I have a question. How can you edit 3D armor models to your liking using a 3d modeling program ( I have Blender ). This question of course covers how to later export such a model to a DA Toolset for use within a mod. I would be greatful for any information, me and my friend would like to start making mods of our own, including model editing and so forth, we're just not to sure where to and how to start. So far we've created custom items using existing models in a game, though we would like very much to create custom models. If anyone has any tips or could give us a nudge in a right direction we would be greatful.

Yeah... What she said.

Seriously though, we are just starting out; I'm concentrating on custom tint overrides at the moment. Of course, the one thing we both would love to learn is to create our own armor and clothes models. Honestly, there is a deficiency of modded heavy/massive armor for females. I would like to remedy that.

As far i know "Newbypower" has made a Blender exporter for models. Maybe something to search for?

I am repeating myself here, but I strongly suggest that anyone wanting to make new models start with simple non-animated/skinned models, like buildings, weapons or placeables, before attempting to tackle armours and new creatures.

Starting on the most difficult tasks will just lead to disappointment.

Opinion noted.

Returning to the topic, I'd like to know how to pull an existing model [e.g . Starfang or armor] from DA:O for use in Blender. Does Newbypower's file cover this as well?

Firstly, Eshme thank you for your hint, it was very useful.
Secondly, Adinos, I don't want to make anything that I can't put on my character. I would like to learn to make weapon models, note: learn. However I'm so going to need some directions, of course I know I should start out with making a 3D model of a pebble, but me and Verin are a tad impatient and we tend to go straight for the throat, usually relying on our determination to see us through. I might have introduced my question wrongly: I do hope to someday reach the level of modding to be able to create my own armor, weapons, you name it... at the moment all I want is for my character to possess female features ( read: a waist ) so she does not look like a brick. I pay a lot of attention to aesthetic detail.

There are a few projects up that are geared for 3d model modders:

DATool model manipulator
tazpn's command line tools
DAO Toolset Model Exporter
Blender Import-Export script

The discussions and comments on each project will have some useful information as well. There may be other projects around, those are just the ones I'm aware of right now.

Sure, I understand that, but what I am saying is that there is a HUGE difference in complexity between making armours and weapons.

The reason is that armours are not just static models you place on animated character models - the armoyrs *are* the animated character models.

What I suggest to anyone wanting to make new models is the following:

Start by making simple changes to existing models, like reskinning or rescaling them - which you can do without using a 3D program.  Once you have mastered the process of getting the modified models into the toolset and into the game, move on to the next step.

Next export static (non-animated/skinned) models, make modifications to them.in the 3D program of your choice.  Once you have mastered the export/import process, move on to the next step.

Next export animated/skinned models (armours and creatures)  and make changes to those.  If you can get the modified models into the toolset and have them work in the game, you are ready for the final step.

Finally, start making new armours and creatures from scratch.  Have fun.

I don't think there are any tools currently capable of exporting new animated models from scratch. Mt script is getting close but it currently can't do so reliably.

Adinos, thank you for the detailed procedure explanation, I will try to follow it to the letter. However if you could just indulge me, I have one more question: how do you make small changes to existing 3D models using toolset ( believe me, I have been trying to do this for the past few days...) ? If there is already existing topic about this, if you could just point me to it, that would be great, thank you.

Avaraen, thank you for taking the time to post this links for me.

ChewyGumball, thank you for the info.
