I remember having this discussion years ago and I'm pretty sure every fellow nerd has had this discussion before at least once if they were ever into D&D.

But if we were to compare locations of Faerun to locations on Earth how would it appear?

Obviously Maztica is mesoAmerica

Moonshae Isles = Caribbean?

Neverwinter = Great Britain?

Waterdeep/Baldurs Gate = French Normandy?

Amn = Spain?

What about the Dalelands or Mulsantir?

 What about Halruua? And did Zelda rip D&D off on that or what? The enclosed mountain ranges vaguely resemble the Nintendo map and then there is the name Halruua or Hyrule.

Anyway, I was interested in hearing anyone elses thoughts

I used to associate Rashemen with Russia, mostly due to Minsc, and the similarity in the name.  May not have anything to do with it, really.  I sort of like it better to think of them as entirely foreign countries rather than simple analogues of Earth.

Mulhorand = Ancient Egypt

Moonshaes = Great Britain

Kara-Tur = Asia

Within Kara-Tur:

Shou Lung = China

Wa & Kozakura = Japan

Koryo = Korea

I thought this thread was going to be about wizards vs tanks.

A tank would destroy a wizard, Kamal. There is no debate there. More ammo than spells! lol!

I learned something new about the Moonshae Isles.

Arkalezth, I'm interested in why that link said that Thay is similar to Egypt. I was kind of imagining it as possibly being similar to Armenia or some of the dryer climates between the Black Sea and Caspian sea.

I like what Tchos said by sort of leaving it to the imagination. I think that's why I like Silverymoon and the Silver Marches. That is where I envision a traditional fantasy setting with unicorns and the whole bit.

But where the heck is Damara? according to that link it's supposed to be like Germany? I kind of imagine some of the small human settlements in the Dalelands to resemble small Bavarian countryside towns and farming communities... Maybe Ashebenford?

Actually that list states that the Moonshae isles are  Celtic its Mulhorand that it says is Egypt

Sorry, I skipped around on that last post.

What I meant was I learned something new about the moonshae isles, that they are Celtic rather than Caribbean.

Thay is Egyptian which I thought Thay of more of a similar geological makeup of Armenia.

Maybe the red wizards are like egyptian priests? Not sure. But it appears Mulorand is egyptian as is probably the Anarouch desert.

The Anauroch is the Bedouin tribes from Earth. The tribesmen in the Anauroch are even called Bedine.

No idea why they think Thay is Egypt. Mulhorand is definitely Egypt, the lore even says the people and gods were transported there magically from Earth.

I'd always thought of Cormyr as the Faerunian Medieval France.

The Dalelands, culturally, are probably closest to colonial America.  They are very independent minded and look after their own affairs, and generally disfavor the idea of a centralized, unifying authority.
