Am I going to be switching discs a lot?

So I'm going to be playing Inquisition on the 360, and given the intensive graphics and the new game engine, and the larger scope of Inquisition in general, it's pretty much a guarantee that it will be a multi-disc game. (I don't know anything about next gen consoles, but I imagine that they also have the same amount of discs?) My big question is this: Am I going to be switching discs in and out all the time like in Mass Effect 2 and 3? (Or is it too early to say?)

In ME2 it wasn't so bad, but in ME3 it was really annoying how the content was divided out (especially with some of the content being available almost right away but then on a separate disc, like Grissom Academy). Is the content going to be spread out more sensibly or am I going to have to keep the box out just in case I need to switch discs? It kinda kills my mojo when I have to switch back and forth with discs when doing 'side quests' and then switching back when I go to pursue the main story line again. (I'm jealous of the people with the skills to create a new rig for their consoles and their bravery to void their warranties.) I mean, it isn't the end of the world, but it can get a bit tedious, at times.

Legend of Dragoon.  Four discs. Although the way you said it was split up does seem a bit weird.

to be fair that was ps1 and it had voices.  that was a huge deal.  the last game i had with multi discs was shadow hearts covenant on ps2

I loved that game. But there it wasn't so bad because it followed a sort of chapter/act format, so each disc was it's own self-contained act within the game and you switched discs at the end. So each disc was played through sequentially. Not nearly as annoying as constantly switching out discs. (Also I will never understand the fascination with putting the end-game mission on the first disc).

It'll probably be just on 360 of the consoles; all the others have games on Blu-ray, while 360 games are on DVDs.

It was also a game that came out at the end of the system's life cycle, just like ME3 and DAI are.  When you reach end of life for a console then the devs have learned to push the hardware to the limit, which usually means multiple disc games :P.  If only the 360 had the balls to put a BluRay drive in :P I wouldn't be surprised if Hideo Kajima (spelling?) put out a Metal Gear game that had to go on 3 BluRays just because he is crazy that way.

IIRC Bluray wasn't nearly so mainstream as it is now when the 360 first came out. Actully looking up some dates quick, when the first 360s were released (in 2005), Bluray was still a year away in practical terms. They totally could have put one in in the later iterations though, but then that would probably have made things more difficult to standardize without making a new console outright. I mean, and the whole Blu Ray thing is part of why the PS3 was slow to catch on at first. No one really had a use for it yet outside the games themselves, it wasn't industry standard yet, and the added expense meant that they sold the things at a loss for quite a while. (I'm over-simplifying here, but you get the point.)

....I miss the days of backwards-compatible consoles though. I need to pick up a PS2 sometime so I can still play some of my PSone games that I'm clinging on to.

I imagine they'll do what GTA V and Watch Dogs did and have a mandatory install on one or two discs and have another for playing the game.

And was the disc-switching really that big of a deal? I only had the switch two or three times each for ME2 and ME3. Not even a minor nuissance.

It is if you're marathoning the series and doing multiple play-throughs in quick succession >.>

Like I said, it's not a HUGE deal, but it does kinda pull me out of that immersion when there's an abrupt and unexpected message telling me it's time to swtich discs. I'd rather play through acts or chapters and switch the discs between one of them, but since they're adding exploration and a kind of sandbox element to this game, it might be more difficult to do that.

Me had multiple discs on 360?

Yes both ME2 and ME3 had multiple discs. I think FFXIII had four discs, but that was a pretty cinematic-intense game.

No instead they tried to get people to pay out the arse a HDDVD add-on thing that was never actually used for games, thankfully.  I was being facetious:P

Ah Sorry it's a bit late here so I didn't pick up on that. I may get it for PC in the future, but I have a laptop and it's not really super powerful so I'm better off waiting on that front anyway.

???

I did never have to switch discs in ME3 (one of the few good things about that mess of a game) and in ME2 it was not really often...

Strange experiences you got there...

As for having to switch discs? - Isn't this game tied to Origin, so no disc swapping (except while installing :) )

greetings LAX

ps: I still would rather swap discs if Origin was optional :( (I don't much like those digital-download-plattforms...neither steam, nor origin or ubi-launcher etc. :( - was better when the companies didn't have those!)

The only game I can think of that required disc switches on Xbox 360 was LA Noire, and that was because of the staggering volume of cinematics and face capture graphics.

Back when I had a 360 (about two weeks ago) I never ever had to switch discs while playing the game. Sure, you had for example GTA V with one disc for install and another for playing. But switching during gameplay? Nope, never.

That's because the PS3 uses blu-rays, which hold a whole lot more data than the DVDs that the 360 was using. Fortunately blu-ray is far more common in 2014, and both the PS4 and Xbox One use blu-rays. Massive improvement is massive.

Yes. In fact, every region will come on it's own disc, with another disc specifically for all the indoors locations. Inquisition will be the most disc-swappingly awesome game ever.

Honestly though, I'd suspect that it will be printed on at least 2 or 3 discs for the 360. As for how often you'll have to switch, I think that would depend on how they build the game. Either ME2/FFXIII style where you switch after a certain story point, but that locks the game down into a more linear path as the content you can access is restricted by which disc you are on, or ME3 style, where they had most of the story on one disc and the sidequests on the other (I think that's how it worked though)

The benefit of Option A is that less swapping is required overall, but I dislike the content locking it includes. The benefit of Option B is that the content is more openly availible, but you'll have to switch between the discs pretty often.

Bite your tongue sir!

Yeah those are pretty much my suspicions as well. It's pretty much guaranteed to be 2-3 discs for the 360. And since it is supposed to be more exploratory I'll just have to resign myself to running up to the xbox fairly frequently.

Unless I invest in a spare 360 and do something like this to it (hahaha jk.) I can't find it now, but I do remember also seeing something where someone had jerry-rigged an old multi-disc DVD player carousel up to their xbox as well (maybe it was the original xbox) but it was a lot less elegant than this.
