Bioware, if you're reading this (and I sincerely hope you are, considering this....is your own forum...uhh) are you planning on implementing a generator for names for the character creator?  Because I got to be honest, I am at a complete loss as to what I'm going to name my Qunari male rogue.  Or male Elf mage for that matter.  It would just be a tremendous boon to the roleplaying experience.  Also, I wouldn't have to worry about breaking mimesis and running around with a character named SuperSwag Adaar or something.

I don't know, just throwing that idea out there.  It would probably require too much work on the algorithim programmers or whatever, considering there are four different races and gender differentiation for each race.  And to end on a bit of levity, to anyone planning on playing as a human-are you going to name your character Alec?  James Bond fans, you know what I'm talking about!  Oh yeah!

The last games had a default name so I suppose this one will too.  I remember Garrett and Marian Hawke, and Aedan Cousland.  Every origin had a fixed surname and a customizeable given name.  If the player didn't change it, there was one.

Go find a sourcebook for a tabletop roleplaying game that you you never played, and ideally have never heard of.

Read through it looking for names.  Steal one.  It won't feel like you stole a name, because you don't know the material, and you only just learned the name.

Because it's a depressing signature :(

Anyways personally I plan on naming my Qunari after things or animals such as Bright-Star or Kestrel. (it works for IB ^_^) For elf or dwarf names I just make them up but there are a lot of random name generators out there like:

http://fantasynamegenerators.com/

http://www.fantasynamegen.com/

You'll just have to write down some you like ^_^

Well, I suppose that would be adequate.  But then I wouldn't feel like it was really my OWN character, you know?  Then again, if I had to use a random name generator to begin with....Argh!   How about Bioware makes a naming conventions chart that fits with the lore for each race?  That would be even better!

hm...

uncreative much, are you?

Sorry, but I myself take ages to decide on a name for a character in games (not only offline ones, but online games, too...that and designing the right character takes at least an hour before I start playing at all!) and while I myself am not terribly creative with names, I still get it done :)

greetings LAX

ps: pre-set names (or a name-gen) only have one possible advantage for me: voice-acting (if the names are set, your character can be called by his or her given name, too instead of just by the title etc.)

I'm not good at naming things. Getting used to naming characters for WoW is bad for your roleplaying ability cause most of them are references. In any case, I have a technique. Pick a name that you like how it sounds, and start changing letters.

When I named my mage in WoW, I took the name Faye and started changing letters. Then it became Raye, then Rayen, and finished as Rheinn. Kept that one, sounds european, like a human name in a mostly medieval place. Turned out to be a german river or something, don't care much for it.

Just if you're gonna do this, do it in advance cause it's not as easy as it sounds ^^

There are a number of name generator sites out there to choose from, but in the occasion you decide to get original and just come up with something on your own, what I like to do is to just grab some paper and write down any name that comes to mind, whether you get it from a name generator or not, maybe make a few up and once you have a big enough list just skim through it and pick one that you think fits them most. Either that or mess around with what you'd like the character to look like, then worry about what name you will choose.

I think I'm just gonna name my Qunari lady after some random Qunari word that she gave herself, seeing as 'Adaar' appears to have been done in much the same fashion from what I'm gathering.

I've had an Oxford Dictionary of Names for years now, for just such a purpose... I use it a lot when making up characters and NPCs for my tabletop games. There are also plenty of historical resources available on the internet. For example, the Medieval Names Archive ( http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ ).  For elves, you could check out the "Irish and Manx Names", "Welsh, Cornish and Breton Names" or "Early Celtic Names" sections.

Qunari are a bit more difficult since they are a very original race, but I bet you could find something on that site that would work, since they have many different names from many different cultures. Or you could just string together a few syllables from other Qunari words you have encountered in DA games and written materials.
