So when I read most guides on best order to play the game as, they often suggest going to Circle Tower first, partly because you recruit Wynne your dedicated healer, however I decided to be the healer this run so I highly doubt I'll use Wynne all that much. I know I should do the DLC first, probably Stone Prisoner -> Wardens Keep -> Ostagar but then what? Is it possible to visit some of these areas prematurely just far enough to access certain vendors without locking yourself into the questline?

As for companions, I don't use a set rule for them, aside from probably not using Wynne and the Dog very much I will most likely rotate through all companions to liven up the game.

Recommend leaving RtO until 18th lvl (cannot recall exactly; seek confirmation) until the item loot is created as high tier as possible.

I do the Circle first for efficiency; helps with the events at Redcliffe. And as a Mage, you may have cause for wanting to start there anyway; also nice to get the Font bonuses ASAP.

The loot that is broken (scaled to the Warden's level) can be fixed by selling it to one of the Dryden brothers at the keep and buying it back; on some (non-PC) platforms it may be sufficient to store the stuff in the party chest, leave, and come back. The exception here seem to be Shale's crystals, and not all top-tier crystals are for sale somewhere or other. That could be a reason to delay Cadash Thaig as long as possible (late teens, early twenties).

All the merchants can be visited without triggering inescapable event sequences, except for the smith in Redcliffe.

This definitely works on 360.

Or the merchant in Circle tower.

While true, waiting until one gets to 18th or so will save a lot in gold, if one the PC; hence ,y suggestion for getting as high as possible. Plus, for me it makes a better connection to the story to wait.

I thought the RTO items were always Red Steel, regardless of when you went.

(getting loot whenever it is convenient since the Dryden brothers can upgrade weapons and armour - for a considerable commission)

True, but leaving the three canonical DLCs until very late - so that the loot is fully levelled - has the inconvenient side effect that you have to do most of the treaty missions without that stuff. Spirit Healers may covet the Boots of Casting One More Spell (Warden Commander boots, Keep) and Cailan's Arms (RtO), for example, and there's a lot of other useful kit.

With the Dryden brothers' complicity and a bit of cash the loot scaling problem can be eliminated, and the money can be recovered by brewing potent lyrium pots for sale. Same principle for generic weapons and armour.

That would make Cadash Thaig pretty much the only mission where loot quality (level) might influence the decision about when to do it.

@ Mike: just checked by making a save on Bann Loren's lands, so that I could play with 'runscript levelparty' before transitioning to Ostagar. Cailan's kit was red steel up to level 17, silverite for 18 and 19, and dragonbone from level 20 on. Some of the generic loot went to dragonbone earlier. However, these results are not necessarily representative since the loot levelling might involve a random fudge factor here, as is the case with merchants.

Reason I suggested RtO, and not the others. I always get Shale and Warden's Keep after Lothering, but leave RtO until later, esp if Loghain joins the ranks.

You can visit the quartermaster without getting locked in, that only happens when go past the big double doors.

That merchant has some really good stuff, which makes him - though not necessarily the Broken Circle - one of only three non-negotiable post-Lothering shopping stops for all my toons (the other two being Bodahn and the Wonders of Thedas).

You can do it, yes.

To me it just seems wrong that you wouldn't want to deal with the impending Annullment right then and there. It is similar to the: "do I really have time to go to the Circle while not dealing with Connor's demon" conundrum. Consequently, I never take the ferry to the tower unless I intend to do Broken Circle.

The OP asked whether it could be done, not whether you approve.

I usually put off soldier's peak until after level 18 and RtO is a nice break between the Landsmeet and endgame for me, so I usually get the highest tier available.  I still only ever put either the WC armor or Cailan's armor on Alistair, though, and I like the appearance and stats for the WC armor better.  It just doesn't feel right equipping anyone else other than Alistair or the warden with it, though, and I almost never play warriors who would get any use out of massive armor.

I'm really intrigued by these "one-more-spell" boots of which you speak.  Can you elaborate?  PM me if you think it's cluttering the thread.

Warden Commander's Boots-they add +50 mana-in case Darth is offline. 50 mana will usually cover one more spell-it depends on your fatigue. I prefer Cailan's Greaves myself for the 20% dodge.

Thanks, Mike.  I never honestly thought to put heavy or massive armor on a spellcaster, but I'll try it.  The mana bonus should offset the fatigue nicely.
