There may have already been a thread on this but are Mages=Templars?
Edit: Also, how is it Lyrium can exist outside the fade? And without lyrium can there still be connections to the fade or mages?

Lyrium grows in the ground and is mined by the dwarves. It is essentially magic as a raw ore, and is excessively dangerous to any non-dwarf to even approach before it is refined.
Templars drink refined lyrium and they use it while it's in their system to negate spells and mana, essentially they are using spells from the school of spirit under another name, but are otherwise incapable of using magic or templar talents period without it. I know Alistair doubts it, but the lead writer has retconned it so templar talents now absolutely require lyrium.
Think of lyrium as an ore with a connection to the fade, and can be used by mages to amplify the power of their spells, or is used as a power source for various magical rituals.
The difference between mages and templars is that mages don't need lyrium to access the powers of the fade.

Could you provide a cite or link to said retconning (the bit I bolded)? I'm not questioning whether 'tis so, rather, it is material to something I'm writing. Thanks! ![]()

No problem!
It's in the Dragon Age Comics, where Alistair is questing with Varic and Isabella to find Maric (which they do,) and he starts taking lyrium againto use templar abilities again.
Also, he mentions it in this interview.

Right. To follow up on dragonflight's post, Alistair originally said in DAO that only Templars that have taken their vows get to drink lyrium, and he never actually took his vows. We were also told that lyrium wasn't necessarily needed but rather amplified Templar talents.
1) Alistair says that Templars only receive lyrium when they take their vows.
2) Alistair says he has never taken his vows, therefore he has never ingested lyrium (he even says he never has IIRC).
3) Alistair is able to be a Templar
4) Duncan recruited him partially for his Templar abilities, something Alistair will tell you.
5) Alistair can teach this to a Warrior Warden, who has also never ingested lyrium.
They did indeed retcon it, regrettably, as the comics show us. It was always their intention to have lyrium be required for Templar talents but couldn't get it working right for DAO IIRC. And then they added a bunch of other stuff that... if they were going to keep to the lyrium is necessary thing, make you wonder why they added that stuff in the first place.
Now, the only thing I can really assume leads to the Warden and Alistair using Templar talents is that the Joining has a bit of lyrium thrown in as well. I believe this was in fact stated somewhere, either in-game or (more then likely) out-game.

It was said (in Origins) when they discussed what's in the cup, darkspawn blood, archdemon blood, lyrium and some other stuff. I'm assuming herbs as well, but that's just my personal assumption. At one point in a convo with (I think Alistair or maybe Riordan) it's mentioned some of the ingredients you lack to do more Joinings.
A pity they retconned it since Warrior Wardens AND Hawke's can be templars without the lyrium. Fenris has a bastardized version of the spec he can do because of the lyrium tattoos.
Yeah ... considering that Alistair flat out says that he's never taken lyrium and doesn't really have a reason to lie about it I'm not quite sure what the purpose of this retcon is either ... especially since all they would have had to done is show Alistair take a swig from his "lyrium flask" one time in a cut-scene and have the rest be handled off screen ... same with a Templar Hawke.
*sighs* I'm really going to have to stop reading anything Gaidar says and just stick with playing the games themselves.
