Has a character death ever knocked the wind out of you?

Now this is a little off topic, it's not NECESSARILY Dragon Age related, but it can be if it applies to a death in the Dragon Age franchise.

So, in all cinematic works there are characters that we become rather fond of and attached to. Sometimes, certain events dictate that character dies, and it really undescribable what we feel during that moment.

I don't know about some of you, maybe you never feel anything towards fictional characters, but I know some have. Especially considering the attachment some of you on the BSN forums form with Dragon Age/Mass Effect characters lol.

Has a ficitional character death, across all cinematic/entertainment, ever just stun you? To the point of being petrified or being in tears?

DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO SPOILER TAGS SO YEAH SPOILERS FOR THE WALKING DEAD AND CONKER'S BAD FUR DAY BELOW

The Walking Dead (comic)

I'll admit, in The Walking Dead comic series when Glenn dies, that really f**ked me up. The context of the situation, the attachment I felt towards his character, and the actual gruesome killing of him, it just really knocked the f**king wind out of me. Been two years since that scene and I'm still not over it! I don't think I'll ever be. Moments like that, you don't just forget those. Every time it pops back into my head, it just stuns me all over again. It's incredible the effect/manipulation a fictional story can have on you.

Conker's Bad Fur Day

Also, from long ago, Conker's Bad Fur Day. In the end when Conker's girlfriend, Cherry dies, that really upset me. Not necessarily because I liked her character a lot, but because of how Conker felt. Despite the entire journey and the persona of his character, the entire game he's really just trying to get home to see her, and she dies quite brutally before his eyes. In the end game sequence, when he becomes King, he doesn't even care that he's now the most powerful animal in this "exotic" kingdom, because he doesn't feel the will to keep going considering he's lost what's most important to him. Those final lines of "you just don't realize what you have til it's gone, all gone." really stunned me. A feeling I did not seem coming, considering the nature of the game.

Mass Effect 3 (synthesis ending)

Really not much to say. Terrible ending. However I still get really sad whenever I see the final sequence of Shepard's organic code being broken down and absorbed. Watching him/her deteriorate, it gives me some serious feels. Looks like he/she is in such pain too.

Duncan in DAO; did not see that coming, as I expected to get further instructions from my leader and co-star from the Origin. Calian was as good as dead when Loghain offered that snarky comment, but Duncan took me by surprise.

Wash in Serenity; as stunned as JW wanted me to be.

Mass Effect 3: Thane and Mordin's death were very emotional and honestly I've never been so sad playing a game. It reached emotional levels of some really good movies for me because I was so invested in these characters.

Now in Dragon Age: Inquisition Bioware will need to have majors balls to pull off a Leliana or Morrigan death... These message boards might actually explode.

Sweet Iona.  Sweet nothings and she takes two to the chest.  My nekkid warden didn't take it kindly.  To quote Sin City "I'm  on my feet and every ounce of me wants to get some killing done."

Alistair in DA:O (my Warden intended to sacrifice herself, but he didn't let her), plus Mordin in ME3.  I still feel the impact of those deaths!  Amazingly rich writing brought those character arcs to stunning culminations.  You can imagine my delight that Patrick Weekes is now working with the DA team.

Shepard's.  In all three "endings."  I don't count the fourth ending as an ending because it was really Bioware just giving us the middle finger.  All three endings were basically Shepard committing suicide.   I dare not say more because I was banned by Chris Priestly on the ME 3 forums for apparently having a negative opinion on such things.

The most recent time that a character death affected me was when I recently replaying XCOM:  Enemy Within.  It has permadeath for the squad members and I was playing it on a harder difficulty with the autosave feature on.  I had a really kickass soldier who I loved.  She was a killer:  a fully upgraded psionic medic who had an amazing aim attribute; by far my favorite character.  Well, I was approaching the end game and was getting a bit "comfortable".  I just made a mistake of moving her just too far and she attracted several enemies.  In one turn, she went from full health to dead (not even wounded....dead).  I was gutted and turned the game off.  In fact, I started a whole new game because I was so upset that I lost her that I didn't want that story to go on without her.  It feels silly because she was a randomly generated soldier.  RIP, Denisha "Missionary" Hangawa........

Mordin in Mass Effect really shocked me. And Sully's 'death' in Uncharted had me freaking out too.

To be honest those things don't shock me, I like it when one dies and if it is done well I love it.

The ending of ME3. Not in a bad way, but some serious serious feels throughout that whole thing.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 ending. Came absolutely out of nowhere, or so it seemed (it was actually foreshadowed excellently), and totally threw me.

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, when Blackbeard dies. The first time I played it, it was night and it was raining (in the game--not sure if this happens everytime). The fight scene is very emotional leading up to it, and his death totally shocked me. I felt similarly about Mary. When Edward was carrying her, I was saying to myself, "please don't die, please don't die."

Mordin was touching. I was a bit of, not a huge one, a Mordin fan, and I found it touching.

Probably more, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Hawke's mother, definitely. I was shocked and horrified by the necromancer.

Edit: Lambert's death in Splinter Cell Conviction, compounded by who killed him (it's a choice, but really only one is feasible for the situation).

Edit: like others have said, Thane. Really liked the prayer.

And Miranda--Miri's death bothered me to the point that I stopped playing, went back and found out how to keep her alive.

I concur with all the feels for Thane and Mordin's deaths, and the very first time Hawke's mother dies (don't hate! ;) ).  After that, well... I just got mad. ;)

DA:2 - It wasn't necessarily a death, but a culmination of events - by the time that Bodhan tells Hawke that he and Sandal are going to go to Orlais, after losing pretty much everything else, the Hawke Family theme playing, Hawke wandering around his almost empty house...I got a major sad...

Just for BioWare games: Mordin was one, for the reasons why some of the others have listed.  The other was Thane.  Now, even without reading spoilers, I had a feeling he was going to die in ME3.  It just broke me, because I've had to say good bye to friends and family just like that when they were passing on from a terminal illness.

If I listed the other games outside of the company that did that to me, this would be an extremely long post.

The one I think that hit me worst was Hawke's mom. I cried. Felt very heavy for a long time. That one affected me, was tough to kinda pull out of.

I'm sure I have other video game deaths that got me, but not as bad as Hawke's mom.

(Bioware's worst hit for me overall was mission Priority: Thessia, but that was for the planet not a specific character. That was me throwing my controller on the ground in a rage and screaming and crying angry tears.)

ME1 - The Kaiden/Ashley choice, I sat there going back and forth over their names with the cursor for a while.

FF VII - Aeris/Aerith, I never saw that coming, me and my best friend were just sitting their silent.  I was younger than though.

Xenosaga III - Jin, he went out like a champ though, this one was the worse one.  Probably my favorite video game trilogy ever.

The Last of us - Won't say the name in case they're people who still haven't played that one

And honestly Shepard in ME2, I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have that part spoiled for me pre release.

Buffy's mom - shocked

Optimus Prime (in the original movie) - devastated as a child.

Ironhide, Prowl, Ratchet and Brawn's deaths (in the same Transformer's movie) - horrified as a child, damn you Megatron!

Wash in Firefly - shocked

Gandalf (though, of course, he did not die) - surprised

Drew Barrymore in the first Scream - surprised (kinda "Psycho" style killing where you don't expect such a prominent actress to bite it)

@Texhnolyze101:  For the same reason an existent being would.  Just remember, Santa Claus will be remember LONG after you and I have been forgotten by the entire human population.  Being existent is really not that important.

Fallout.  The original one.

The dog was named Dogmeat.  Meant for one purpose:  to get you past a shield in the endgame.  I hear that even today there are people who still try to save their favourite pooch!  The Devs were totally surprised by that....

Leandra Hawke's death wasn't 100% unexpected given the quest line. I had hoped maybe I could save her at the last second heroically, but man it was pretty sad.

Duncan was kind of disappointing too, I figured maybe he'd die down the line in the game, but they had managed to do a good job of developing his character in a short time and it sucked when he died.
