If somebody was looking to start playing NWN2 for the first time, but wanted a much better graphical, auditory, and game play experience than the original 1.23 patched package, what definitive pack of ten mods would you most recommend?

I'm thinking perhaps of mods like the following:

There's a list here that sound pretty decent.

Any thoughts?

I always include the subdued weapon visual effects in my modules. Although I've since redone the flaming weapon effect using some of the better fire textures included in the expansions.

I actually don't use any of these as a player, because I just accept the game as it was. However I can see why one would want all of these, and every now and then I get the itch to download them. I do though use the facelift pack for creating my NPCs, but I have the compilation NENs final face head hair combination project.

Maybe Tchos' panels as well are missing from that list. Not the linked, but yours :D.

Well, a solid package of player improvement mods could be good for those who like to grumble about the appearance of the original content. There's quite a lot of possibilities.

I'm using the top 3 on your list along with Tchos' UI improvements and Xaltars' Facelift. All are must-have packages for me.

I think the big hurdle with getting people to pick up NWN2 is ameliorating the common grumbles. UI, camera and NPC appearances often being the first to be raised. List the recommended improvements to these and then selling the idea that after the initial purchase there is hours upon hours of games to play of all varieties, we may see more new players. I hope so anyway.

I think showing people quality 3rd party content is something that could help NWN2. I think there are probably a lot of people who played it when it was released, played the expansions, and then put it on the shelf (I count myself among those). They have no idea that people are still creating content for it - and good content.

Fact is, this is really the best and only engine for D&D. That alone is going to give it some longevity. And I don't see anything on the horizon to threaten it.

I love Less Obtrusive Spell Buffs (thanks for posting it today!).  I'm not sure if this was incorporated into other packages that you listed above, but this is a wonderful thing to have in your override:

Yes, I liked the idea the first time I saw it.

A concept I had in the back of my mind was some type of well-tested "super-pack" that's very easy for a novice player to install, and would apply a shopping list of popular enhancements (and patch fixes) to the commercial modules. Nothing like a romance pack or a change to SoZ-style party management; just popular bells and whistles that improve the overall standard game play experience. If we had a common set like that, and if it was steadily maintained, it would also be very easy to point a new player toward that when making recommendations. (Or to address common concerns.)

I'm not the person to do this though because I haven't played enough of the campaigns or tried many of the mods. :)

All that's in my override is Always Summer and some wild hair style ones and they haven't moved out of there for years so I guess they're my must haves...

I play most mods whit Kaedrins pack and Xaltars Facelift pack, i think i should go for TonyK pack aswell (now the question: tonyk works whit kaedrins pack? ) .

That's the problem with creating any kind of super-pack for new users - some of this stuff is just incompatible. For instance, if you want to use Kaedrin's PRC, you have to first check that the mod in question even supports it. It's a little bit of work to make Kaedrin's work with a 3rd party mod, so not every author takes the time to make it work.

Having a list, however, is a great idea. I wish I'd have seen something similar for Skyrim the first time I went to play it. Wasn't until after I finished the game I found the mods... But that didn't diminish playing through the game a few more times with all the good mods installed :)

I use (I might be forgetting something, but I think it's just this):

- Tchos' stuff.

- Metaprepa (rod of buffing).

- Xaltar's faces.

- TonyK's AI (to Vis: Yes, it works with Kaedrin's).

- Warlock buddy, if I play a warlock.

- Some kind of reduced visual effects from buffs mod (I use one I got from a PW, so I can't share it).

- Lite UI (I use a few parts from other UI mods, but I think most are from this one).

If I were to make a super-pack, I would only include the essential... and that wouldn't be much. Stuff like Kaedrin's pack or UI mods are not something that everyone is going to like. IIRC, even Xaltar's pack replaces some faces (instead of adding new ones on top), so some people might miss some of the replaced ones. Hell, some people even dislike using a rod to skip the buff dance. The only mod I see no possible issue at all with is TonyK's.

It might make sense then to have a configuration interface that lets you enable or disable different mods. But that would need to be Windows scripted, I think.

Pain's Neverlauncher was going to be able to do that. There's probably already code in there for it.

"Was going to be". Does that mean that it's no longer in the works?

Haven't had a Pain sighting in some time.

My person favorites:

-Kaedrin's Pack: Extra races, classes, spells, feats, fixes and stuff. Not compatible with Reeron's or other class/spell packs.

-Tony K's AI: Must have - improves your own companions and enemies less stupid and more challenging

-Tchos HD UI: Bigger sheets for everything

-Appearance Changer: If you don't like that pink robe on your evil drow for example.

-Xaltar's Facelift: If you want an easy overhaul of the NPCs and PCs faces. Otherwise, some other head/hair pack.

-Reduced Spell Effects: I included the ones that remove Stoneskins/Barkskins etc also and the Improved Mirror Image.

-Cute Cleaves: To add a small visual effect for AoO or Cleaves.

-Alternate Female Casting Voice (or whatever it's called): Changes the female casting animations to a woman's than a girl's.

-And another small mod that changes your main screen to Mask of the Betrayer, with it's theme, as well as a different level up background screen (the blue forest one).

If you are talking about enhancing the commercial releases - specifically the OC and MotB - then I of course recommend the OC Makeover and MotB Makeover.  I never leave home without them.

If you are talking about things that would be useful for modders then I released the SoZ Crafting Plus system that makes it very easy to add SoZ Crafting to your module and fixes most of the bugs without requiring changes to the standard 2das or blueprints. Personally i don't care much for crafting, but it was one of the most requested features when I was working on the Makeovers so I know a lot of players do like it.

Also, unless Kaedrin is going to release his code again I wouldn't recommend including it in any kind of uber-pack. Just my opinion.

This pack looks like the best of the available combination hakpacks from before the fall of the Vault. Perhaps it might be useful for module testing purposes? But, based on some of the feedback above, it could be improved upon. Perhaps it we had one combo pack for improved game play and a second for visual enhancements....

I use this one:

http://neverwinterva...ced-hit-effects

Which combines the subdued weapon visuals with reduced explosions on hit.

Then I reduce the the explosion size a lot more, and removed the sound, so I don't hear and see fireballs when I hit something with elemental weapons. Now it just sounds like a sword and there is a tiny burst of elemental effect.

A bit off topic, but does anyone know if there's a version of the face lift pack with the new faces set as additional options rather than overrides of the existing ones? The only thing that's stopped me from using it in the past is that I actually like some of the ones it removes.

I second that question. I've seen them added to the existing ones in some servers, so it's technically possible, but I'd like a version that worked like that for single player as well.

I don't know of one, but you can do it using MDB Cloner and copying a head GR2 file to a new file with the same name as the new head number.  I think I recall instructions for doing so in the comments for the file.
