Hey everyone! I have a problem automatically patching my NWN2 game. The problem is the following.

I have the original game, plus MotB and SoZ expansions. Following the advice on the internet, I installed NWN2, and played the game until the first conversation. After that, I installed the 2 expansions, and launched the game, and manually selected the option to update (I did not let it update when it prompted me after each installation).

The auto patcher successfully downloaded and installed the first patch (which is about 333 MB in size, if I remember correctly), and it then proceeded to download other updates, but failed. The error message I get is the following: "The server name or address could not be resolved." I'm not sure what this means.

My drivers are all up to date.

My graphics card is Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT.

My windows version is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I have the DirectX redistributable installed on my computer, as well as the latest DX versions.

One more thing, I just recently upgraded from Win XP Professional, and in Win XP SP3, the game ran just fine. I had some trouble with the auto patcher, but resolved it, and it worked just fine after that. So I know for a fact that I have good drivers, and that there's nothing wrong with my PC per se. I have more than the required specs to run this game twice over.

And I also kow that I can manually patch the game by using the fles from NWNVault, but I would prefer if the auto patcher worked its magic and did it for me because I've read that patching it manually can introduce other bugs in the system, and that the auto patcher is the recommended way to do it. So I would very much prefer to do this via the auto patcher, and not have to resort to 3rd party stuff.

Thanks a lot for reading. If you need any more info, please let me know. I've tried reinstalling the game 3 times already, every time trying other stuff, but to no avail. I will uninstall the game and all other files now, and let's hope I can get some help here :) Thanks!

The auto-patcher is broken for similar reasons to the MP server browser.  It didn't work for me either when I did a re-installation after a long long time.

Manual patching is the only way.  It's tedious, but if you have two brain cells to rub together and follow the instructions correctly, it works.

Other solution: Buy the game from gog.com, it comes fully patched, you just need to request a key for multiplayer. Yes, you already own the game, but this will also solve the issue without the need to manually patch.

So you're saying that the issue I am having is not because of my computer, but because of something else? Could you clarify? :)

Also, manual patching is not a problem for me, I know how to do it, and as far as I have seen, it wouldn't really take long to manually patch it.

I can manually patch the game if it comes to it, there's really no need to buy another game just because of that xD By the way, this is the second time I bought this game. The first copy, despite being an original, would not install (expansions worked fine, but the official game would not install), so I had to buy another one. I already put a good amount of money into this game, and I would really prefer not to buy it a third time xD

One question though. Is it possible to play NWN2 online if I manually patch the game? And are there any bugs/other problems that occur when the game is patched manually?

i think that error you mentioned translates to "the server no longer exists"

and, uh, if you have keys to play online you can play online ...

The error message I get is "The server name or address could not be resolved." So, what exactly does this mean? Does it really mean the server no longer exists? I have to ask because I'm not knowledgeable about these things.

Also, if the server does not exist, how is it possible that the auto patcher downloaded the first update (333 MB in size)? The server has to exit then, right?

In laymans terms, picture going and checking a list of addresses (from the phone book, or online map, or whatever) to see the address of a house. It finds the address. Then you drive to the address, and find there is no house at the address. Maybe there used to be a house there, but there isn't one when you got there. Your computer is basically checking this address list and then driving over to the address, only to find there is no "house" there.

and, uh, believe it or not i recognize the 333mb file you're receiving. It's not a regular patch or update. It is in fact a file VO_X1.zip (the voiceover files for MotB) that, uh, installation of SoZ *mistakenly deletes*.

It's a huge fau pax, so it wouldn't/doesn't surprise me if there's still some server somewhere that serves it out 'officially'. but i believe the regular updates are nix and must be done manually,

Aaaah right, let's see if I got this right then. Basically, there are no more official servers to download patches from (even if there are such servers, they are no longer active?), i.e., the auto patcher is no longer officially supported or some such?

Edit: So, for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, to get the latest version of NWN2 that works properly, shoul I simply follow the update advice in the sticky thread here, or would you recommend another course of action?

http://neverwinterva...-patcher-tnt220

That's what I'd use. And will use the next time ....

( although, in the interest of thoroughness, there's a rumor that if your computer is detached from the Internet, and all the patches are in the NwN2 folder, and you Update .. it will -- but at this pt. thats just a rumor )

About using the patcher tnt220 made...when it says to unzip file in installation folder...that`s just where all the game files are? Not the "Patch" folder?

Just a a note for future necro:

I've re-installed numerous times (computer upgrades, not game problems) using already downloaded patch zip files while unplugging from the internet.  Did this even when the official server was still up.  Works great!!!  (not a rumor)

The patcher has some nifty features, but is not really needed.  Just place all of the patch zip files in the game folder, then, run the game's updater.  The game will check for the internet, won't find the internet, then, it'll check the game folder for the zip files.  It will find and will install each patch zip in order until done.

Also, installing then playing between each install disk is what someone suggested when the game first came out and the game was buggy as H.  Just install NWN2, install MotB, then, install SoZ.  No starting or playing needed between install disks.  All folders and directories will be created and the game will automatically be upgraded to 1.20.  Now, you just have to have the patches above 1.20.  If you want to start and play between each install disk, knock yourself out.

Tried and proven.

PS:  I still have my CDs (yep, CDs), a Steam copy (about $4, on a holiday sale a few years back), and a gog copy ($15 included in the entire D&D collection last year (IWD, BG, NWN, NWN2, all expansions, and more, etc...)).  I still haven't installed from Steam or gog, yet.   :P
