Has a character death ever knocked the wind out of you?

One of the more shocking death in videogames was Kat from Halo Reach ( at least for me). Shot through the head in mid sentense. And pretty much the whole Noble Team death was hard for me.

Also Thane and Shepard in ME3. And with Renegade Shep Mordin/Padok Wiks and Wrex.

In Dragon Age there wasn't any charcter death, but the end of DA2 was pretty shocking for my first playthrough. I'm talking about Anders blowing up the Chantry.

If we're talking about BioWare games, then no. Although, I mean, I saw it coming, but I was still a bit shocked when my Spirit Monk died. I wasn't in tears or anything of the sort over it, though...plus we get to revive ourselves afterwards.

In other media is a different story, though. The most recent would be a character who died by arrow in Game of Thrones, not going to say the name because that would be a spoiler. Though my reaction was stronger when I'd read it in the books a few years ago. So I knew it was coming in the show, too, but I was hoping they'd rewrite that. ^^

Notable others would be what happened to Cole at the end of Charmed season 4 and Elle in Heroes. I actually stopped watching the shows for a while after that. It's a good thing there is fanfiction. ;-)

I found Samara a bit sad.
Rigid code she chooses to follow her entire life, giving up her dreams and hopes after her children she had intended to raise, cherish, and care for be born as Ardat-Yakshi. Her bondmate either dead or abandoned her. Her children isolated and barely ever seeing them again.

She took a stand to see justice in the Universe, and even fought her daughter time and time again, admiring her as she grew up, made her decisions even if they were impulsive and became her own person for hundreds of years. It was an abnormal way of seeing your daughter grow up, a sick-sense of pride in her accomplishments. But knowing she's evil, because of her very nature, and what she's done to so many is horrific on scales beyond comprehension.

Then witnessing the death of her own daughter in selfless sacrifice, knowing the very code that dictated her life and gave her reason when she found nothing to live for. She was willing to die for her daughter. And it's only because of Shepard's paragon interruption, she can live for her last daughter instead.

Oh shame on me, I forgot Little Foot's Ma's death in A Land Before Time. I watched it only once as a kid because I could not take it. And when I watched it again as a big girl it still filled my heart with great sorrow and my eyes with salty water.

Oberyn Martell. Still a bit bitter that they downplayed just how much he effed up the mountain during that fight scene. Even if it's post-death, Oberyn really does get the last laugh.

I was pissed off immensely when Morinth died in ME3 due to bioware not wanting to spend any resources to develop the character. But even not including her in the game at all would be miles better than the only content being seeing her corpse.

Hey,

First is Stargate:

Dr. Janet Fraiser :( that was bad (and she never came back, like other characters did)

ME3 (one of the few things gone right with this game):

Thane Krios and Mordin Solus *cries*

and from a book I read (a german book - from a german science fiction book series):

Marshall (or General/Admiral (a mix of the two with further privileges) - called a "Wer" by his people) Dro Cimc (just liked that character, as his races were/are douchebags (more or less) with only few exceptions)

(and a lot more, those were just recent ones I was sad about...there's others I don't much like, but I would not shed tears about)

greetings LAX

They did not down played it. They just haven't shown it yet.

Quite a couple. The only one where I've wept openly was Lee Scoresby from the His Dark Materials-trilogy, but then I was quite young when I read that the first time

Aerith's death still gets me, even when I know it's coming. It's just so well executed.

The ending of Halo Reach. The final fight where your only objective is survive. And you know you can't. The rest of Noble Team as well.

Isara in Valkyria Chronicles. And just when everyone seemed to be doing ok as well...

the Protagonist in Persona 3.

Dom's death in Gears of War 3. Especially when Mad World started playing.

I was shocked when Alvin shot Leia in Tales of Xillia. Of course, she didn't die, but I didn't know that first!

I think those are the ones I can remember of the top of my head.

Jorge's death in Halo Reach actually made me man cry, Achillies dying in Assassin's creed 3 also took the wind from my sails. Mass Effect has had me bawling like a wee babe many times now, Dragon Age never had any deaths that bother me enough to consider shocking.

Just in Bioware games, and this is something they've done extraordinarily well in their franchise games, the passing of Iona, the Couslands, Duncan, the Warden (Final Sacrfice), Mordin Solus, and Legion all truly resonated long after those poignant moments occurred.

Telltale's The Walking Dead has this all over, especially the very last character to die in season 1.

i was surprised when Duncan was killed, i kind of liked the old man. i was way more sad, pissed and depressed when Legion died ("no, really, you don't have to! can't we just upload some code or whatever? pretty please? i can airlock tali if you want! just come with me"). never cared much for Mordin tho.

Sticking with Bioware games because I don't want to go through a mental list of every piece I've consumed, I honestly think the only death that really made me feel that way was Mordin, especially when he started singing about being a scientist salarian  :crying:

Other than that?  Nothing that really shocked me.

In a Bioware game

Mordin - dieing saving the Krogan singing his patter song, so sad

Miranda - every playthrough since I've made sure to keep her alive.

Legion - does this unit have a soul *cry*

Duncan - I was so sure that he was going to be an advisor throughout the game.

Leandra - this shocked me, I was so sure Hawke was going to be able to save her mother.

Not a death but

Bodahn & Sandal announcing that they would be leaving Hawke all alone, particularly a Hawke who has no siblings

Non Bioware game

Lost Odyssey - this whole game was so emotional

In my first playthrough of DA:O Alistair robbed me of the my last sacrifice. That floored me.

Rohan's death at the end of an old book called Stronghold.

Wash's death in Serenity.

Thane's actual last moments.

The Virmire Survivor mission. I am not ashamed to admit that I replayed it several times trying to figure out how to leave Liara behind because I wanted to save both Kaidan and Ashley.

Dragon age wise Alastair first playthrough. I wanted to help my people, the dwarves and my family didn't want to use my boon as I thought I would not get another chance. He had been a friend.

Outside of DA most have been mentioned. One that had not though and touched me deeply is planescape torment just before the end. I won't spoil it but it was a time I really felt touched.

I have something of a curse. If I like a character, then they is gonna dieeeee.

Most recent example goes to inFamous Second Son. I was texting my friend during a cut scene to announce that I feared for Reggie because I liked his character. He died less than 5 minutes later. Both hilarious and devastating. Poor Reggie. Should have known better after inFamous 2.

When it comes to videogames though I think ME3 is the one that hit me the hardest. Losing Mordin and then Thane so close to each other (first run through was a Thane romance as well) was a cannonball to my emotions. Can't believe I cried. That's not what I do...

If I was to name all of them I would be here forever. It's so frequent that I now feel lost if my favourite character is still standing by the end.

Although I will mention the weirdest. Lucien Lachance in TES: Oblivion. Definitely not the guy to go looking for a happily ever after with, but hey ho. I liked him, and I was so disappointed when he died. Ah. I was going to say gutted when he died,  but realised that seems like a dreadful pun. Standing in that barn next to his corpse after just made it oh so much worse. At least they let me have him back, in a sense in Skyrim.

My entire family being wiped out as a Cousland.

In other media:
Glenn in walking dead, haven't been able to read them since.
Marley in Marley and me, sob.
Mr Whedon has continually affected me, meanie.
Oh and Thomas in My Girl. I was only young.
