Apparently in DA:I over-hunting animals will effect the environment, how frequently they show up and the like. My question with dragons is what impact could they have due to this? Or are they seperate from that system and are more like bonus boss enemies?

It'd be funny if overhunting the dragons actually improves the local environment. If so, I will gladly hunt every dragon out there.

I believe they said there were 20 dragon fights. So I doubt they respawn at all.

I thought they said that the dragons were the top predator in any area so if you remove them, this allows other species to thrive both those they prey on and those who were in direct competition for their food source. For example, in Great Britain there are no longer any wolves to prey on the deer, so if their numbers are not controlled by humans then they increase to the point were there is not enough food and they starve to death. A dragon in an area may forced out lesser predators who move into areas of human habitation and prey on domestic animals or the dragon may do so itself. Removing the dragon may allow human settlements to flourish and take over areas that were previously wilderness. There are any number of ways that a dragon could impact on the environment and killing it could likewise do so for good or ill.

Hunting dragons may lead to an increase in other creatures in the area.
I think that they're meant to be more like bonus bosses though.

I suspect that it'll have some kind of positive effect, new animals that Dragons used to kill coming back into the area, something like that. It doesn't seem likely there'd be effects for killing every possible animal 'except' the biggest of the all, now does it
?

In addition to allowing different animals to populate a region (possibly acting as a "reset button" if you, say, dramatically reduced bears in a dragon-controlled area for their hides), it's possible that killing a dragon might, as other people have said, unlock access to a "bonus dungeon" of sorts, like a cave that has cool loot in it or somesuch. I doubt the devs would put something of vital importance behind a dragon, but probably just something neat and extra-- like the cool loot the high dragon dropped in DAO, which you didn't technically *have* to fight.

Given that the one dragon battle we've really seen (alright, we did see lots of the desert dragon, but that was a year ago) we don't actually kill the dragon. She just retreats and new areas open up, I see dragons being multi-stage fights. First time we seem 'em we just drive em off, then really late in the game we can kill them. So it probably won't have much impact since the game will probably be almost over by the time we get around to actually slaying them.

I don't think killing the dragons would impact the environment negatively. It will definitely impact our reputation though. And maybe the interior of our fortress. Can't let those skulls go to waste.

Oooh, good point. Perhaps they'd also be a source for dragonskin and dragonbone for crafting things?
Speaking of, I would pay tons of money to see Wade show up again. I love that guy.

I certainly hope there will be a material reward of some sort for hunting them down. Bragging rights only go so far.

Probably the area is safer and more accessible. That's it.

Maybe some areas will improve, others will worsen. It could vary on what that High Dragon was doing before you killed it.

Actually, in the video shown at the Xbox stage at SDCC (playing as a rogue), the guy actually DOES kill the dragon.
This has me mildly worried that they'll be defeat-able too soon, rather than enemies that absolutely will kick your tail if played before the endgame.

The devs did say the game will allow you to take on the dragons at any point.I imagine a low leveled player would get demolished if they ran into a dragon without some serious preparation.

Which makes me wonder what level the party is at in that video.

I believe Mike Laidlaw at one of the conventions said that dragons drop Endgame-level stuff if you manage to defeat them.

I felt sorry for the dragon in the E3 demo ![]()
Kind of hope that we can abstain from killing them without it detrimentally affecting our game.

If you do a full run through without killing any dragons you get to ride them in new game plus. Gaider told me

I will do it regardless (those things are dangerous to local people, dangerous to my troops and interesets - and they make very good armor/decoration, too ^^)
greetings LAX
ps: and I bet killing them gives a lot of XP, too
(maybe you'll find hoards near them, too?
)

The demo was obviously on god-mode. You see a few points where character health spontaneously refills.
