Cool minigames for the next Mass Effect?

So I'have been playing RAGE this past few days and two things stood out for me. First it's the enemy group called the Authority. They are extremely fun to fight against for multiple reasons. And second, and that's the reason for this topic, it's the cool minigames that the game has. Especially a card game that you collect ever more powerful cards across the game and they reflect the enemies and allies you have.

And that got me thinking, Mass Effect lacked that. In KoTOR we had Pazaak and Races, but that was gone in the ME trilogy. We did have that cassino in ME1, but it wasn't very useful. That was also that killing pyjak thing in Tuchanka but nothing memorable. Maybe there were some others that I can't remember...

Citadel DLC had some very cool things, especially the combat arena, and that's the kind of thing that I'd love to see more integrated in the next game. Something more meaningful and fun, that helps you live the universe and collect some credits while enjoying yourself.

Yeah, I agree the combat arena was a very good idea. I sometimes spend hours there.

I like to promote my idea for having a First Contact War game in the Armax Arena, and a Scillian Blitz (that's probably misspelled but whatever) game as well. This way we can experience these parts of Mass Effect history without the need for time travel or a prequel, and even the chance to play as young captain Anderson and Shepard (if he's a War Hero) in ME4.

As for other minigames... well... Tetris?

Or a simplistic 2-d sidescroller game with a cartoony looking Shepard jumping on Reaper enemies :D

We had Pinnacle Station in ME1 as a DLC. It was kind of an Armax Arena and had a First Contact War scenario. Yet ME1 had terrible combat and the level design wasn't interesting.

I see, I didn't know about that cause the Pinnacle DLC isn't on PS3...

Space combat. Mini game or not.....it's needed.

I tend to believe all role playing games need an arena you can come back to. They're often fun and very useful for testing new builds. I prefer the Mass Effect 3 citadel dlc to pinnacle station as well greater diversity. Plus the one in the citadel can grant you some nice reward. I could like a return of quasar. I spent a little time playing that and a sort of dog racing is fun to. Now the varren racing on the citadel is a fun concept but I believe it needs to be more interactive. I'd prefer something along the lines of chocobo racing from final fantasy seven.

Though explaining how your character has time to breed their own champion racer would be rough.

One thing the mass effect series hasn't had and i believe it really needs is space combat. Something along the lines of knights of the old republic or what we have in jade empire would be great in either case. Well in my opinion. For those that haven't played KOTOR, you should, you're controlling the guns while someone else flies and shooting down incoming enemies while making use of a range finder and radar. Jade Empire on the other hand has you maneuvering your plain from a top down view on a 2D grid. Think some of the easier classic flight games.

Then again getting in some strategy game play could be fun to. In order to do that properly though you'd need more then one ship.

I'm a bit bias here though as I tend to enjoy strategy games so anything they're going to put in an rpg is just going to be an easy reward to me. I can imagine those that came into Mass Effect 2 or 3 after having a lot of experience with shooters though the arena was an easy reward.

well there was that one mini game on the mass effect 3 website, if you remember it you had to push other blocks off a platform or something like that, that was fun we could have that one in the forth one

I think ME3 Citadel DLC got it right with mini games they were fun but not tedious. ME2 on the other hand had the worst mini games, the decryption and hacking mini games got tedious very quickly and I don't miss them.

It really depends on what you mean by mini-games. The ME2 hacking and crate-opening thing was tedious mostly because we had to keep doing it. I prefer mini-games to be an optional thing.

As for those types of optional mini-games, I'm not sure. The only game I saw was the Pazaak-esque quasar. Some card games would be nice, maybe Skyllian-Five, see how different a poker game that is.

@Inprea, you mean something like the Golden saucer in Final Fantasy 7. I can get down with that idea. For a while I was worried, when I saw the name of this topic I immediately thought it would be filled with people asking for more hacking, decrypting and planet scanning. I don't hate these mini games but I do not care for how frequently the hacking and decrypting occurred in ME2, how much planet scanning I had to do in ME2 or how essential it was to getting a better outcome in ME3.

I'm a firm believer in the fact that you can only pull a rabbit out of your hat so many times before the trick begins to fail to impress and if you keep doing it over and over again your audience will turn on you, and if you force your audience to watch you repeat your mediocre trick again and again they will lynch you which is the state of mind I ended up in after ME2 and ME3. If you however make it purely optional thing and give it's own designated space away from the campaign....

It depends....if you mean hacking minigames then yes really like it. Totally hate the auto-hacking in ME3. I like the feeling of not having the requisite to open certain crates unless your specs are not adequate. It create immersion and replayability for me.

If you mean a game like card games or other things to do it purely for jest it then no...never really bothered. However I would welcome a combat arena provided incentives for doing it are awarded. Even if it sounds ridiculous I quite liked Pinnacle Station because it has mini-story behind it and a reward at the end of it. I also roleplayed that DLC when in ME1 considering it as the Specter training program and did it immediatly after obtaining the title. I had fun with it.

They can do really what they want with minigames however they should create incentives for us to do them like mini-quests and rewards.

Hacking sucked. So did planet scanning. Don't bring them back. Ever.

I still play 1 and 2 just because I loved the series so much.  Planet scanning for my over 40 ME2 runthroughs was taxing.  Even when you are as efficient at it as I am.

I hated the ME1 hacks for PC.  They were painful.  In ME2, I found the hacks to be fun and easy.  Scanning in ME3 was painful as well, because the speed of rotation was so painfully slow.  That and having Reaper packs chase you all over the solar system.

If I had my choice, the ME2 style hacking would stay - but all of the rest of that rescource gathering and all can go the way of the dodo bird.

I thought I was the only person in the world who preferred planet scanning in ME2 to how it was in ME3.

For me it's escape the Reapers mini game that ruins ME3's planet scanning. The margin for error is very, very small if you can't find all the resources before they show up in a solar system, then you have perform a mission to get them to go away. This forces me spread out my planet scanning evenly and breaks the flow of the game, there isn't enough forward momentum ( which is odd because one of my biggest complaints about ME3 is how rushed I am ) .

In ME2 planet scanning is very, very tedious and sadly far to essential to the gameplay to pass up ( to improve the Normandy but also ME2 has been stripped of most of its rpg mechanics and the only opportunities to indulge in what us there requires resources ). However, thanks to the character import , most of the recourse gathering is cut in half. For the rest, I just go on a binge scanning sessions as soon as I get Mordin, once I have enough to fully upgrade the Normandy I stop and play the game as normal, I only ever stop if I need to upgrade some weapon. Essentially what I do is I get the tedious stuff out of the way first so that I enjoy the game later. That's just the way I am work first, play later, pay your dues now, reap your reward later. I don't like being forced to stop after every mission to find x trinket for John/Jane Doe to improve the strength of my magic win metre.

I'm pretty lazy about the ME3 planet scanning. Each time I enter a new system I do a quick save. I then run around and find all the resources. After that I just reload my quick save and go directly to the locations. It saves a lot of time and frustration as there is no mad rush to get to a planet, grab the resources and run before a reaper gets there.

In ME3 all you had to do was outrun the Reapers.  You re-enter the system on the  opposite side that you left it on - so use this to your advantage.  I never had to do a mission and come back to a system with the Reapers 'reset'.

See a cluster of planets nice and close to each other?  That's where you look first!  Also - look for worlds close to where the reapers will come from (the big red arrows).  Its best to have those done so that you don't get pounced on.  Once they are out chasing you, all you had to do was run, ping - when they get close you hit the boundary and start the rat race again from the opposite side.

Ahhh.  Now I understand.  :)

I was used to the fast paced space combat (showing my age here) because I was very heavily into games back in the day such as X-Wing and Tie Fighter.

I actually enjoy the rush - the split second maneuvers, being one step ahead while being pressed.  It actually makes my adrenaline flow.

I don't really mind the ME1 or 2 hacking/bypassing/whatever minigames, or being chased by reapers (though the implementation was not all that great).

But I really don't like having to wait an eternity, or going of to remote-system-2 to find enough resources to build a giant platin- Dr. Chackwas statue so she can heal shep's scars.

Fun minigames were E.G. Fallout (3?!) and NV's lockpicking, and the hacking minigame in Deus Ex:HR

Star Trek: EliteForce 2 also had a minigame which was not too bad, a bit like the old DOS -PIPES game (or whatever it was called). Just without the time limit.

PIPES itself would also give a rather interesting minigame. But considering that there was recently (aka; Not so long ago that i forgot ) a post from someone who, due to age, could not manage to get the ME2 not-hacking-minigame done in time, this might not be for everyone.

The Arena in the citadel DLC was also great. It is way better to check builds and weapons against 'real' enemies than some armour plates.

(But the Spectre shooting range also was a much needed addition!)

A reflex and accuracy shooting range, similar to the Holodeck one they had at TNG might also be fun ( event-hough I usually suck at reflex tests....)
