My guess is that they are now able to select what the creators actually planned for those characters, as this new engine allows for a wider range of color.

Thing is...Cassandra has black hair in the latest trailer. The image above was from months before.

 

 

Her character kit has her with black hair too...

 

 

I can only assume that the first image was an early version where they were playing with the prospect of changing Cassandra's hair color.

It's an old bug with the lighting engine. Those images are old.

I'm too lazy to dig up the actual quote, but it has been confirmed that there is a bug in the game that makes the characters' hair and eye color change in some lights. Cassandra's hair is still black (not brown), Varric's hair is still dirty blonde (not red) and Leliana's eyes are still blue (not brown-ish).

They had a bug with the capture camera that would want to make all the hair appear red. It's been fixed as we can see from pictures much more recent.

Yup just a bug, I will say though, Cassandra looks a bit better with that red-ish brown imo

i think the lighting is really different in a lot of these screenshots. i think i remember a dev saying something about changing varrics hair a little bit. but idk if i remember right. but yea i think its mostly lighting.

Its probably the lighting in the image. Varric though. His has changed.
