So as the title says Im new to the DA franchise and Inquisition has me interested, but I just have some questions.

1) Do the mounts do anything in particular?

The reason I ask is because you said there were multiple mounts besides the horse in an interview during E3. As well I saw that the Pre-Order bonus included codes for at least 3 other mounts, 1 of which was a horse clad in flaming inquisition garb and plated armor. So does this add any effect to the horse, or player or purely cosmetic?

2) Would I have needed to play the previous DA games to understand and effectively hop into this one? Or can I jump into this and understand everything?

As I stated before Ive never played the other DA games. This was mainly due to personal preference because I usually dont like playing with AI companions (rare circumstances excluded), plus this game seems like one of those rare moments where I lift the rule.

3) Can your companions die?

I mean in midbattle. Is this one of those games where you have to keep a close eye on your companions health because they can die during battle and thats it for them? Or do they get downed?

4) What exactly is the Skyhold Throne?

Is it just a decoration piece inside your home? There isnt much details on it other than the same quote shared on Pre-Order pages and I was unaware this game had a "base" location.

5) Can you have multiple romances in this game?

Not sure how romances work in DA universe. Do you choose 1 partnet and continue working on your relationship with them, or are you open to have relationships with multiple people? Also when your romance hits its "cap" or "end sequence" can you continue in that relationship or are you done with it? And how does romance impact the characters?

1) Do the mounts do anything in particular?

Not really. Mounted combat isn't allowed in the game. They are merely a means to an end (i.e. to get you from point A to point B quicker). Inquisition has 10 large open world "zones" for lack of a better term, and the horses are meant to fascilitate travel. When you are riding on your mounts, your companions will disappear temporarily until you are back on foot.

2) Would I have needed to play the previous DA games to understand and effectively hop into this one? Or can I jump into this and understand everything?

No, but I highly recommend picking up at least DA: Origins. It is perhaps the single best western RPG of the last decade, and is easily on par with Bioware's other hits (e.g. Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate ... although I will always give the nodd to NWN. Oh Aribeth, how I miss thee).

If you want a good primer on the DA universe, I recommend picking up a copy of the "World of Thedas." It is beautifully illustrated and chock-full of Dragon Age lore (be prepared for Origins and DA II spoilers, though).

3) Can your companions die?

They can die mid-combat, and quite frequently if you don't think tactically and use your resources wisely. After combat is over, if at least one member of your party is still standing, your companions will get back on their feet and you proceed from there. DA II was more actiony than Origins ... Inquisition is meant to be a fusion of the two. The producers have said that they will limit the number of health potions that you can carry around at any given time as well, forcing you to think about whether or not you want to engage in a particular fight. Short answer: this is not Diablo III.

4) What exactly is the Skyhold Throne?

It's just a decorative throne for the Skyhold, which is a very elaborate base for the Inquisition. Bioware hasn't gone into detail about the Skyhold, but they have said that it has "a ton” of people, including Advisors, Companions, and NPCs, and that it is “highly customizeable”; there are options to rebuild parts of it and perform crafting and research.

5) Can you have multiple romances in this game?

You can juggle romances for a while (e.g. in Origins you could romance Leliana and Morrigan simultaneously), but as you progress down the romance arch, you will usually be forced to pick one. Romance isn't pivotal to the story, despite the impression you might get from these forums. You usually don't hit the "romance cap" until the very end of the game. In Origins and DA II, the was an epilogue telling you what happened to your respective romance.

Morrigan pretty much answered everything but I'd like to add one more thing in response to your 2nd question and say that the Dragon Age Keep will essentially give you a run down on the events of the first two games.

They get you from A to B faster than walking. That's it.

2) Would I have needed to play the previous DA games to understand and effectively hop into this one? Or can I jump into this and understand everything?

You'd need to play the previous games to understand everything. BioWare has spent some time building up the various factions you'll navigate.

However, the main plot of DA:I is saving Thedas from demons pouring into the world. No prior knowledge needed for that.

3) Can your companions die?
I mean in midbattle...

No.

4) What exactly is the Skyhold Throne?

It's just something pretty to decorate with.

5) Can you have multiple romances in this game?

After some basic flirting, you're locked into a romance and can't pursue another unless you break up with your love interest. You can string them on one at a time, but that means you won't see the end of any of the romances.

1. We haven't had mounts before, but from what we've seen, they're simply to get from one area to another since Inquisition is going to be a lot bigger than the previous games.

2. I think everybody here would highly recommend you play at the very least Dragon Age Origins (I think you can get it with all the DLC for like $10 on steam), the choices you make in Origins and DA2 will change the world state in Inquisition. You'll be able to use the default state though, and the Dragon Age Keep if you want to choose a particular world state. However the Devs have stated that they've made an effort to make sure people can jump into Inquisition without prior knowledge.

3. In combat? Yes, the same as most other RPG games. But they are revived when the battle ends. Some of them can also die during the story depending on your choices, or in some cases you can even choose to kill them yourself.

4. It's a bonus item just to make your throne pretty. Other than that we don't know anything about it.

5. In previous games you could, but the characters don't exactly just let you go ahead and string them along. They'll call you out. The Devs have said that in DAI after you lock-in to one romance it'll lock you out of other some other serious romance options in game, but I think we'll probably have plenty of other opportunities to harmlessly flirt with others even if you're locked into a relationship.

I feel like the answers to question #3 given here might confuse you, so to make things clear:

Once a companion runs out of health, they are temporarily "dead" until the end of the battle, but are revived afterward. In previous DA games, they would also have injuries after being "killed", i.e. debuffs or reduced max health, which could be remedied with injury kits.

Companions are never permanently killed in battle.

#3 No, they simply get downed and are automatically resurrected once your out of combat.

These people have answered your questions pretty thoroughly, but I just want to add one thing: Dragon Age lore is extensive. The devs have said that this will be a good starting point if you're new to the series and that the Keep will fill in a lot of backstory for the previous two games, but I would highly encourage you to learn a little bit more about the world on your own before diving in. Whether that means playing the previous games, reading World of Thedas or any of the wonderful novels written by Gaider or Weekes, or just browsing the Dragon Age wiki, I would suggest doing some background research. This forum is also a good source of info, but be aware that many people will have certain biases, like whether or not blood magic is evil.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the game. We all love the DA series here (obviously) and I hope you love it, too.
