This is what I want in regards to the race gated romance options

I want two features to accompany race gating romances;

First and foremost, I want the romances in question to be up front and honest about the fact that their reason for not being interested in romancing the restricted inquisitors is the inquisitor's race and whatever reasoning is behind that.

And secondly, when playing as a race that is compatible with the restricted romance, I want the ability to reject said LI and to explicitly tell them that their race is the reason for that.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Morrigan never told me why she wasn't available for romance. The same for Miranda and Tali.

Aveline never told me why she wasn't interested in me.

I want to know why we suddenly need detailed explanations for someone not banging the PC.

Romances begin when you flirt with companions. Why are you flirting with them if you're not interested in their race?

Yeah, that would be sweet, but they probably won't have NPCs flirting with the PC or trying to initiate a romance on their own.  Not after the uproar DA2's companions caused... but I could be wrong about that, as I haven't been keeping up with all the recent news.

Personally I always thought there should have been the option to make advances on Morrigan and Alistair as a woman and man respectively and get shot down. That Leliana and Zevran can make advances on my straight wardens in and of itself doesn't bother me, but that my gay wardens don't get to do the same, that does bother me.

As for that last point, people advocating race restrictions preach realism and believably. The inquisitor being the only one to ever make a romantic advance isn't realistic or believable.

It's not entirely without precedent, either. Anders, of course, makes an advance on Hawke. Ash made an advance on my Shepard in ME3 despite having never been in a relationship with her.

If people want this feature to give the companions some agency, then I would like the companions to actually show some agency.

It feels like you just want to throw racism back in their face.  ****** for tat, eye for an eye, etc...

I really don't like this attitude, if someone doesn't isn't attracted to the aesthetics of a certain race and doesn't want to pursue a romance  because of it it doesn't make them racist. There can be many other good reasons as well but this what I feel is this most common gripe.

I was speculating on the purpose behind the OP's desires, not referencing my own beliefs on what does or does not constitute racism.

They don't (often) have a very good list of "no thanks" type options, but I kind of like this idea.  Why restrict it to only the gated romances, though.  They should just let you go "ew" at anyone if that's what you want to do.  I want a "sorry, I don't do my employees" option, personally.  And I also want them to get mad at me if I do one of my other "employees" after giving an excuse like that.  Unfortunately, that degree of interactivity in a very minor part of the game is probably not going to happen.

Won't happen. Romances have to be initiated by the player. Why would you flirt with someone to start a romance and then later get the option to turn them down because of their race?

To an extent, yes. I want the agency to be able to treat them the same way they treat me.

While I'm sympathetic to players who don't want race-gating in the game (I am not crazy about it myself), I guess I'm not really understanding how a gesture of retaliatory (fantasy) racism is an example of "what's good for the goose is good for the gander," particularly when the proverbial goose is virtual (the character) and the gander (the player behind the PC) is not. Can you clarify?

You might flirt with them by accident.

Basically, they're asking for Character Agency to go sidelong with Player Agency. Which really is awesome. I -personally- loved that even if you never flirted with Anders he kind of fell in love with you anyway if you weren't a dick. It gave him a really awesome facet to his character by enforcing that he liked people who weren't jerks, regardless of what was in their pants. Unfortunately it didn't go over well with some folks. (understatement of the year! *throws confetti*)

In that same vein, they're asking race-gated romances who get to go "ey you're cute and all but I'm not into <race>" also in turn be able to be on the receiving end of that. Which kind of comes off as petty. But who's to say your Human PC just really isn't into other Humans?

Though to be fair for that to work AT ALL, the NPC's need to initiate the flirtation, which would then give them far more Agency. Any other way and it's just a useless option with no real value.

And again, Character Agency is AWESOME -- but more then likely folks are going to be ANNOYED at the fact that X character DARED to flirt with them with out first allowing the Player to express interest. It feels like removal of Player Agency, even if it's not.

Flirting doesn't necessarily indicate interest in a relationship.

Flirting doesn't necessarily indicate interest in a relationship.

In real life? No not at all.

In a video game? Flirting becomes a game mechanic to indicate interest in a relationship. It's just the easiest route to travel in terms of game mechanics. Flirt = Interest.

Mind you that's not always the case either. In DA2 you could flirt with everyone (except dragons, why can't I flirt with the dragons!?), right up until a point, and then ROMANCE HAPPENS and occasionally said romance happening shuts down all other flirting.

I much prefer it that way too. I'm a flirt. I enjoy flirting but 99.99% of the time I have zero interest in doing anything more then flirting for the sake of funzies. So being able to openly flirt with the universe TO A POINT is always my favorite thing.

But yeah, generally speaking, if there's a flirt option, more then likely it's indicating interest. And if that's the case, in that context, flirting with someone only to tell them you're not into them is kind of a dick move :P

I thought people loved having the option to be a dick, though.

One of the 'no' options should include the dreaded F word, complete with crushing disappointment.

I loved Aveline but going through two acts of assuming I can romance her and ending my string of heart choices with a heartbreak one was just far to much for me, my first playthrough of DA2 ties for my most tragic playthrough of that game... or more on topic it strikes me weirdly teasing that you should play as whatever race or gender to sleep with someone...

bad idea I think...probably will be done though.
