Against it on principle, but I understand the technical considerations.

None of the DA:O romances were racegated. Were they bland, generic or not fleshed out, then?

No, but you do get to bring up your race with at least some of them.

See, I'm not against this. I'm not against race playing a part in the romance.
I just don't think that the part it plays is to prevent it from happening at all.

Being the sucker for variety that I am, I have to say I wasn’t pleased when they announced that race would be a limiting factor for romance specially after DA 2 where race and gender didn’t matter whatsoever.
But I have to agree that it does make the characters more realistic. Some people are just not into people with determined appearances, is it truly that hard to understand this? There are people like this everywhere, they are not into black/caucasians/asiatic people, regardless of personality chemistry it’s just not going to happen (believe me, I was “race gated” in real life
). And that is without considering that we are not talking different ethinicity here, we are talking about a different species, it’s not just about being turned off by horns, pointed ears or physical height, that is part of it sure but it’s also about having years of bias and taboo deeply enrooted into their personality. Some overcome those biases, others don’t, and it’s perfectly normal. That is what makes them more realistic/believable/etc, not the fact that they may or may not have a fetish for pointed ears or be turned off by horns.
Personally I don’t think it adds depth to their characters, like Gaider himself said: it’s not going to even come up unless directly prompted. It’s a personal issue that I don’t find to be much relevant at all, of course, when I’m not intending to romance them. I would also like to emphasize that I’m against race gating. For three reasons mostly:
-There is only so much of realism I need in a video game;
-It limits the amount of stories I’m able to tell (like @Former_Fiend said). I’m a sucker for variety, so anything that limits that is a con for me;
-There isn’t much point in adding this right now, specially since such limitation wasn’t present before.
