No one in the story said Merrill brokered a deal with Audacity, not even Marethari.

Merriill struck a deal with Audacity before meeting Hawke. It was Audacity who tought her blood magic to purge the mirror of the darkspawn taint. She also planned on bargaining with Audacity on her return to Sundermount, as she warns Hawke that he (or she) might have to slay her, should Audacity succeed in possessing her.

Audacity played Merrill like a fiddle. Had it not been for Marethari's intervention, she would have ended up possessed. That being said, Marethari made a colossal blunder as well, although it was one that potentially saved Merrill. That whole clan was epic level stupid.

if that damned mirror was so important to her she'd be better off robbing/ripping off the Carta of one of it's lyrium shipments. Dalish are so unimaginative.

No one says Merrill struck any deal. Merrill learned blood magic from Audacity, but no one says a bargain was made, and we know that the spirit was sundered from the Fade (the Beyond) and bound to a statute for over a millennia. Merrill says she wanted to speak with Audacity, but she also tells an aggressive Hawke that she wouldn't release the spirit, and even Marethari never says anything contrary to this. Even Marethari says that she believes Audacity would have escaped through the restored Eluvian, not because of any alleged bargain.

Nope. "Deal" implies she offered something in exchange to Audacity. She did no such thing. Granted, asking for help from demons is pretty damn stupid, but she didn't offer anything in return for the help she received.

I hope there'll be a quest where we teleport to Merrill eluvian, only to find out she's been possessed.

By what, though? Eluvians don't lead to the Fade. However, if there was indeed something stuck in that world, I could see it trying to possibly possess Merrill.

Considering Merrill decides to pursue other avenues of interest after the Keeper's death, and might be an outlaw with a romanced Champion who opposed Meredith, I'd find that to be unlikely.

^Perhaps. However, I feel like the blood magic is going to catch up to her eventually.

Blood magic isn't inherently evil, so I don't see why it would.

Yup. Gaider himself said the most dangerous thing about blood magic is the temptation to misuse it.

She planned on it on that return trip to Sundermount. Otherwise she would have been in no danger of possession, and she warns Hawke that her quest to fix the mirror once and for all might end with Audacity turning her into an abomination. She was obviously planning on taking some risks to get the Eluvian working. That she doesn't have to face the possible consequences of those risks is only because Marethari foolishly intervenes.

Demons never give anything freely. If Merrill didn't have to cut a deal with the demon the first time, it was only because it was playing the long game and buttering her up for a later downfall. In either case, Audacity was playing Merrill like a fiddle. She thought she needed it to get the Eluvian to work, which is precisely what Audacity wanted.

I meant that demonic possession is a hell of a lot more likely to be an issue the more she uses BM. It has nothing to do with the morality behind that magic.

Merrill expresses concern that Audacity might not be bound to the statute anymore in Act III, and I thought it was intelligent to take a precaution in case the spirit was no longer imprisoned.

And I perceive Marethari's decision to release Audacity as an example of the Keeper doing precisely what the spirit wanted, since she did so because she thought Audacity would escape through the restored Eluvian (in contradiction to her previous opposition to Merrill's efforts to construct the Eluvian due to the taint).

Considering Marethari was the one who set Audacity free (for a reason that may have come from Audacity), I don't think Merrill was the one who was played.

Assuming for a moment that Marethari was the intended target and not a happy accident, Audacity's plan would still require Merrill to play the role of a naive patsy, and to unwillingly serve as bait.

Regardless of whether Marethari or Merrill was the intended targert, Merrill got played like a fiddle.

All it requires is for Marethari to think she knows best, despite implying she's performed no research into the Eluvians because she thinks they should stay buried, and then making a reckless choice to free a spirit without warning her clan. The Keeper says she released Audacity to protect Merrill because the spirit would have escaped through the restored Eluvian, but then she proceeds to try to kill Merrill as an abomination - I see a flaw in that logic.

I don't see how that works if Marethari is the one who fell for Audacity's claim. Given what Morrigan says about the destination for the Dragonbone Wastes' Eluvian and the way the Eluvians that were claimed by Briala operated, I'm not seeing anything to suggest that one could be used to free a spirit from a statute in the real world.

The Keeper gets reckless with the demon only because she feared Merrill was in mortal danger from it. While her actions are ultimately foolish, the motivation was to protect Merrill. Assuming for a moment that Marethari was the intended target all along, it was exploiting both her pride and her altruism. It would have needed to maneuver Merrill into a position to cause Marethari to act in the manner it wanted.

In the end it ultimately doesn't matter whether Merrill or Marathari was the intended target. In either case Merrill allows herself to be manipulated by a demon, and it is a mistake that has fatal consequences. She is not blameless.

That being said I also blame Hawke. He should have smashed that thing years before that return trip to Sundermount.

Hawke doesn't know anything about the Eluvians, so I don't see why the protagonist would necessarily take that action. The only person who has performed any depth of research into the Eluvians (in the narrative of Kirkwall) is Merrill, who researched their lore and gained additional information from the shard she cleansed. Given how important the Eluvians appear to be for Briala's cause (to help the elves of Orlais, which is similar to Merrill's intent to use the technology for the benefit of the Elvhen), I'm inclined to think Merrill was right in seeing their value in helping the People.

Hawke, depending on how he/she is roleplayed, knows a thing or two about demons. Namely, that seeking their 'help' with anything is a very bad idea. Merrill wasn't listening to reason, so a good friend would have broke it and tossed the shards in the Waking Sea.

What made the Eluvian dangerous for Merrill was not necessarily the mirror itself, but rather her obsession with it, her reliance on the demon to get it working, and a fatal combination of pride and naivety that caused her to ignore the perils associated with cutting deals with demons.
