The demo got me thinking... Does he (or she) know how to speak his native language? If he doesn't have at least a basic understanding of it... Disappointment is putting it mildly. My South American parents insisted that I spoke Portuguese and Spanish at home while growing up. And while the Inquisitor and his parents are different in that they have essentially left that culture behind; it'd be hard to imagine them not speaking the language. This is also the first/best opportunity for us lore buffs to get a our own meta-understanding of Qunlat. Hopefully it wasn't squandered.

We have no knowledge of the Vashoth Inquisitors background, so i wouldnt make any premature expectations

No doubt the op was operating off of giant assumptions. But the Vashoth Inquisitor not knowing Qunlat would still be annoying. That's like playing the Dwarven Casteless in DA:O with the PC not knowing anything about Orzammar.

It would only be in the game for a very minor part im assuming so personally its not a real issue, im still concerned we wont have a deep voice for Qunari.

But on topic, it would be cool if we encountered some Tal Vashoth or Qunari on our journey opening up just one entire conversation in Qunlat (similar to Witcher 2) but thats more of a wish than speculation

That would be interesting to experience (as I think it's plausible for the Vashoth protagonist to know some aspects of the culture and language), whether it's with some random Qunari or with Iron Bull.

In the words of Sten... "It is now."

Ha, in your dreams perhaps.  The Qunari will fall if they decide to invade and conquer. In fact, I'm banking on them being the main antagonists in the next installment.

For serious? Please contribute to the topic by staying on topic or don't. Whatever.

Just in case you missed it; it's about the Inquisitor speaking Qunlat and not about your personal thoughts on the Qunari as a whole.

Well, I thought you were making a funny about how soon everyone's language in Thedas will be Qunlat ( and the only way that would happen is through invasion and mass murder/ forced conversion on the Qunari's part ) and so I just rolled with it.

Anyway. No, the Qunari Inquisitor won't be fluent in Qunlat because they were never part of the Qun.

I hope that the Qunari Inquisitor can atleast use Qunlat words every once in awhile like Sten or the Arishok did when you talked to them.

More like a surface dwarf not knowing anything about Orzammar... which is reasonable.

If QunQuizzy comes from a Vashoth community, I think it's quite likely that he will have at least partial knowledge of Qunlat. I'm not expecting a whole conversation, but I do hope he says a few words every now and then like "vashedan".

Yes, which isn't Qunlat.

I hope they have a basic grasp of it though.

The children of immigrants often speak their parent's language, even if they're not as good as native speakers. I went to a dinner the other day where the mother had been born and raised in Mexico and struggled with English. Her son was a native English speaker and so spent the evening translating for her.

I've known Russian, Chinese, and Italian immigrant families where the children spoke those languages, so I think this is more common than not.

Shok ebasit hissra. Meraad astaarit, meraad itwasit, aban aqun. Maraas shokra. Anaan esaam Qun.

I'll settle for that Sentence. But I do want to say that Sentence.

Also:

They shall submit to the Qun.

I'm Chinese-Malaysian and I don't speak any Chinese dialect. I suppose I am a disappointment?

It'd be cool if they slipped some Qunlat into the Qunari Inquisitor's speech here and there. Much like Dalish Wardens used elven vocabulary every now and then - though not enough for my tastes.

I don't really mind that we probably won't have a really deep voice for Qunari. For the males, who's to say that every Qunari has a deep voice. Sure, the ones we've seen all had a deep voice. But if everyone if your cimmunity would pseak like that, wouldn't you adapt too? And seeing as our Qunari has grown up outside of the Qun, he'd probably talk like regular people.

As for female Qunaris, since we haven't heard one talk before, it's not hard to believe they don't always have deep voices. So that's why I personally don't see any problems regarding how deep their voices are.

But on-topic: maybe they would know some words depending on how close to Par-vollen and such they grew up. Or by studying their culture. But of they don't, I wouldn't mind really. They grew up outside of the Qun so yeah.

We are assuming they are only one step removed from the Qun but the qunari have been around for several hundred years.    So our Vashoth could be from early rebels who escaped from the Qun.    This many generations down the line, would they really have bothered with keeping up with a language that they never expect to use?    Most immigrants who retain their links with the language of their homeland do so because they want to maintain their link with it, even perhaps return there one day.    Surely Tal-Vashoth have no wish to maintain only sort of link with the Qun and Qunlat would appear to be language that grew from that philosophy, rather than a dialect common to the generic qunari race.     So if anything a Vashoth would have focussed on learning the language and customs of the area in which they grew up.   You might just as well ask why Josephine doesn't use Antivan words or Dorian Tevinter.     When they swear at you they might well do, but generally they will use common speech.    Iron Bull might use Qunlat to the Inquisitor as a test of whether they truly are Vashoth.    If you deny knowledge of what he is talking about, he will accept your origin as true.

There's no way of knowing this until after the game ships. If their parents left the Qun, it's likely that they would pass some of the language on to their child.

The main reason I find the Qunari racial choice unappealing is the fact that you aren't actually a Qunari and one might as well roll a human for all the difference it makes -- Small things like, having minor knowledge of the Qunari at hand or those neat little words from that "Qunlat?" thing would make it seem more appealing to roll one at the very least.
