I saw this video a while back, but I saw no thread for it, so I decided to ask what fans and developers thought about it.

 

Jim Sterling, video game journalist for the Escapist, criticized the notion of Bioware's claim of "mature and tasteful" sex scenes, saying that by simply talking with companions and expecting sex is a form of subjugation and rewarding the player for sex and presents a harmful ideology.

What are your thoughts on Mr. Sterling's views? Do you believe that games such as Mass Effect or Dragon Age promote ill-conceived notions on relationships?

 

I've been a long time fan of Bioware games and am proud of them for supporting gay rights. But, I wish to know if this ideology of promoting romantic gameplay will lead to real-life harm.

I'm against placing sex in any sort of a pedestal. It is, at its core, a simple function of friction with a dash of biology thrown in. Originally for the purpose of procreation. Beyond that, it can be a form of close intimacy, a pleasurable way to pass the time or a method of torture and anything between. Intimate relationships should never be trivialized, but sex deserves no special pedestal nor protection.

Meh if anything the Witcher is much more prone to this than Dragon age. At least with most companions its a caring and loving relationship.

This argument is so close to the 'video game violence one' that I don't really see it necessitating its own discussion, probably why it hasn't had one. It's also just as likely to create a thread that inevitably spirals out of control.

I am interested in hearing an alternative in a game where romances are optional.

He has a point what BioWare has a 'cynical obligation' to provide romances. They could just skip sex scenes and leave it up to the audience to fill in the gaps.

Jimquisition?  Yeah, not that watching that dreck.  It sounds like a whole lot of of slippery slope and other logical fallacies.  I never cared about the sex scenes in Bioware games.  The romances, to me, offered more character interaction and a layer of depth not offered in other games.  I LOVE character interaction, which is something Bioware is good at.  And good God there's nothing wrong with expecting sex in a meaningful relationship anyway.  As Sigmund Freud once put it....

 

The only unusual sexual activitiy is not having any.

biologically yes,  but i always saw the "ultimate" goal as being happy together for the rest of your lives(or however long the relationship lasts)

I don't think Mr Sterling's arguments fit Dragon Age especially well, since sex generally hasn't been the conclusion to the romance plot.

In as much as it's valid, I don't see how you could write a romantic plot about which such a criticism could not be made, unless you made the romance a chaste one.  If you see the conversations as a chore, then sex is cast as a reward.  But I don't think the romances are really for people who see interacting with the companions as a chore.

Also, I feel like he's kind of building a straw man out of Mr Lee's attempt to basically say that the sex scenes will try to be sexy but probably won't show nipples in a way that didn't sound ridiculous.
