossith but now you just call them all Qunari.

Kossith is an antiquated term for their culture before the Qun that the devs have said wouldn't even be recognized by most people in Thedas, so I don't think it's super accurate.

That being said, using qunari or kossith on the message boards gets your point across. I guess it just depends on your comfort using a word that can have two meanings. For me, I can always figure out if people mean the race or religion, but I guess it's confusing for other people.

I doubt the Qunari even know their own race name, and simply go by Qunari. And those who don't go by Tal/vashoth.

Kossith seems to be the term.

Kossith is an ancient term.  Kinda like elvhen for the elves.

"Qunari" is a term both for the race and the followers of the Qun.  I just use lower-case q for teh race, since that's what we do with elves, dwarves, and humans.  Upper case Q for the religion, like we do with Andrastrian or Dalish

Or you could call them giants.  Or oxmen, though that's kinda like calling an elf a knife-ear.

I believe calling them Kossith nowadays is considered an insult :L

Biologically, they are Kossith. Racially, they call themselves and are referred to as Qunari.

Don't worry honey, I find it just as confusing as you do.

EDIT: I just call them "grey giants" because I'm so sick of people correcting me when I try to use a term to differentiate biological race from culture/religion, and having to make long sentences clarifying what I mean when I use the term "Qunari" in a sentence.

Kossith.

People will complain about your terminology, but it's a word that lets everyone know that you're NOT talking about the culture or the philosophy. If you use the term qunari, then you need to spend at least a sentence explaining in detail that you're talking about the species.

Context doesn't matter. Someone will read the word qunari and think you mean followers of the Qun.

To me it seems like BW isn't going to use Kossith anymore and qunari is used both as religion and as race. Qunaris outside of the Qun are called Tal-Vashoth or Vashoth (I think the difference between these is that Tal-Vashoths actively oppose Qun).

You call them Qunari.

David Gaider has addressed this in the past, the whole "Kossith or Qunari" debate only serves to confuse people and/or make people feel smug about their superior terminology. The Kossith term is antiquated and will never ever be used in the games, so just call them Qunari.

Qunari is the word you're going to see or hear most of the time for the race (including at character creation, last I heard), and most of the time it will also be true that they're religiously Qunari. Only occasionally Tal Vashoth will get indignant (though Tal Vashoth aren't usually much for talking to begin with) and then you have the other races who convert to the Qun but aren't racially Qunari.

With the race constantly being referred to as Qunari by the developers I see no reason to call them something else. And if someone happens to get confused because of context there is no need to change the name of the race. It is like continuing to call Asians something like Orientals. It absolutely doesn't make it less confusing but it is insulting to boot.

That argument would hold weight if there happened to be a religion called "Asianism" and the people who followed said religion were called Asians.  I just think there needs to be a differentiation between the religion and the race.  I think it would be way more interesting if the race was less intertwined with the religion, but that's just me.  I'm not the loremaster so I have no say in such matters.
