Thanks to the Masked Empire, we now know how powerful these mirrors can be.
What did the book reveal about the Eluvians?

I don't imagine it will get much use.
Who wants to intentionally go to Kirkwall anyway? ![]()

They remind me of The Ways from The Wheel of Time. Much like 'The Game' reminded me of Daes Dae'mar.

Been fascinated by the Eluvians since they were first revealed in Origins. They reminded me somewhat of Lord of the Rings Palantirs, though now we know how they function means they are rather different. My Hawke's always try and help Merrill restore her Eluvian so i'd certainly like it to come back up or at least get a chance to explore the wider Eluvian Network in the game.

If it does come up, it had best not backbite anyone...

Of course not. Something that obvious bites you in the throat. From the front.
Edit:
More seriously, I can see it working for better and for worse.
On the plus side, elven refugees flee Orlais to the relative safety of Kirkwall.
On the negative side, the influx of elven refugees leads to worse conditions for the city elves.
On the plus side, Briala tries to use her mirrors to spread her activities and influence outside of Orlais.
On the negative side, Briala's activities prompt a crackdown that ensnares many innocent elves along with the guilty.

The Eluvians have always been a mysterious artefact in Thedas, its true power on hinted at in Witch Hunt and DA 2. Thanks to the Masked Empire, we now know how powerful these mirrors can be. My question is what role, if any will the one Merrill created in DA 2? I romanced her and kept the mirror intact. Will this come back to haunt me?
Merrill's self-constructed Eluvian remained inert, so I don't imagine it will. I do think the potential importance of the Eluvians will have some clans see Merrill in a different light than Marethari did, and perhaps seek her out given the amount of time and effort she put into studying the lore and extrapolating information from the shard she acquired from the Elven Ruins.

Merrill's eluvian was just a piece but even if she got it working I'm not sure that it would link into the main network. Tamlen could see some sort of city through it and Duncan maintained it had belonged to Tevinter. I'm wondering if it wasn't a true elven eluvian at all but rather a Tevinter attempt to copy the technology. Alternatively, perhaps it was focussed on Arlathan and can only be awakened from that end.

I don't think the Eluvians are inherently dangerous. Merrill's folly was not so much in tinkering with the Eluvian as it was making deals with a demon in order to try to get it to work. Also blood magic.

No one in the story said Merrill brokered a deal with Audacity, not even Marethari.

Even assuming she built it correctly, there's no guarantee that Merrill's mirror actually connected to anything. It might be the finest Eluvian ever constructed, but if it's not on the network, it's just a fancy mirror.

Well, now that Briala turned the network back on, maybe it has begun to work. Or, perhaps, moving it from its original location disconnected it from the network. However, Laidlaw mentioned that it was not "a good idea" to have kept the mirror, so I don't think its story is necessarily over yet.

Lol, like spilling out a crap ton of demons? I always had the gut feeling that there was still something alive within that in-between world, something we never saw.

Maybe something to do with why the ancient elves turned off a perfectly good human trap.

Indeed...I had begun to theorize that perhaps they turned off the network to trap something in that between world.

She'll go through it only to stumble on the Warden in the act of smashing Morrigan or vice versa.

I've always wanted a blooper for DA2 in which the scene of Merrill being frustrated by the Eluvian not working would be accompanied by both a Blue Screen of Death and the dialup modem sound.
After all, no one has patched the Eluvians for who knows how longs. There's got to be maintenance issues after so many years.

Clearly the Eluvians are actually the Mass Effect Relays of Thedas, and were not created by the elves as previously believed...
