Because you're human and have a soul that feels emotion? Or maybe not.

Not for fake characters that aren't real I don't.

Wait, you want to experience that heart break in real life? Some one you care for has to die, you know.

Everyone has to die someday.

That whole show is like sitting through a year-long winter where everyday it snows five feet.  I just...I can't take that **** anymore.

Kaidan Alenko. Mass Effect 3, end of it all... I thought we were doing so good, and I brought him on the final mission to see if we could you know, win together. We promised we'd see eachother after or something too I think...

BAM. Reaper Laser. Destroyed him (And EDI, but she didn't really die just her robot) and I was just like.... devastated. I just saw him get incinerated... That's not supposed to happen, HOT GUYS SHOULDN'T DIE. It just doesn't happen. Anyways, I'm starting to think of Oberyn Martell now... even worse.

Not in any of the Dragon Age games. One bad thing about this game is that there's a totally new protagonist and a new set of supporting characters every game. I can't get emotionally invested on characters I just met.

But in the Mass Effect series - Thane, Mordin, Tali (if you go down that path), and Shepard in the endings where he dies. And EDI. Poor EDI.

Hmm. Not many characters in BioWare games provoke much emotion.

Shepard's death at the end of ME3. I felt so betrayed after losing an avatar I'd played so many hours over so many games over several years with.

I generally take good care off my companions but in my first playthrough of ME2 Tali died. Had to start over.

Outside of BioWare, Janet Fraiser's death in SG-1 just knocked the wind right out of me. I'd quietly grown fond of that character over the years.

Further back, Aeris/Aerith's death. Just didn't see it coming.

And of course when I was a kid. Tasha Yar in ST:TNG.

Mordin's death literally made me cry. Mostly because of how he was singing at the end and then just...boom. Same thing with Legion, when he asks Tali 'Does this unit have a soul?'

Some people play the game for the immersion that comes with the story.  Some people play for the numbers and winning.  Those who feel, and it's valid to, grow an attachment to a character(s) or a situation.  That's why we feel and, yes, it's as valid that we do as it is for those who do not and play just for the win.

Me?  If the win comes at the end of an immersive story... bonus! :)

First play through of ME3 ended with Tali doing a last of the mohican right of the cliff, that was of the back of something like just over 500 hours of game time in me1 n 2 doing various play throughs to import, the result was me deciding to have a wee ly down

I would hardly call that surviving.   It certainly gave no closure.  But oh well.

Fictional characters? No.

The only time I got close was the end of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway.

Although, when a certain *sort* of character dies I can get sensitive due to the fact that it reopens old wounds that still haven't healed...

Carley/Doug's death in The Walking Dead Game shocked me, as did Snow White's "death" initially in TWAU. Lee's death was shocking, but more-so sad. In Dragon Age 2, I was pretty shocked by Leandra's death, but more at how grotesque it was, though it was saddening. The death of the Red Faction leader in Red Faction: Guerrilla was also pretty surprising. Besides those, I really can't think of any character death that legitimately surprised me in any other video game. Most I saw coming, and/or didn't effect me regardless.

Obviously, Shepard in ME3.  I still haven't forgiven Bioware for that kick in the quad.

But if you're asking about NPCs:

Yeah Leandra in DA2.  To the point where I seriously wondered why Hawke doesn't have the option to leave Kirkwall afterwards.  I know I wouldn't want to live there anymore after that.

Carley/Doug in The Walking dead.  Not ashamed to say I went back and tried every possible option to avoid that.

Yoshimo in BG2.  Couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy.

Alpha Protocol, Madison Saint James, if you let her die.  Poor girl was only trying to help and got in way over her head.

Pfft, after Thane died in ME3, not because it was sad but because it was horrible written and his character essentially existed to die. I angrily cried for two hours and then didn't touch the game again for two days. The whole game was unpleasantly, emotionally draining. I have never in my life felt so put off by a game's story that I wanted to take multiple breaks to escape it. I finished ME2 in two days, ME3 took me two long weeks.

These days if I attempt to replay ME3, just to try to give it a fresh, no-fan-hyped look, I just stop playing just before the Cerberus Coup. Still have not experienced that extended cut and I don't want to waste my money on the DLC. I only keep the game installed because at least the gameplay was fun and I can always experience that without the story with multiplayer.

Otherwise, I don't typically cry too much over character deaths, sure feel sad but I can't recall a time of being full on tears.

I noticed a lot of people are saying Shepard's death. For me, that part cracked me up, cause first, I had a long running theory someone on the Bioware team had been applying a Jesus Christ trope, so when Shepard's body lifted into the sky I knew something stupid was about to happen. Then second, she technically died on me twice before I made a choice because I was laughing so hard and couldn't make up my mind on what final choice to make. Yeah, there's a time limit at that part apparently and you can fail saving the galaxy because you took too long to make a choice. I remember saying, "This is what people are so pissed about? This is so dumb, these choices are sucky and dumb." I actually ended up logging on the internet and asking my friends for the end results because I just couldn't figure out what was the least stupid choice.

Ned stark. I was all like "did the main character(of that season) really just die?"

Issue 100 of the walking dead was a good one too...

Edit: oh, the red viper too. I totally matched tyrion's expression.
