Where are the cities? Val Royeaux?

Hi! I'm wondering - why haven't we seen anything in terms of major cities yet? OK, Redcliffe village is in the E3 footage, but it doesn't seem that big. What about Val Royeaux, the supposedly most important city in Thedas? What about the Grand temple?

I just hope that they don't destroy it in the opening cinematic because the engine wouldn't be able to handle it. The fade rift killed thousands according to Cassandra... hope this doesn't mean downtown Val Royeaux is ground zero!

It somehow all fits together, however - Why would so many "lead figures" like Leliane, Cassandra and Vivienne join the Inquisition? Maybe because their respective organisations (Circle, Seekers) are shattered?

Why would all nobles gather at the Winter Palace in Halamshiral instead of the capital? Is it a convenient excuse to "save" important political figures from the destruction of Val Royeaux?

Perhaps you should consider cutting down on the caffeine?

(just kidding)

Most likely, they have not shown any major cities and stuff because they want to keep it for closer to release. Or maybe they won't show it at all before release.

This should not be any cause for concern. Everything will be fine.

The opening of the game takes place at the Temple of Andraste's Sacred Ashes in the Frostback Mountains. There the Chantry and the heads of the mage 'resistance', for lack of a better term, are negotiating peace terms. Supposedly the explosion that opens the Breach kills the head figures of the Chantry at that location, so meaning the White Divine and the Lord Seeker would perish there, along with a whole lot of others.

As for the cities in the game... the devs have stated, even though I can't find a source for you right now, that this game focuses less on urban areas and more on the 'open' regions in Thedas. Like the Dales, the Hinterlands, the Western Approach etc. That's not to say we won't visit Val Royeaux as a hub-like area, but don't expect a whole lot more. This probably because DA2 had such a heavy focus on urban areas.

Halamshiral in the Dales is a confirmed location, though i don't know if the whole city will be included (I personally doubt it).

Yeah Halamshiral was confirmed, but the announcement only came with pictures of the Winter Palace's interior, leading many to believe the city itself wouldn't actually be in the game like Denerim was in Origins, or Kirkwall in DA2.

If Val Royeaux is not in the game I doubt it is because of engine limitations but more about Bioware simply not wanting to spend resources on creating a city instead on focusing on giving us a bigger world.

I am of the believe there is a pretty good chance Val Royeaux won't be in the game. Didn't they conveniently close off the gates to the city in the last book?

I would love for the capital city to be in the game but I am getting increasingly more doubtful it will happen.

Well with all that is going on in Val Royeaux, I would be surprised if we ended up going there.

There's an outside market shor as well.

I kind of hope they dont show Val Royeaux prior to release I'd love that city to be a surprise in game. (I do however really hope it actually is in the game)

Do we have confirmation that this is Halamshiral, though? Could very well be Val Royeaux from the looks of it, but I don't think anything about that screenshot has been said by any devs.

If the world in DA:I is as big as Bioware have suggested then they've only revealed a fraction of the locations that we'll visit. That said, I'm not sure how much of Val Royeaux we'll see. Celene is currently in her Winter Palace so unless we are going to help her or Gaspard take over the city I can't think of a reason to go there.

I just know I'd really be disappointed if we didn't have at least on major urban area to explore- which (bioware) RPG didn't?

And if they create a city, I can't imagine it would be anything else than Val Royeaux.

The pictures in question show a very formally organized, symmetrical complex around a courtyard; it looks very palatial and you can recognize one end of what is clearly some kind of formal palatial entranceway that's on another picture. Moreover, the Halamshiral piece on the game's official site says

Middle Eastern styles also influenced the building of this place.

If you look here (0:52):

You can see the same gold, blue and creamy and / or marble white you see in the Halamshiral interiors, but here are also the vaguely Middle Eastern style spires. This is Halamshiral Palace alright.

It's still possible there's going to be one or more cities in DA:I, but given the fact that the game's out in less than three months, I wouldn't bet on it.

Do you really want that spoiled? Dont you want to see these marvelous looking cities in there full glory for the first time while playing? Rather than have that awe taken away by a internet video?

I sure don't want to be spoilered too much, but it's strange that all things that were already "spoilered" so far didn't contain anything from any densely poplulated area.

Sure, they might hold stuff back to keep the hype going until fall, but I doubt cities are the strong point of DA3.

If you check out the E3 demo of the biggest RPG competitor on youtube, you'll see how nextgen urban areas can look like.

I'd post a link, but considering this is the official Bioware forum, I doubt I'll make myself popular by doing so.

I wouldn't expect too many large cities (no more than 3) to be in the game. BioWare has a habit of having 1 large city and making it the main social hub, and the most densely populated area.

You will see a nice amount of outposts, villages, and towns though, I'm pretty sure of that.

So far, there's a decent chance we'll be able to visit Halamshiral, but equally decent a chance our visit will be restricted to the Winter Palace.

In Asunder, the gates of Val Royeaux are closed.  In Masked Empire, the major players, Celene and Gaspard, are conveniently cut off from the capitol.  I don't hold out much hope for the whole city's inclusion.  We might be able to visit distinct locations within the city (Like the Grand Cathedral) but I'm not optimistic.

Its a bit disappointing, I've wanted to visit Val Royeaux ever since Leliana described it in Origins.

That's what DLC is for.

Check your enthusiasm.  I'd wait for confirmation before assuming this is anything other than an elaborate courtyard in the Winter Palace. (I hope its the city)

Hope so, though I what I want most from DLC is a Cassandra-centric expansion set in Nevarra during a succession crisis.

I don't care what this is, city square or palace courtyard, it looks like gorgeous. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't show this pic if it didn't exist in the game.

Oh, I think we'll visit this place for sure. And it does look really nice, though you probably need a decent PC or PS4 to really enjoy it in a form close to this picture.

Only problem I have with it is the stylistic difference between what we see here - a mix of late medieval / Renaissance palace bits with a bit of Oriental fantasy thrown in - and the interior, which has more of a 1700-1900 'Versailles meets North American robber baron mansion' vibe.

I like both in their way, but not the combination.

Maybe we will have cities in DAIV. Perhaps...
