Has a character death ever knocked the wind out of you?

The only death that I really felt upset about is Aerith's death in FFVII and that's because she's an awesome spell-caster! You have to use her so much to get her final LB before she dies, I never really had anyone to replace her afterwards :(

No one really died in Dragon Age that we played with, unless you personally kill them like in Origins (then they are brought back to life in the next game/book).

It would really only upset me if they were as useful to the party as Aerith was.

I agree on Aeris. That the devs of FF7 had the guts to kill her off made FF7 even better (it was already fantastic) because it was so unexpected and gave an even deeper want to chase down sephiroth/Jenova coupled with the emotional sorrow it led to.

They basicly did a George RR. Martin and stepped out of the "RAINBOWS EVERYWHERE SUPER HAPPY GAME WITH LOVE ENDING FOR EVERYONE<33" and made the story more "real". Like the FF7 dev said, (paraphrased) "Real life has loss, we wanted to make the gamers feel that".

Edit: Which is why I really hope Bioware has some bad decision makings leading to the deaths of our companions. If all companions has invulnerable plot armor through the entire game - then that is bad writing. Im not talking about killing off characters just to do it. But as Ive said before - my opinion is that a game is only measured in quality and success based on how much you can fail and how tragic the ending can be.

If I complete DA:I with all companions alive regardless of my actions - then the story is poorly written, simple as that.

Even a tragic ending can have some happiness in it (in some small way). I think of the ending of King Lear when I say that however, yes the main characters die but the king regains his former self and sanity and he gets to spend eternity with his family :)

I still let loose anguished groans of 'Legion'.  I loved that stupid robot.

I can add another moment that gave manly tears, Wheel of Time again (am listening to the audio books again atm) it's not a death, but a Moment of Awesome and Heartwarming all in one:

“Lan told me once that Malkier lives so long as one man wears the hadori in pledge that he will fight the Shadow, so long as one woman wears the ki’sain in pledge that she will send her sons to fight the Shadow. I wear the ki’sain, Master Aldragoran. My husband wears the hadori. So do you. Will Lan Mandragoran ride to the Last Battle alone?”

He was laughing, shaking with it. And yet, he could feel tears  rolling down his cheeks. It was madness! Complete madness! But he could not help himself. “He will not, my Lady. I cannot stand surety for anyone else, but I swear to you under the Light and by my hope of rebirth and salvation, he will not ride alone.”

“Well, Managan, Gorenellin,” he demanded, “do you still remember who you are? Do you remember your blood? Who rides with me for Tarwin’s Gap?”

For a moment, he thought neither man would speak, but then Gorenellin was on his feet, tears glistening in his eyes. “The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai’don,” he said softly.

“The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai’don!” Managan shouted, leaping up so fast he overturned his chair.

Laughing, Aldragoran joined them, all three shouting at the top of their lungs. “The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai’don!”

Bioshock Infinite:

Spoiler

The correct thing to do here would have been to label the spoiler as "Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea". I've played Bioshock Infinite, but not Burial at Sea, and now I'm spoiled. Yay.

In my first ME3 playthrough I accidentally chose control. That was terrible to watch. Shepard had fought her way to save Earth only to jump into that beam and get utterly disintegrated. But the entire ME3 ending was terribly depressing.

Mordin's death didn't knock the wind out of me, but it was pretty painful. I loved that Salarian.

I quoted a post that said "Burial at Sea :spoiler: with my own spoiler tagged post. Frankly if it wasn't obvious what my own spoiler tag was about whatever BaS spoiler the person I quoted was talking about, you can only blame yourself for not thinking before clicking to read my post. I mean come on, that could not have been more blatant that my own post was also about Bas.

On the topic of FF7, I found Zack's death in Crisis Core very heartbreaking. I mean, playing the game I knew he'd die because if you played FF7, you're aware that he has passed, but even then, the final cinematic where he sacrifices himself to defend cloud to the very end was just heart wrenching. I still can't watch the scene without getting a little bit emotional. Other than that, video game deaths never really affected me surprisingly. It's mostly TV shows and movies that elicit feelings from me.

I have strong reactions to a lot of character deaths, but had the wind knocked out? Not as many.

Chopper from Ace Combat 5 comes to mind. So does Carley.

The first time Toad told me that the Princess was in another castle, I questioned the meaning of life itself. I was so devastated, it was a life altering moment. I traveled to the Amazon to consult a shaman and we indulged in Ayahuasca together.

Sarah from Last of Us.

Surprisingly enough even Campo and Matkovic in Battlefield 3.

So I left the Urn of Sacred ashes until the last quest. Me and Wynne and Lelianna and Zevran were the dream team of darkspawn.

....Then I defiled the ashes.

I literally yelled 'WHAT THE F*CK, COME ON ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME' at the TV. Next time, I thought by NOT taking them to the Urn I could get around it, but apparently Wynne is psychic. More yelling followed.

Sure not knocking wind worthy...but infuriating nonetheless.

Can someone explain why Legion's death had such a big effect on them?

I think Legion is one (or hundreds) of the best characters in the series, but I guess his death didn't affect me much because I didn't really understood why he had to die. They say he had to sacrifice himself, but do they ever explain why?

I haven't played ME3 for a long while but I think it was something along the lines of only he was able to spread the upgrade code out to all of the Geth and it would somehow assimilate him into all of them so that they began the journey to becoming truly alive.

*Spoiler Alert* These games are out for years now, so I'm not going to shy away.

Sgt. Johnson, Halo 3. This death didn't really made me sad or fall into depression, but I still felt pretty bad and thought it was a real shame he died. Fine bastard survived so many things. Such a shame he dies to a pesky little AI.

Lee and Omid, The Walking Dead. Both these fine chaps died in such shameful ways that I felt quite sad (especially Lee).

Mordin. Damn, that one hurt for the remainder of the day...

hawke's mother, exactly the same, I was REALLY mad at that cursed blood mage (and my main reason for now being more templarishy-sided).

The end of TWD season 1 game. I actually cried.

^^Bingo

He couldn't transmit the reaper virus to other geth. So he had to distribute his units (all 1183) across the network and thus "died" as an individual. But tiny bits of him survive throughout the remaining geth, but he becomes apart of their programming so it's not truly him. Think of it similarly to the way synthesis works with Shepard but with only synthetics. Hopefully that makes sense lol.

This is the only death in a game where I didn't know what to feel just stunned.
