Name: Alec Trevelyan
Concept: As the second child of a noble family, Alec's role in life was to be the spare to the throne. He studied fervently about law, governance, and even a bit of swordplay, but it all changed when he was seven years old. Since all nobles were expected to be cultured, he and his elder sister, Katarina, went to visit the gallery of Jestev Sarles, a famous artist. Alec didn't understand the man's paintings as "symbols of the chaos of the Dragon Age", and considered the man a hack. As the artist heckled him and his family, Alec clenched his fists and, all of a sudden, a jolt of lightning stretched from his hand and completely incinerated the work. All of the paintings were oil, so the fire spread and ruined his work.
His father, a devout Andrastian, considered the boy cursed. His mother, while too polite to condemn, called for the templars almost immediately. Only his sister wa supportive. She not only found the entire affair hilarious, but she always admired mages, thinking their powers would be very useful in running a fiefdom, although she thought more of casting sleep spells on boring advisors than blowing people up. Before he left for the Circle, she gave him as many mementos of home as she could.
He was a decent, if not spectacular, pupil. He resented being separated from his beloved elder sister, and that his parents, who were normally so loving, changed their opinion overnight because of his magic. This caused him to be very distracted. But he bonded with some of his Circle mates, and people gravitated towards him. He had learned how to draw people towards them, speak to them, talents he tried to cultivate before his magic manifested. Some of them were scared, some of them were brash, but they all advanced well, and Alec thought they'd all become mages together.
However, during the night, a girl he had a crush on, an elf girl named Nalitya, who always had fitful dreams and missed her family back in the alienage, raged and turned into an abomination in the middle of the night. He helped the templars kill her, but that was the first time he ever became afraid. He sat alone and barely for the longest time. His other friends tried to get him to be his normal self, but he rejected them, claiming for the first time, he feared his spell
A few days later, another girl, despondent of both Nalitya's death and Alec's fear, elected for the Rite of Tranquility. Alec thought the entire procedure was horrifying, and considered her no longer a person. The next day, he received a letter from his sister, now the head of the family. She told him she hoped he was well, and expressed her desire to meet him again. It gave him the drive to return to his studies, and he threw himself into it more than ever.
His Harrowing passed, he became a full mage in the Circle. He also started mentoring a few of his friends again, and a few others. He was considered to almost be ready for the position of Enchanter.
When the Kirkwall Rebellion happened, many mages from his Circle revolted. Driven by the desire to see his sister again, he took up arms and fought. After the Circle was destroyed and the templars scattered, the phyalctries were destroyed and Alec went to visit his sister.
Katarina was overjoyed to see her beloved brother, and he served as her silent advisor, working under a false name to hide his magic, passing himself off as a distant relative who fled the chaos of Kirkwall. He learned as much as he could about the world beyond the Circle, about countries and peoples.
When the peace conference was announced in Fereldan, Alec volunteered to go. Katarina needed to take care of the lands there, as bandit attacks were on the rise, and he had more than a vested interested in the Circle. Of course, at this point, Alec had no desire to return to the Circle.
Personality - Alec is a leader, whether he wants to be or not. His voice reverberates well, and he picks up on subtle clues like eye motion, themes they revisit in their speech (like greater causes or family), a consequence of being the leader of his small group of apprentices. His noble upbringing during his more impressionable years shows, as he is incredibly well-mannered and poised.
Politics - He is pro-mage, but very anti-Circle, thinking that separating people from their families inevitably caused the mages to want to revolt. He has no particular issues with templars: Some stared at him inappropriately while he bathed but ultimately most were polite. He is anti-Chantry, because he thinks they leash the templars with their talk of faith and controlling the lyrium, turning their necessary powers into nothing more than tyranny, and that the templars are victims of their oppression. He doesn't know much about dwarves, but thinks the concept of the Dalish living on the outskirts of society is stupid: He remembers his history lessons, and when both Arlathan and the Dales turned inward and refused to deal with humans, the humans assumed the worst and attacked them. He is rabidly anti-Qunari, because he thinks it combines both the anti-family and tyranny of the templars, treats mages as inhuman, and considers all people slaves to an ideology that makes no sense: The qunari in Kirkwall didn't even try to mention to the authorities they were searching for a tome that the Orlesians were returning to them because they were so blind to differing ideology.
Party - Alec doesn't have much of a sense of humor, but he knows enough to recognize one, so he'll be friendly, but not necessarily get along, with Varric or Sera. He'll really like Solas, and want to learn as he does about the Fade. He thinks Cassandra is a bit naive, but he likes that she's trying to keep order as a Seeker. He gets along with Vivienne, but thinks she should amend her policies about the Circle, and treat it more like a University than a prison. He isn't sure about Dorian, considering his necromancy and the rampant blood magic among Tevinter. He has enough knowledge about spirits to know that Cole would fixate on a single ideology, but would never discuss anything with him outside of that. He'll like Blackwall because their philosophies mimic, but he'll give the Iron Bull a wide berth, considering him one step away from turning back into a fanatic. He'll admire Leliana knowing that Katarina employed similar people to deal with problems in her lands. Josephine would be a necessary addition, as Alec knows an organization like the Inqusition requires dealing with diplomats, emissaries, and of course, needs to be bankrolled. Cullen he'll get along with very well. He knows the story of Kirkwall, of how he stood against the Knight-Commander, and his belief that templars exist to protect mages as well as guard them.
